Eveline: the Girl Bioweapon Behind Resident Evil 7
Eveline is the mind-controlling child bioweapon at the heart of Resident Evil 7, built by the Connections from the Mold. Here is where she came from, what she wanted, why she is also the old woman in the wheelchair, and how she returns in Village and Shadows of Rose.
Eveline is the bioweapon behind Resident Evil 7: a girl built by the Connections from the Mold, able to infect people and take over their minds. In 2014 she escaped her handlers, washed up in Louisiana and turned the Baker family into the killers Ethan Winters meets in 2017. All she wanted was a family. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Who made Eveline?#
The Connections did. Resident Evil 7's lab files describe a programme to grow human weapons that could take over the minds of enemy soldiers, so wars could be won without fighting. Each generation improved on the last, and the E-series was the furthest along. Eveline, E-001, was its first success. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Her power comes from the Mold, which the files say was worked into her from the embryo stage. Anyone she infects grows a fungal mass in the brain and becomes part of a network she can steer. Resident Evil Village fills in the other half of the story: the Mold came from Mother Miranda, who supplied the syndicate with it and helped bring Eveline into being. A photo in Miranda's lab shows her with the infant Eveline. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)
The Annabelle (2014)#
In October 2014 Eveline was being moved by sea on the tanker Annabelle. Her escorts were two Connections operatives posing as her guardians: Mia Winters, playing her mother, and Alan. Eveline already called Mia "mom". During a storm she lost control, killed Alan, flooded the ship with Mold and infected the crew and Mia. The tanker was torn apart and drifted into the bayou near Dulvey. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Mia relives that night on a videotape late in Resident Evil 7, which is how she finally remembers what she used to be. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
The Bakers (2014 to 2017)#
Jack Baker found Eveline after the storm and brought her home. The Daughters episode shows what came next, through Zoe Baker's eyes. Within hours, Marguerite was sick, Jack was violent, and the family started going under. Eveline made Jack and Marguerite her parents and Lucas her brother, and had the family drag strangers to the house to join them or die. Zoe was infected but kept her mind. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Daughters)
Lucas was a special case. The Connections gave him a serum that made him immune to her, and he pretended to obey while reporting on her to a lab hidden in a nearby salt mine. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Why is Eveline an old woman?#
This is the twist most people search for. Eveline needed regular treatment to stay stable, and once she was cut off from the Connections she began ageing at an unnatural speed. By 2017 her body was that of a frail old woman in a wheelchair, the one who sits silently at the Bakers' dinner table. The little girl Ethan keeps seeing is a hallucination, the way Eveline still saw herself. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
How does Eveline die?#
Eveline used Mia to email Ethan, hoping to add a father to her family. He came, and spent the game fighting her family. In the salt mine lab he found the files on her and, with a sample of her tissue that Mia gave him, made a toxin built to kill her. He fought through her hallucinations back to the guest house and injected the old woman. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
The toxin broke her down. She swelled into a huge mass of Mold that swallowed the house, and Ethan finished her with a powerful handgun dropped from a helicopter. Chris Redfield pulled him out. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Eveline in Village and Shadows of Rose#
Eveline died, but a trace of her stayed in the Mold inside Ethan. In Resident Evil Village, after Miranda tears out his heart, she appears to him and tells him the truth: Jack Baker killed him at the Baker house, and his body has been nothing but Mold since. Miranda, for her part, calls baby Rose a better successor to Eveline than Eveline ever was. (Resident Evil Village)
In Shadows of Rose, set years later inside the consciousness held in a surviving piece of the Mold, a remnant of Eveline torments Rose Winters in a nightmare version of House Beneviento, before Rose gets past her. The government agents guarding Rose also mock her by calling her "Eveline", a name she doesn't even recognise at first. (Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)
What kind of creature is Eveline?#
She isn't a zombie or a virus mutant. Eveline is a genetically engineered human weapon whose body carries the Mold, closer to a living control unit than a monster. The creatures around her, the Molded, are fungus shaped by her will, and the Bakers are ordinary people she broke. Her final form, the towering Mold mass, only appears once the toxin tears her apart. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
For every Mold creature in the series, see the monster guide. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard; Resident Evil Village)
Frequently asked questions
- Who is Eveline in Resident Evil 7?
- Eveline is a bioweapon in the form of a young girl, codenamed E-001 and created by the Connections using the Mold. She infects people, controls their minds and forces them to act as her family, which is what happened to the Bakers.
- Is Eveline the old woman in Resident Evil 7?
- Yes. The silent old woman in the wheelchair is Eveline's real body. She aged far faster than a normal person once she went without the drugs that kept her stable, and the little girl is how she still saw herself.
- What does Eveline want?
- A family. She was built to be loved and obeyed, and that need became the driving force of the whole Baker outbreak. She calls Mia her mother and wants Ethan as her father.
- Is Eveline related to Mother Miranda?
- In a sense. Resident Evil Village reveals that Miranda helped the Connections create her, supplying the Mold. Miranda later calls Rose Winters a better successor to Eveline than Eveline ever was.
- Is Eveline in Resident Evil Village?
- Only as a vision. After Miranda tears out Ethan's heart, Eveline appears to him and tells him he has been dead since the Baker house. A remnant of her also torments Rose in Shadows of Rose.
