Resident Evil Village Story Explained: Plot, Ending and Shadows of Rose
The full story of Resident Evil Village, from Chris Redfield's attack on the Winters home to Ethan's last stand against Mother Miranda, with the ending, the post-credits scene and the Shadows of Rose DLC explained.
Resident Evil Village came out in May 2021 and finishes the story Resident Evil 7 began. It's set in February 2021, three and a half years after the Baker house, in a snowbound village somewhere in Eastern Europe. Ethan Winters goes looking for his kidnapped baby daughter and finds a cult, four monstrous lords and the origin of the fungus that infected him. The Shadows of Rose DLC, released in October 2022, then follows his daughter sixteen years on. This page covers the whole plot of both, so it has full spoilers. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil Village, Shadows of Rose)
Before the story begins#
After Louisiana, the BSAA's Chris Redfield moved Ethan and Mia to Europe under new identities. Ethan took military training, the couple tried to put the Baker house behind them, and they had a daughter, Rosemary. (Resident Evil Village)
What Ethan didn't know mattered more. Eveline, the bioweapon from Resident Evil 7, had been built by the Connections using the Mold, and the Mold came from somewhere real: a huge fungal mass under a remote village, worshipped by its people and controlled by a woman they called Mother Miranda. Miranda wanted Rose. (Resident Evil Village)
The village and the four lords#
One night Mia read Rose a local folk tale, the Village of Shadows. Over dinner, gunfire tore through the window. Chris and his men killed Mia in front of Ethan, Chris finishing her himself, and took Ethan and Rose. Ethan woke in a crashed convoy in the snow with Rose gone, and followed a trail to a village. (Resident Evil Village)
It had been gutted by wolf-like creatures, Lycans. A handful of survivors hid in Luiza's house, until one of them, Leonardo, turned into a Lycan and killed them. A cackling old woman told Ethan that Mother Miranda had taken his child. Ethan was then captured by a man with power over metal, Karl Heisenberg, and dragged before Miranda and her four lords: the giant vampire countess Lady Dimitrescu; Donna Beneviento, a silent dollmaker; Salvatore Moreau, a mutated fish-like creature; and Heisenberg himself. Mother Miranda handed Ethan to Heisenberg, who turned him loose in a Lycan-infested arena as a game. Ethan escaped, met a merchant called the Duke, and headed for the castle. (Resident Evil Village)
Castle Dimitrescu#
Inside, Lady Dimitrescu's three daughters, Bela, Cassandra and Daniela, caught him and hung him up. He tore his hand free and spent the next hours hunted through the castle, its wine cellars full of the drained bodies of village men. The daughters were swarms of insects in human form and could not survive the cold, so Ethan let in the winter air and killed each in turn. Lady Dimitrescu cut off his hand in the dungeon; he reattached it. (Resident Evil Village)
With a poisoned dagger, the Dagger of Death's Flowers, he wounded her, and she mutated into a winged monster. He killed her on the castle roof and took a glass flask from her remains. At the village altar the Duke told him what it held: Rose's head. Miranda's lords had split her into four flasks, and as long as all four were recovered, Rose could still be saved. Ethan noticed that the crest of the four houses looked very like the Umbrella Corporation logo. (Resident Evil Village)
Beneviento, Moreau and Urias#
At House Beneviento, Ethan's weapons vanished, and he spent the visit in a nightmare built from Donna's hallucinogenic pollen. He played hide and seek with her doll Angie, stabbing the doll each time he found it, and when the hallucination cleared he had killed Donna herself. (Resident Evil Village)
At Moreau's reservoir he took the third flask from the miserable, Miranda-worshipping Moreau, who turned into a huge fish creature in the water. Ethan drained the reservoir and killed him. Along the way he met Chris and one of his squad at a research tent. Chris refused to explain anything, and Ethan, still believing Chris had murdered Mia, wanted nothing from him. In the stronghold Ethan killed Urias, the giant he had fought before, and took the last flask. (Resident Evil Village)
Heisenberg's factory and the truth about Mia#
Heisenberg let Ethan in and offered a deal: together they could use Rose as a weapon to kill Miranda, whom Heisenberg hated for experimenting on him as a child. Ethan refused, so Heisenberg dropped him into his factory, full of his half-machine Soldat creatures. (Resident Evil Village)
In a vent Ethan ran into Chris, who was planting explosives in the factory. This time Chris told him the truth. The Mia he had shot at the house was Miranda, who could change her shape and had been living in Mia's place. Chris had been trying to stop her taking Rose. He gave Ethan a makeshift tank, and Ethan killed the gigantic mechanical form Heisenberg built for their fight. (Resident Evil Village)
Then the old woman appeared and changed into Mia, then into Miranda. She had been the hag all along. She told Ethan that Rose was a better successor to Eveline than Eveline had ever been, and that through the Mold Rose would become her dead daughter Eva. Then she pushed her hand into Ethan's chest and tore out his heart. (Resident Evil Village)
Chris and Miranda's lab#
The story switches to Chris. The Hound Wolf Squad attacked the village to avenge Ethan, while a separate BSAA force arrived without explanation. Chris went underground, killed a second Urias, the Urias Strajer, with help from his team, and planted a bomb on the Megamycete, the giant fungal root, but held off setting it until Miranda was dead. (Resident Evil Village)
In Miranda's lab he learned her past. She had been a scientist whose daughter Eva died in the Spanish flu of 1919. In grief she found the Megamycete in the caves, which absorbs the memories of anything it consumes, and spent a hundred years trying to use it to bring Eva back. The four lords were failed hosts. The villagers who reacted badly to her Cadou parasite became Lycans and other creatures. She had given her Mold and research to the Connections to make Eveline. A letter in the lab shows that a young Oswell E. Spencer had learned from her, and that when he founded Umbrella he took the idea from a symbol in the cave the two of them had talked about. Chris also found the real Mia alive in a cell. She told him Ethan was not gone yet. (Resident Evil Village)
Ethan's last stand#
Ethan woke in a white void where Eveline told him the truth: he had died in Louisiana when Jack Baker killed him, and the Mold had been rebuilding him ever since. He came round in the Duke's carriage and went to Miranda's ceremony. As Rose was reborn, Miranda saw it was Rose and not Eva emerging. She absorbed the child and fought Ethan in a series of monstrous forms. He killed her. She crumbled to stone calling for her daughter, and Rose came free. (Resident Evil Village)
The ending explained#
With Miranda dead, the Mold keeping Ethan alive began to die too. Chris led him and Rose towards safety as the Megamycete rose up and chased them. Ethan knew he wasn't leaving. He told Chris to keep Rose safe and teach her to be strong, gave him a message for Mia, took the detonator and set off the bomb. Chris escaped with Rose to Mia, who held her daughter and mourned. Chris learned that the BSAA soldiers fighting in the village were bioweapons dressed as troops, and ordered his team to fly to BSAA Europe headquarters, promising someone would pay. (Resident Evil Village)
During the credits, an illustrated version of the Village of Shadows ends: the girl's father dies saving her from the witch. After the credits, years later, a grown Rose visits Ethan's grave. A government agent collects her and jokes about calling her Eveline, and she grabs him, warning she has powers even Chris doesn't know about. As they drive away, a shadowy figure watches. The closing line says the father's story is done. (Resident Evil Village)
The ending closes Ethan's story but opens Rose's, and it leaves two threads: the BSAA's use of bioweapons, and who wants Rose now. Neither has been picked up by a later main game. (Resident Evil Village)
Shadows of Rose#
In 2037 a teenage Rose, bullied all her life for her powers, was offered a way to get rid of them: a crystal said to lie inside the Megamycete's archived consciousness. She bonded with a recovered fragment of the Mold and woke in a dreamlike version of Castle Dimitrescu, ruled by a masked version of the Duke and hunted by faceless Mold creatures. Golden writing on the walls guided her, signed by a protector who called himself Michael. (Resident Evil Village, Shadows of Rose)
At House Beneviento, the remnant of Eveline tormented her, and in a copy of the Winters' old home Rose felt for the first time that she knew her father. She worked out that Michael was Ethan's consciousness, preserved by the Mold. Behind everything was an archived copy of Miranda, still trying to bring back Eva through Rose's body. Rose reached the crystal and drained her powers, but when Miranda attacked Ethan she took them back to save him and destroyed Miranda. She shared a last moment with her father before the world dissolved, then woke choosing to keep her abilities. (Resident Evil Village, Shadows of Rose)
What it sets up#
Village and Shadows of Rose end the Winters saga. The series' next main game, Resident Evil Requiem, goes back to Raccoon City and Leon S. Kennedy instead. For the story that started Ethan's nightmare, see the Resident Evil 7 story, and for how Miranda's Mold connects to Umbrella's founding, the Resident Evil timeline. (Resident Evil Village)

Frequently asked questions
- Does Ethan die at the end of Resident Evil Village?
- Yes. After killing Mother Miranda his Mold body begins to fail, and he stays behind to set off Chris's bomb on the Megamycete, handing Rose to Chris first. Shadows of Rose shows a fragment of his consciousness surviving inside the Mold, and Rose gets to say goodbye to it.
- Why did Chris kill Mia at the start of Village?
- He didn't. The Mia he shot was Mother Miranda, who had taken the real Mia prisoner and her place and was living in the Winters home. Chris was trying to stop her taking Rose. The real Mia was a prisoner in Miranda's lab, and Chris rescues her late in the game.
- Was Ethan dead the whole time?
- Since early in Resident Evil 7. Jack Baker killed him in the guest house, and Eveline's Mold rebuilt and ran his body from then on. That's why he survives wounds that should kill him and can reattach his hand.
- What does Miranda want with Rose?
- Miranda's daughter Eva died of the Spanish flu in 1919, and Miranda spent a century trying to bring her back through the Mold. Rose, the child of two Mold-infected parents, was the perfect vessel, so Miranda planned to rebirth Eva in her body.
- Who is the old lady in Resident Evil Village?
- Mother Miranda in disguise. The old woman who keeps cackling about Rose around the village is one of her shapeshifted forms, which she reveals after the fight with Heisenberg.
- What happens in Shadows of Rose?
- In 2037 a teenage Rose enters the consciousness of the Megamycete to find a crystal that could rid her of her powers. Guided by a voice called Michael, who turns out to be her father's preserved consciousness, she defeats an archived copy of Miranda, keeps her powers and says goodbye to Ethan.
