Mia Winters: Ethan's Wife and Her Secret Past With the Connections
Mia Winters is the missing wife Ethan goes looking for in Resident Evil 7, and a former operative of the bioweapons syndicate that made Eveline. Here is what she was hiding, what happens to her in each ending, and her role in Resident Evil Village.
Mia Winters is Ethan Winters' wife, the woman he goes looking for in Resident Evil 7 and the mother of Rose Winters. She's also the series' best-kept domestic secret: before she vanished in 2014, Mia worked for the Connections, the syndicate that built the bioweapon Eveline. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Who is Mia Winters?#
To Ethan, Mia was an ordinary wife who vanished. Before she left in 2014, she told him she was going away on a babysitting job, and sent him a cheerful video message from the trip. Then she was gone for three years and presumed dead. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
The truth was the job. Mia worked for the Connections, and the child she was "babysitting" was Eveline, a bioweapon built from the Mold. She and a partner, Alan, were escorting her by sea on the tanker Annabelle, with Mia posing as her mother. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
The Annabelle and the Bakers (2014 to 2017)#
During a storm in 2014 Eveline lost control. She killed Alan, infected the crew and infected Mia too. The ship broke up and washed into the bayou near Dulvey, and Jack Baker took in both survivors. Within days Eveline had the family under her control. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Mia spent the next three years with the Bakers, her memory of what she'd done gone. The Mold made her part of Eveline's "family", and Eveline wanted her as a mother. Eventually Mia was locked in a cell under the guest house. In July 2017 Ethan received an email from her telling him where she was. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Why did Mia attack Ethan?#
Ethan found her in the guest house cell, frightened and desperate to leave. As they searched for a way out, Eveline's control took hold. Mia attacked him, came back with a chainsaw and cut off his left hand. She wasn't herself, and later a tape she recorded for him tried to explain that. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Mia or Zoe: the two endings#
Late in the game Ethan has one dose of serum and two infected women to save: Mia or Zoe Baker. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
- If he cures Mia, the two set off together and are thrown from their boat near the wreck of the Annabelle. On the ship Mia relives the night of the wreck on a videotape and remembers everything. She gives Ethan a sample of Eveline's tissue, holds off Eveline's control long enough to shut him safely away from her, and is waiting for him in the rescue helicopter at the end. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
- If he chooses Zoe, Mia is crushed by his choice. On the ship she still gives him the sample, but she can't fight Eveline off and attacks him, and he has to kill her. (Resident Evil 7: Biohazard)
Resident Evil Village follows the first ending. (Resident Evil Village)
Life in Europe#
After Louisiana the BSAA questioned the Winters, removed their Mold growths and moved them to Europe under protection. Their daughter Rose was born there. Mia's past with the Connections was kept from Ethan. (Resident Evil Village)
Mia in Resident Evil Village (2021)#
Village opens with Mia reading baby Rose a folk tale, then Chris Redfield's team storms the house and shoots her dead in front of Ethan. It wasn't Mia. Mother Miranda had taken her and copied her, and was living in her place so she could get to Rose. (Resident Evil Village)
The real Mia was a prisoner in Miranda's lab under the village. Chris found her alive in a cell, and she told him Ethan wasn't gone yet. At the end, after Ethan killed Miranda and gave up his life to destroy the Megamycete, Chris brought Rose back to Mia. (Resident Evil Village)
What happens to Mia after Village?#
Very little is shown. The post-credits scene jumps years ahead to a grown Rose at her father's grave, and Shadows of Rose finds Rose growing up under government guard with Mia largely absent. Inside the Mold's memories, mannequins shaped like Mia hunt Rose, but the real Mia's whereabouts in 2037 are never explained. (Resident Evil Village; Resident Evil Village: Shadows of Rose)
