Steve Burnside: Claire's Partner and Tragedy in Code: Veronica
Steve Burnside is the teenage prisoner Claire Redfield teams up with on Rockfort Island in Resident Evil Code: Veronica. He is cocky, angry and fiercely loyal to her, and his death in Antarctica is one of the saddest scenes in the series. Here is his whole story.
Steve Burnside is the teenage prisoner who becomes Claire Redfield's partner in Resident Evil Code: Veronica. He was locked up on Umbrella's Rockfort Island because of his father, survives the outbreak there with Claire, and dies in Antarctica after Alexia Ashford turns him into a monster. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Who is Steve Burnside?#
Steve is a prisoner on Rockfort Island, a remote Umbrella prison and training base, when Claire is brought there after being caught raiding Umbrella's Paris lab. He isn't a criminal. His father worked for Umbrella and was caught selling the company's secrets, so father and son were locked up together, and his mother was killed. Steve blames his father for all of it. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
When the island came under attack and the t-Virus got out, Steve escaped his cell and started looking for a way off. He meets Claire by opening fire on her from a machine gun post, thinking she's a zombie, then comes down to apologise. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
He is a teenager and acts like one. He brags, sulks, calls himself her knight in shining armour, and insists he works better alone. He tells Claire nobody is coming to help her, because in his experience you end up disappointed if you rely on anyone else. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Steve and Claire on Rockfort Island#
Steve keeps leaving Claire and keeps coming back. He finds files about Chris Redfield on a computer and tells Claire that Umbrella has been watching her brother; she uses the terminal to email Leon for help. He grabs a pair of gold Lugers from a display in the Ashford residence, sets off a trap, and needs Claire to get him out. Later he crashes through a window to shoot a monster that has her pinned, and trades his Lugers for her submachine guns. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
The hardest moment comes when the two fall through a walkway. Steve finds his father, now a zombie. He freezes and can't fire, until the zombie goes for Claire, and then he empties his guns into him. Afterwards he tells Claire how he and his father ended up on the island. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Steve also helps Claire against the island's commander, Alfred Ashford, who has been posing as his own twin sister. When Alfred sets the base to self-destruct, Steve and Claire escape in a cargo plane with Steve at the controls, until Alfred takes over the autopilot and sends them to Antarctica. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Antarctica and Steve's death#
The plane crash-lands at Umbrella's Antarctic base. When Alfred catches them at gunpoint, Steve shoots him and Alfred falls from a ledge. Outside, the monster Alexander Ashford nearly throws Steve off the roof, and Claire pulls him up. Steve swears that next time he'll protect her. The two escape on a snow vehicle, but the dying Alfred has woken Alexia from fifteen years of cryogenic sleep, and her tentacles overturn it and drag them back. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Alexia injects Steve with t-Veronica, the virus she created. When Chris finds and frees Claire, Steve has become a huge creature carrying an axe, and he goes after Claire. He corners her, raises the axe, and stops. Instead he cuts through the tentacle holding her, and Alexia's tentacles impale him. As he dies he turns back into himself. He tells Claire he's glad he met her and that he loves her, and then he dies in her arms. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
What happened to Steve's body?#
As the base counts down to self-destruct, Albert Wesker's men take Steve's body for their own research, and Wesker taunts the Redfields with it. That's the last the games show of Steve. What Wesker did with the body, and the t-Veronica inside it, has never been answered in a numbered game. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica)
Code: Veronica X and The Darkside Chronicles#
Steve's story is the same in Code: Veronica X (2001), the expanded release, whose new scenes are mostly about Wesker. The light-gun game Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles (2009) retells Code: Veronica with Steve and Claire as the playable pair for much of it, and keeps his death. (Resident Evil Code: Veronica X; Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles)

Capcom has announced Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Code: Veronica, due in 2027. As of October 2026 it hasn't confirmed Steve's role, so how the remake handles him is still unknown. See Resident Evil Veronica for what has been confirmed. (Resident Evil Veronica official site)
