Why Did Kerrigan Kill Warfield?

Kerrigan killed General Warfield on Char because he stood between her and the Swarm she needed for her revenge on Mengsk, and because he threw Raynor's name in her face. Then she let his wounded go. Here is what Heart of the Swarm shows in the cinematic Conscience, and what it means.

By Joe Garratt

Sarah Kerrigan killed Horace Warfield because he was the last thing standing between her and the Swarm on Char, and because, wounded and cornered, he asked her what Raynor would think if he could see her. She drove the steel beam already lodged in his body straight through him. Then she pulled her zerg back and let his shuttles of wounded soldiers escape. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

Why they met on Char#

The two had history. In the last chapter of Wings of Liberty, Warfield led the Dominion's assault on Char alongside Raynor's Raiders, the attack that ended with the xel'naga artifact turning Kerrigan back into a human. Raynor saved Warfield's life on the planet's surface. (StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty)

Heart of the Swarm opens with Kerrigan in a lab on Umoja. When the Dominion attacks, she and Raynor are separated, and she sees a UNN report that Raynor has been captured and summarily executed. Arcturus Mengsk announces that the zerg are leaderless and that soon they will wipe out every last zerg on Char. Kerrigan says one word, "Mengsk", and sets course for zerg space. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

To beat Mengsk she needs an army, and the biggest piece of the old Swarm is on Char, fighting a running battle with Warfield's forces under the broodmother Zagara. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

The battle#

Kerrigan first brings Zagara to heel, then turns on the Dominion. Warfield doesn't back down. Over the radio he tells her to bring everything she has, her whole Swarm, so he won't have to hunt down stragglers. When she reaches his fortress in Old Soldiers, he starts using nuclear weapons on her hive clusters. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

He takes it personally, too. As her forces approach his fortress, he asks how she could come back to this after they saved her. Kerrigan, for her part, warns him to leave Char or she'll slaughter his men to the last. When his command centre falls, she tells her broods to hunt everyone down but to leave Warfield to her. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

The cinematic: Conscience#

Warfield is alone in the ruins with a metal beam through his body, ordering his lieutenant to get the wounded onto shuttles and refusing a rescue for himself. Kerrigan steps out from behind a zergling. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

He tells her he has three shuttles packed with men too badly hurt ever to threaten her, husbands and fathers, and orders her to let them go. When she says nothing, he turns on her: she isn't even human any more, she betrayed everyone for petty revenge, and how many innocents have died for it? Then he asks what would happen if Raynor could see her right now. Kerrigan's eyes flare and she pushes the beam through him with her mind. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

A moment later his officer radios that the zerg have pulled back, that it's a miracle and they're going to make it, and gets no answer from the general. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

Why she killed him but spared his men#

The game shows the what but leaves the why to the scene. Here's the reading the cinematic supports.

He was the enemy commander. Interpretation: Warfield had just tried to wipe out her Swarm with nukes and promised to finish it. In her war against Mengsk he was a target, not a bystander. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

He hit the one nerve she had left. Interpretation: Kerrigan thought Raynor was dead, killed by the Dominion Warfield served. His question struck right at her grief and her guilt, and it's the line that sets her off. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

She wasn't a monster yet. Interpretation: the cinematic is called Conscience for a reason. She does what Warfield asked with his last breath and lets the wounded leave. His words got through, even as she killed him for saying them. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

Afterwards Kerrigan sums it up to Zagara as a lesson in leadership: she beat Warfield not through numbers or strength, but because she had vision and he didn't. (StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm)

Frequently asked questions

What mission does Warfield die in?
Old Soldiers, the third Char mission in Heart of the Swarm. His death happens in the cinematic that follows it, called Conscience.
Did Kerrigan let Warfield's men escape?
Yes. Warfield begs her to let three shuttles of badly wounded soldiers leave. After she kills him, the zerg pull back and his officer reports that they are going to make it.
Why did Warfield mention Raynor?
Because Warfield had fought beside Raynor on Char and knew what Kerrigan meant to him. He asks what Raynor would think if he could see her now. At that point Kerrigan believed Raynor had just been executed by the Dominion.
Does Kerrigan kill Warfield in human or zerg form?
Either, depending on mission order. If Char is played before Zerus she is still in her human form. If it comes after, she is the Primal Queen of Blades.
