By Joe Garratt

Prometheus was one of the original twelve Jupiter-class battlestars laid down to counter the newly founded Cylon threat. During her career she participated in at least one joint operation with Battlestar Galactica and Battlestar Columbia.

Service history#

Prometheus was one of the first twelve Jupiter-class battlestars built to meet the emerging Cylon threat. The most detailed record of her career notes at least one joint operation conducted alongside Galactica and Columbia, placing her among the Colonial warships active in the same theater as those two ships.

Class and capabilities#

As a Jupiter-class vessel, Prometheus shared the design of Galactica, the most famous ship of the line. The class was armed with kinetic energy weapons scattered across the dorsal and ventral hull in groups of four, with two dozen batteries making the Jupiters among the heaviest hitters in the Colonial Fleet until the larger Mercury-class began to outshine them in the offensive role during the interwar period.

Twelve missile tubes carried both conventional and nuclear-tipped weapons, giving the class the ability to level entire cities. Defense came from hundreds of point-defense CIWS emplacements and two-layered armor plating effective against conventional and nuclear strikes. Large retractable flight pods supported a sizable complement of Vipers, Raptors, and shuttles, with the class's launch tubes suggesting a standard loadout of at least eighty fighters.

Like other Jupiters, Prometheus would have relied on primitive, unnetworked computers as a defense against Cylon hacking, a precaution that left such ships slower to compute faster-than-light jumps but far less vulnerable to infiltration than networked vessels.
