Battlestar Group: the Colonial Fleet's core formation

A Battlestar Group was a naval formation of the Colonial Fleet built around a battlestar and its escorting warships. Battlestars rarely transferred between groups, and the most storied groups carried a prestige comparable to that of a historic infantry unit.

A Battlestar Group, commonly abbreviated BSG, was a naval formation of the Colonial Fleet built around a single battlestar and the warships assigned to escort it. The capital ship and its escorts together defined the group. Because battlestars rarely transferred from one group to another, the most distinguished groups accumulated a long and continuous history, lending them a prestige comparable to that of a storied infantry unit.

Composition and standing#

At the heart of every Battlestar Group stood a battlestar, the battleship and carrier hybrid that anchored the formation. Around it sailed a screen of escorting warships and support craft. The Jupiter-class battlestars were among the vessels that sat at the center of these formations, and an initial order of twelve such ships, one for each of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol, was provided for under the Articles of Colonization that established both the Colonial Fleet and the united Colonies.

A defining trait of the Battlestar Group was its permanence. Battlestars seldom moved between groups, so a group's identity stayed bound to one capital ship across years of service. The result was that the most accomplished groups built reputations of their own, carrying a historical prestige that rivaled that of a renowned infantry unit.

Escorts and organization#

A Battlestar Group drew its strength not only from its battlestar but from the lighter warships attached to it. Fleet escorts, heavy cruisers, and similar craft were assigned to support the capital ship in battle and on extended operations. Battlestar Group 75, frequently rendered as BSG-75, counted numerous such vessels among its order of battle and was committed repeatedly to both relief efforts and front line offensives.

Battlestar Groups could in turn fall under larger commands. The battlestar Triton served in the Colonial Fleet following the war against the Cylons and was assigned to Battlestar Group 39, which formed part of the Aerilon Combat 5th Division. In this way individual groups were woven into the broader divisional structure of the Colonial military.

Service against the Cylons#

Battlestar Groups bore much of the weight of the long conflict against the Cylons. During Operation Clean Sweep, an offensive of that war, the battlestar Archeron and its accompanying group came under heavy assault from Cylon forces, and the admiralty redeployed Battlestar Group 75 to reinforce them. BSG-75 was likewise dispatched on a relief mission to Aerilon, where Cylon pumping station strikes had caused an air shortage in the colony's domed cities, only to be ambushed by a Cylon fleet that delayed the rescue and cost many civilian lives. Through such engagements the Battlestar Group proved itself the fundamental instrument by which the Colonies projected force against their machine enemies.
