Demeter-type

the Colonial Fleet escort

The Demeter-type was a class of Colonial escort vessel and a sister class to the Orion-class. Carrying battlestar-grade weaponry and an even heavier secondary battery, the Demeter-type was among the largest heavy-hitters in the Colonial support fleet despite being far smaller than a Jupiter-class battlestar.

By Joe Garratt

The Demeter-type was a type of escort vessel used by the Colonial Fleet. As a sister class to the Orion-class, it was presumably launched around the same time, generations before the First Cylon War began. Like its sister class, the Demeter-type carried battlestar-grade weaponry, and it mounted an even larger secondary battery. Although significantly smaller than a Jupiter-class battlestar, these vessels were among the largest heavy-hitters in the Colonial support fleet.

Design and role#

Built around a hull shared with the Orion-class, the Demeter-type carried battlestar-grade weapons on a comparatively small frame. Where the Orion-class was optimized for stealth and reconnaissance, the Demeter-type traded that capability for a heavier secondary battery and a more conventional hangar arrangement, making it one of the heaviest-hitting support ships in the Fleet.

Armament#

The main armament comprised twelve dual kinetic energy weapon (KEW) batteries. These were not of the same caliber as a Jupiter-class battlestar's guns, being closer to the main batteries of the Valkyrie-class, but they still posed a significant threat to small and medium Cylon vessels. The secondary armament consisted of fifty dual KEW batteries. Though these could not endanger a basestar or larger Cylon support ship, they could inflict significant damage on smaller Cylon escorts or incoming fighters.

Defenses#

The class possessed a two-layered defense, one active and one passive. The active layer consisted of thirty-two quad point-defense KEW batteries located mainly on the stern, capable of producing impressive flak screens against incoming Cylon fighters. As with its Colonial contemporaries, thick armor protected the ship from any incoming missiles its flak screen failed to destroy.

Fighter complement#

The Demeter-type could support a small complement of Viper space superiority fighters, presumably up to a squadron, as well as several Raptor multipurpose craft. Whether it could sustain these craft for long deployments or only for brief missions is unknown. The class possessed three large hangar bays, one on each side and one at the front, which compared to its sister class allowed for more comfortable departures.

Crew, systems, and propulsion#

Very little is recorded about the Demeter-type's computers. Like other ships of the First Cylon War era, its systems are presumed to have been extremely simple and non-networked, which made them more resistant to Cylon infiltration. Its sister the Orion-class required a crew of only about 150 to operate, excluding the flight complement, and a vessel built around the shared hull is presumed to have needed only marginally more. For propulsion, ships of the class had two primary and two secondary engine assemblies. Unlike the Orion-class, whose engines were carried on towers to the sides, the Demeter-type mounted its engines directly on the primary hull.

Known ships#

Recorded ships of the class include Fleet Escort Demeter 106, three unnamed Demeter-type fleet escorts assigned to Battlestar Group 75, and one unnamed Demeter-type fleet escort that took part in the Ghost Fleet.

Frequently asked questions

What was the Demeter-type?
The Demeter-type was a type of escort vessel used by the Colonial Fleet and a sister class to the Orion-class. It carried battlestar-grade weaponry and mounted an even larger secondary battery, making it among the largest heavy-hitters in the Colonial support fleet despite being far smaller than a Jupiter-class battlestar.
What was the Demeter-type's armament?
The main armament comprised twelve dual kinetic energy weapon batteries, closer in caliber to the main batteries of a Valkyrie-class than a Jupiter-class battlestar. The secondary armament consisted of fifty dual KEW batteries.
How was the Demeter-type defended?
The class possessed a two-layered defense, one active and one passive. The active layer consisted of thirty-two quad point-defense KEW batteries located mainly on the stern, while thick armor protected the ship from any incoming missiles its flak screen failed to destroy.
What fighters could the Demeter-type carry?
The Demeter-type could support a small complement of Viper space superiority fighters, presumably up to a squadron, as well as several Raptor multipurpose craft. It possessed three large hangar bays, one on each side and one at the front.
How did the Demeter-type differ from the Orion-class?
Both were built around a shared hull, but where the Orion-class was optimized for stealth and reconnaissance, the Demeter-type traded that capability for a heavier secondary battery and a more conventional hangar arrangement. The Demeter-type also mounted its engines directly on the primary hull rather than on side towers.
