Orion-class

the pocket battlestar

The Orion-class was a class of Colonial assault ships developed decades before the First Cylon War. Armed with battlestar-grade kinetic weapons on a compact hull and fitted with the most advanced stealth coating in the Colonial Navy, it earned the affectionate nickname "pocket battlestar" and served chiefly as a reconnaissance and espionage vessel.

By Joe Garratt

The Orion-class assault ship was a class of escort vessels used by the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. Developed and launched decades before the war began, the class received significant refits during its later stages. Because it carried battlestar-grade kinetic weapons on a comparatively small hull, the Orion-class earned the nickname "pocket battlestar", though it was much smaller than a true battlestar such as Galactica and could not survive an extended direct engagement with a capital ship. Instead it served mainly as a light espionage and reconnaissance vessel, carrying the most advanced stealth technology the Colonial Navy had at its disposal. All ships of the class were presumably destroyed in action or decommissioned before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, as none are recorded in defense of the Colonies during the Fall.

Role and reputation#

Though it shared the heavy gunnery of a battlestar, the Orion-class was never intended to stand in a line of battle. Its small size and powerful armament earned it the affectionate "pocket battlestar" name within the Fleet, but the class was unable to handle a sustained engagement against another capital ship. Its true value lay in reconnaissance and espionage, roles for which it was equipped with the best stealth technology then available to the Colonial Navy.

Armament#

The main armament comprised twelve dual kinetic energy weapon (KEW) batteries. These were not of the same caliber as the guns of the Jupiter-class, being closer to the main batteries of the Valkyrie-class, but they still posed a significant threat to small and medium Cylon vessels. Secondary armament consisted of forty-two dual KEW batteries. While these could not threaten a basestar or larger Cylon support ship, they could inflict significant damage on smaller Cylon escorts or incoming fighters.

Defenses#

The Orion-class possessed a three-layered defense, one active and two passive. The active layer was made up of thirty-two quad point-defense KEW batteries located mainly toward the stern, capable of throwing up impressive flak screens against incoming Cylon fighters.

Where most Colonial support vessels relied solely on armor plating for passive protection, the Orion-class added a second passive layer in the form of some of the best stealth technology in the Colonial Navy. Though imperfect, this stealth coating allowed the ship to operate for several minutes near a Cylon basestar without being detected. Smaller vessels carrying older or weaker DRADIS arrays would have had even greater difficulty spotting the relatively small and agile ship.

Fighter complement#

The class could support a small complement of Viper space superiority fighters, presumably up to a squadron, along with several Raptor multipurpose craft. Whether it could sustain these craft for long deployments or only for brief missions is unknown. Lacking flight pods of any kind, pilots had to land in a relatively small hangar set beneath the ship's engine assembly, a docking procedure that was notoriously difficult and unpopular among Colonial pilots.

Crew and systems#

The Orion-class required a crew of only about 150 to operate, excluding its flight complement. Its onboard accommodation reflected this small number: crew compartments were extremely cramped, more akin to a submarine than to the other warships serving during the war. Very little is recorded about its computers, but like other vessels of the era they are presumed to have used extremely simple, non-networked systems, which made them more resistant to Cylon infiltration. Some advanced technology was still present aboard, including holobands used as a tool for three-dimensional mission briefings.

Propulsion#

Ships of the class were driven by four main rearward-facing sublight engines mounted on pods at the stern, one each to port and starboard, supported by numerous maneuvering thrusters scattered along the ship's length.

Known ships#

The only named ship of the class on record was the Assault Ship Osiris (0913), which was destroyed over the ice planet Djerba. There, with her nuclear launch doors damaged and her Vipers heavily outnumbered, the Osiris set a collision course and rammed a Cylon basestar, the detonation of her warheads destroying both ships.

A point of contention#

The status of the Orion-class as a support ship rather than a true battlestar has been a matter of debate among Colonial chroniclers, owing to its battlestar-grade weaponry and its "pocket battlestar" reputation. The prevailing view holds it to be a support vessel, since it shares no common design elements with past, contemporary, or later battlestar designs.

Frequently asked questions

What was the Orion-class?
The Orion-class was a class of Colonial assault ships, or escort vessels, used by the Colonial Fleet during the First Cylon War. It was developed and launched decades before the war began and received significant refits during its later stages.
Why was the Orion-class called the "pocket battlestar"?
The Orion-class earned the nickname "pocket battlestar" because it carried battlestar-grade kinetic weapons on a comparatively small hull. Despite this, it was much smaller than a true battlestar like Galactica and could not survive an extended direct engagement with a capital ship.
What was the Orion-class used for?
The Orion-class served mainly as a light espionage and reconnaissance vessel rather than a line warship. It carried the most advanced stealth technology the Colonial Navy had at its disposal, a stealth coating that allowed it to operate for several minutes near a Cylon basestar without being detected.
How large was the Orion-class crew and fighter complement?
The Orion-class required a crew of only about 150 to operate, excluding its flight complement, and its crew compartments were extremely cramped, more akin to a submarine than to other warships of the war. It could support a small complement of Viper fighters, presumably up to a squadron, along with several Raptors, which landed in a hangar beneath the ship's engine assembly through a notoriously difficult docking procedure.
What happened to the Orion-class ships?
All ships of the class were presumably destroyed in action or decommissioned before the Fall of the Twelve Colonies, as none are recorded in defense of the Colonies during the Fall. The only named ship of the class on record, the Assault Ship Osiris (0913), was destroyed over the ice planet Djerba when it rammed a Cylon basestar.
