Cannon was designed for dual purposes. In its turret mode it stood as a fixed emplacement at a height convenient for MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. and other small species, and at the flip of a switch it detached so that a larger, stronger being could wield it as a heavy two-handed blaster. The weapon fired when the user gripped one of its two touch-sensitive handles, which discharged the plasma it had built up.

Power came from an oblong battery mounted on one side, feeding into a network of energy-conducting tubes within the cannon. That energy heated the plasma held in a tank, which was channeled toward the barrel and stopped there by a force field. When enough plasma had accumulated, the field dropped and the pressurized plasma was launched forward at high velocity. The cannon mounted an unusual laser sight on the side, attached to the plasma tank: instead of marking where the plasma would travel, the laser led it, the plasma detecting the laser's exact wavelength and following its course to the target. The weapon needed light to work at its best, though it remained usable in darkness.
