Hordika Venom

The Visorak Toxin That Mutated the Toa Metru

The toxin used by the Visorak to mutate captured prey into Hordika, the feral half-Rahi state that transformed the Toa Metru into the Toa Hordika in the webs above Metru Nui.

Composition and delivery#

Hordika Venom was a toxin produced biologically by the VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city., the spider-like creatures bred for conquest by Makuta ChiroxChiroxA Makuta of the Brotherhood who questioned Teridax's plans before being sent to Karda Nui. and deployed across the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control. under the command of the warlord SidorakSidorakHe took credit for someone else's idea, called it leadership, and spent his whole reign as the Visorak's king certain he could not be out-played. and his viceroy RoodakaRoodakaShe spent the entire Visorak arc letting everyone think they were using her, then walked away having beaten the Brotherhood and the Toa at their own game.. The standard delivery vehicle was the web cocoon. VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. hunters wrapped captured prey in webbing strands and suspended the resulting cocoons from the high webs that the horde strung across whatever territory it had occupied. The interior surfaces of the cocoons were lined with small barbs, and the barbs delivered the venom into the victim's body over the course of the captivity.

The delivery method was indirect by design. The VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. did not require continuous attention to a cocooned victim once the wrapping was complete, and a cocoon could be left in place for hours or days while the venom progressed through its effect. The barbs operated passively, releasing the toxin into the captive in the time the cocoon held, and the VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. could attend to other prey or to other operational tasks while the venom did its work.

Two outcomes#

The venom produced one of two outcomes in a given victim. The first outcome was an endless sleep, an extended unconsciousness from which the victim did not naturally wake. The sleep response appeared to be the default outcome for the majority of cocooned prey and accounted for the typical fate of the RahiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. populations that the VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. processed through their webs in occupied territory.

The second outcome was the Hordika mutation. The venom transformed the victim's body into a hybrid form that combined elements of the original physiology with features of a beast: clawed limbs, altered armour, in some cases a partial tail, and a generally monstrous appearance that the recorded sources described in plain terms. The mutation also altered the victim's disposition. A transformed Hordika became feral and vicious in mind, with the original personality partially submerged beneath an instinctive predator's profile. The hybrid was capable of speech and reason in the early stages, but the longer the venom remained uncountered, the more the bestial side dominated, and the original sentient mind progressively gave way to the RahiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. one.

The dual-outcome design was not random. It reflected the VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. purpose for the toxin. The endless-sleep response disposed of prey efficiently; the Hordika mutation produced potential new servants for the horde or potential test subjects for the experiments RoodakaRoodakaShe spent the entire Visorak arc letting everyone think they were using her, then walked away having beaten the Brotherhood and the Toa at their own game. conducted on the side. The toxin therefore handled both the consumption side and the experimental side of the VisorakThe Visorak HordeThe Brotherhood of Makuta's spider-Rahi army under King Sidorak and Viceroy Roodaka, summoned to Metru Nui after the Great Cataclysm to free Teridax and pacify whatever survived in the abandoned city. operational requirement through the same biological mechanism.

The temper rule#

A specific operational rule attached to Hordika Venom in the form it took within ToaWho are the Toa Mata?Six warriors built to order by Artakha, stored in canisters, dropped into the ocean. The victim had to keep his or her temper in check during the period of the infection. If the victim failed to do so, the transformation accelerated. Each lapse of control pushed the affected being further toward the RahiRahiThe Rahi were the biomechanical wildlife of the Matoran Universe, built largely by the Brotherhood of Makuta, ranging from background fauna to engineered war beasts. end of the spectrum, until eventually the victim was reduced to being unable to speak and being little more than a vicious, snarling beast.

The rule operated as a permanent pressure on the affected being's behaviour and made the search for a cure a matter of timing as well as of strategic priority: the longer the search took, the less of the original ToaWho are the Toa Mata?Six warriors built to order by Artakha, stored in canisters, dropped into the ocean. Frequently asked questions

What is Hordika Venom?
Hordika Venom was a toxin produced biologically by the Visorak and used to incapacitate or mutate prey. It was usually injected through small barbs lined inside the web cocoons in which captured targets were suspended.
What did Hordika Venom do to its victims?
The venom produced one of two outcomes depending on the recipient: an endless sleep from which the victim did not naturally wake, or a mutation into a Hordika, a feral half-Rahi form. The endless-sleep response was the default outcome for the majority of cocooned prey.
Why did the Toa Hordika have to keep their tempers in check?
For sentient victims, anger accelerated the transformation. Each lapse of control pushed the affected being further toward the Rahi end of the spectrum, until the victim was eventually unable to speak and reduced to little more than a vicious, snarling beast.
How were the Toa Metru turned into the Toa Hordika?
On their return to Metru Nui, the Toa Metru found the city overrun by the Visorak, who captured and cocooned the six Toa. The barbs inside the cocoons delivered the venom over the course of the captivity, and the team emerged as the Toa Hordika, six monstrous half-Rahi forms.
Was there a cure for Hordika Venom?
The only known being in the Matoran Universe capable of curing Hordika Venom was Keetongu, a Rahi of legendary status whose existence was disputed. The cure he provided returned the Toa Hordika to their Toa Metru form, though Keetongu's rarity meant the solution was not generally available to other victims.
