Prospectors in the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control. weren't fancy. They went underground, they examined rock and ore, they sorted what came out of the earth into useful categories. It's the kind of job that sounds dull from above but mattered absolutely in the mining settlements, especially in Onu-Mata where the whole economy hinged on what you could pull from stone. If you wanted to know whether you had a batch of raw ore, pure protodermis, or something else entirely, a prospector was who you asked.

The Work of a Prospector#

Prospectors handled the technical end of mining operations. After ore was extracted from the ground, a prospector's job was to examine it, test it, and determine what you actually had. Raw ore? ProtodermisProtodermisThe engineered substance building the Matoran Universe, protodermis exists in countless refined states from mundane metal to diamond-hard crystal to the destruction-or-transformation force of energized form.? Some other mineral with its own value? The prospector knew. In a settlement where resources meant survival and trade, this was skilled work, not unskilled labor.

The role was specific to the Matoran UniverseMatoran UniverseA civilization of biomechanical beings living inside a colossal robot, destroyed when Teridax seized control.'s underground communities. In Onu-Mata especially, where darkness and stone were the default, prospectors were indispensable. They worked in the mines or in surface workshops, sorting the constant flow of material that came up from below. Get the classification wrong and you've wasted effort, lost trade partners, or misjudged your own supplies. A good prospector prevented that.

Known Prospectors#

Mamoru served as chief prospector in Onu-Mata, a position that granted him authority over the classification and sorting operations of the settlement. The Final Chronicle names him explicitly in this role, making him one of the few prospectors documented by name in the official canon. Whether other prospectors worked under him or whether he handled the work solo isn't clarified in the sources.
