Sand Bats are ambush predators of Bara MagnaBara MagnaA desert world of tribal warfare and scarce resources, one of three landmasses that formed Spherus Magna.'s deserts, built to hunt from beneath the sand. With a snakelike body topped by bat wings, they're surprisingly large at 15 feet long. They explode from the dunes to snatch prey and drag it underground before victims can react. Sand Bats fear the desert sun more than any creature. Prolonged sun exposure risks incineration.

Anatomy and Hunting#

The Sand Bat's design is perfectly suited to desert predation. Its snakelike body allows it to move through sand with minimal resistance, while the bat wings provide speed and maneuverability when attacking. They're large enough to be serious threats to armed warriors. In "The CrossingThe CrossingThe Bara Magna serial in which Strakk, Gresh, Kirbold, and Tarduk carried an exsidian shipment from Iconox to Vulcanus along the dangerous northern route and uncovered the first Skrall and Vorox confrontations of the empire era.," GreshGreshA young Glatorian of the Jungle Tribe who served Tesara and later joined the alliance that defended Bara Magna during its final crisis. encounters one that launches from a tunnel with startling ferocity. The creature doesn't just bite. It drags prey into the depths of sand or caves, leaving victims with almost no chance of escape.

The Sunlight Weakness#

Despite their reputation as apex desert predators, Sand Bats have a critical flaw. They can't stay in sunlight for long without risking incineration. This vulnerability limits their hunting hours and keeps them bound to shadows of canyons, caves, and underground tunnels. It's a genuine constraint on their predatory range, something wise travelers can use to their advantage.
