Solis Magna System: the solar system of the BIONICLE saga

The solar system in which the entire BIONICLE story unfolded, centered on the sun Solis Magna and home to the three fragments of the shattered planet Spherus Magna.

The Solis Magna System was the solar system in which the BIONICLE story took place. Its sun was called Solis Magna, and the system was located within the known Galactic UniverseGalactic Universe: The Cosmos of BionicleThe Galactic Universe was the universe in which the entire Bionicle story unfolded, holding the Solis Magna System, the planet Spherus Magna, and the long voyage of the giant robot through the stars before the final battle on Bara Magna.. Its history was defined by the cataclysm that split the planet Spherus Magna into three pieces and set them orbiting the sun, and by the long journey of the Great Spirit Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna. whose mission was to heal that fractured world.

The Shattering and the orbiting fragments#

A hundred thousand years before the present day, Spherus Magna faced a cataclysmic event called the Shattering, which divided the planet into three pieces, referred to as Bara Magna, Aqua Magna, and Bota Magna. These fragments began orbiting Solis Magna, the sun at the center of the system.

The Great Spirit Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna., who controlled a giant robot, had departed from Spherus Magna before the Shattering on a long journey observing the inhabited planets of the universe. His purpose was to witness alien societies in order to fulfill his mission to heal the fractured planet. Upon returning from that journey to complete his mission, he was struck down: TeridaxTeridaxTeridax orchestrated a thousand-year scheme that ended with him occupying the Great Spirit Robot itself before his death on Bara Magna. led the Brotherhood of MakutaThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. in a rebellion against him and released a virus that rendered Mata NuiMata Nui: Great Spirit of the Matoran UniverseBuilt by the Great Beings as a biomechanical guardian, betrayed by Teridax, and returned in a smaller form to reshape Spherus Magna. comatose after three hundred years. This caused the robot's body to shut down, and it was drawn in by Aqua Magna's gravity, crashing onto the ocean surface.

Teridax's reign and the casting out of Mata Nui#

Universe housed inside it, he sealed Mata NuiMata Nui: Great Spirit of the Matoran UniverseBuilt by the Great Beings as a biomechanical guardian, betrayed by Teridax, and returned in a smaller form to reshape Spherus Magna.'s spirit inside the Kanohi Ignika and expelled it out of the mechanical body into the Solis Magna System, where it flew onto the planet Bara Magna. During the battle, Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna. redirected a blast of gravity from TeridaxTeridaxTeridax orchestrated a thousand-year scheme that ended with him occupying the Great Spirit Robot itself before his death on Bara Magna. at Aqua Magna and Bota Magna, drawing them into the gravitational field of Bara Magna. The two celestial bodies then fell toward the planet, and Mata Nui used the last of his power to restore Spherus Magna back to life soon after the battle's conclusion, fulfilling the goal assigned to him by the Great BeingsThe Great BeingsScholar-inventors of Spherus Magna whose creations shaped the Matoran Universe and whose absence defined the conflicts that followed. so long before.

Known worlds and bodies#

The system's principal world was Spherus Magna, the planet of the Great BeingsThe Great BeingsScholar-inventors of Spherus Magna whose creations shaped the Matoran Universe and whose absence defined the conflicts that followed., which contained the original source of Energized Protodermis in its core. During the Shattering it was split into three parts, and at the saga's end it was refused once more.

Aqua Magna was a moon of Bara Magna, once the Great Sea of Spherus Magna. It was where Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna. fell asleep, and it was completely covered by water except for the island of Mata Nui and Voya Nui. It broke off from Spherus Magna at the end of the Core WarThe Core WarThe generations-long war on Spherus Magna over Energized Protodermis that produced the Shattering, the exodus of Mata Nui, and the long Glatorian peace on Bara Magna. and orbited Bara Magna until it became part of the restored planet again.

Bara Magna was a desert planet and the largest of the three pieces of Spherus Magna. It was the world onto which the Kanohi Ignika, carrying Mata Nui's spirit, was cast, and it became the stage of the final battle and the refusing of the planet. Bota Magna was a jungle planet that orbited Bara Magna, inhabited by villagers and beasts, and it too broke off at the end of the Core War before rejoining Spherus Magna.

Beyond the planets, the system also held the Red Star, revealed to be a transport hub for the MatoranMatoranThe most abundant species in the Matoran Universe, chosen by Mata Nui to inhabit and maintain his cosmic body. Universe, the Spirit Stars, and Solis Magna itself, the sun for which the whole system was named.
