After Julia Copland of the Magpies arrived at the USM Victory, Defense Secretary David Chang ordered a small ship sent to the origin vector of her vessel in the asteroid belt, hoping to locate the USG Ishimura. The USM Intrepid was dispatched with a small security team of several Marines under Captain Amise. At the same time the Oracles, having pieced together the exact coordinates of the Ishimura from Julia, reached the planet cracker ahead of the Intrepid and landed undetected. (Dead Space: Salvage)
When the Intrepid arrived at the Ishimura, it was hailed by Stefan Schneider, who led the crew to believe he held the Marker and wished to make a deal. He persuaded them to set down in Cargo Bay 4 on Level 5, though in truth he was on the ship's bridge and could see from the cameras that the bay was infested with Necromorphs. The Oracles recognized the trap at once. One intended to warn the Intrepid, but the other refused, reasoning that the deaths of the Marines would buy them the time to reach the bridge before Schneider could leave. (Dead Space: Salvage)
The trap and loss#
The USM Intrepid landed, and the troops and Captain Amise disembarked into a cargo bay that appeared deserted. As they dispersed, the Necromorphs fell upon them and slaughtered the Marines. Only Amise managed to fight his way back to the shuttle. He ordered the pilot to take off, only to find him already killed by a Slasher, which then killed the captain where he stood. With no one left to fly it, the Intrepid was left sitting in the cargo bay, and what became of it after the Ishimura was taken to Titan Station is not recorded. Magpies: the illegal salvage crews of known space
Magpie was the name given to freelance miners who worked outside the law across human space, running small crews and stolen mineral hauls in systems no licensed operator would touch. The USM Victory was an Earth Defense Force warship assigned to the EarthGov blockade of the Aegis System Shockpoint after the Second Aegis VII Incident. It hosted Defense Secretary David Chang and the Oracles during the hunt for Marker 3A, received the Magpie defector Julia Copland, and survived the crisis to see the USG Ishimura carried back to Titan Station.
USG Ishimura
The USG Ishimura was the flagship of the Concordance Extraction Corporation and the first Planet Cracker-class mining ship. After recovering Marker 3A from Aegis VII in 2508, it became the site of a catastrophic Necromorph outbreak that wiped out its crew and bound its name to the history of the Markers.
Aegis VII
Aegis VII was a remote, metal-rich planet in the Cygnus system used by the Sovereign Colonies as a secret test site for Marker 3A. Two Necromorph outbreaks scarred the world, and after Isaac Clarke returned the Marker to its pedestal in 2508 the planet broke apart entirely.
EarthGov
EarthGov was the centralized regime that replaced the Sovereign Colonies after the Secession War, ruling humanity from an Earth-centric core. Its decision to revive the Marker program and harvest the artifacts' energy spread the Necromorph threat across the colonies.
Marker 3A
Marker 3A was a Red Marker grown by the Sovereign Colonies and placed on Aegis VII for study. Two centuries later it was unearthed by the Concordance Extraction Corporation, triggering the outbreak aboard the USG Ishimura and imprinting its blueprints into Isaac Clarke's mind.
