Tleilaxu Master
ruling caste of the Bene Tleilax
Tleilaxu Masters were the elite caste of the Bene Tleilax, served by gholas and Face Dancers and immune to the Bene Gesserit Voice. The ten Masheikhs of the Ruling Council stood at the summit of their order.
Tleilaxu Masters were the elite social caste of the Bene Tleilax, served in their daily lives and political machinations by subservient constructs such as gholas and Face Dancers. Having a conditioned immunity to the Bene Gesserit Voice, a Master could halt and control a construct's behavior only through a unique command language, a keening, whining, and monotonous humming likened to the noises of angry insects, though this was rarely necessary.
Caste and command#
The Masters stood above the constructs that the Bene Tleilax bred and used, the gholas grown in axolotl tanks and the shape-shifting Face Dancers who served them. Although their immunity to the Bene Gesserit Voice protected them from outside compulsion, their authority over their own creations rested on a private command language, a keening and humming sound resembling the noise of angry insects, by which a construct's behavior could be halted. Such intervention was rarely required, since the constructs were bred to obedience.
The path to mastery#
Although the caste of constructs was regarded as little more than organic automata, the line between servant and Master was not fixed. A Face Dancer who lived enough serial lives as a ghola, after making significant contributions to Tleilaxu society, could be biologically upgraded into a new Master through a process the Tleilaxu called purification. Scytale was the most prominent example, becoming not only a Tleilaxu Master but eventually one of the ten Masheikhs of the Ruling Council.
Appearance#
Tleilaxu Masters were generally short and child-like in stature when compared to the powindah, the outsiders beyond their faith, with Ambassador Duro Nunepi an apparent exception to this phenotype. Across known Masters such as Bijaz, Nunepi, Tylwyth Waff, and Scytale, their appearance varied: they had either blond or grey hair, grey or dark eyes, pale or olive skin, and typically round cheeks. The ten Masheikhs, however, were distinguished by sharp teeth and a metallic grey skin pigment that resisted Ixian Probes and other intrusive scanners, for their knowledge and their nullentropy implants were too valuable to fall into powindah hands.
The Ruling Council#
At the summit of the order stood the Masheikhs, the highest Masters who together formed the Ruling Council. Among them were Mirlat, Torg the Younger, and Scytale, while Tylwyth Waff held the rank of Mahai. Other recorded Masters included Bijaz, Duro Nunepi, Ledden Pook, and Wose, men who carried out the political and biological work of the Bene Tleilax across the Imperium.
