Alvíss Stonefoot: the Warden of Svartalfheim
the dwarf who caged the realm's deadliest beasts

Alvíss Stonefoot was a dwarf of Svartalfheim, remembered as the warden of his realm. Intelligent and resourceful in equal measure, he used his sharp mind to trap the most dangerous creatures of the Nine Realms, and a towering statue was carved in his honor for the protection he had given his people.
The warden of Svartalfheim#
Little was recorded of Alvíss beyond his work, but Mimir, questioned by Freya, spoke of him as a very intelligent dwarf. He was the warden of Svartalfheim, and rather than relying on force he turned his mind to the task, trapping the most dangerous creatures the realm and its neighbors held. For the protection he granted Svartalfheim, his people raised a monumental statue in his honor: a great figure seated on rocky terrain, clad in a suit of armor and carved as though it held a giant hammer.
From the way Mimir spoke of him, and the scarcity of any mention otherwise, it was understood that by the events of Ragnarök Alvíss was already deceased.
The signs of the caged#
Alvíss left his record in stone. Across the realms he set carved signs at the places where he had imprisoned his most fearsome captives, each detailing the creature, the harm it had done, and his blunt instructions to leave it sleeping.
One sign marked the troll Bjarg Stormr, blamed for forty three dwarven and twenty two other deaths, sealed by Nott's Slumber in Alfheim; Alvíss noted that rehabilitation was impossible and warned against waking it. Another marked Gölráb of the Ashes and Frost in Vanaheim, and a third the troll Blóðugr Steinn in Midgard, held responsible for seventy eight dwarven and three other deaths. In his reports he named himself in turn the warden of Svartalfheim and, with weary humor, He-Who-Is-Running-Out-Of-Patience-For-Writing-These-Reports, a measure of the irritable temper that ran alongside his cleverness.
