The Applecore was a large mining region within Svartalfheim, the realm of the Dwarves, made up of a confusing maze of tunnels and passages. It served as a crossroads of the realm, linking the Jarnsmida Pitmines to the Sverd Sands and the Aurvangar Wetlands beyond. Kratos and Atreus passed through its depths during their search for the imprisoned god Tyr.
A crossroads of Svartalfheim#
The Applecore was one of the mining regions carved into Svartalfheim by the Dwarves, and its layout was famously confusing, a tangle of curved paths, crawlspaces, water troughs, and walkways that doubled back on themselves. The workshop of the dwarf Sindri sat near its entrance, reached by boat through the mines. From the Applecore a traveler could pass to the Jarnsmida Pitmines on one side and to the Sverd Sands and the Aurvangar Wetlands on the other, making it a vital link between the scattered corners of the realm.
The passage of Kratos and Atreus#
Kratos and his son Atreus made their way through the Applecore in the course of their long journey across the Nine Realms in search of Tyr. The tunnels were occupied by the dark creatures of Svartalfheim, among them Grims, Wretches, and the occasional hulking Bergsra, and the pair had to fight through them to press on. The region could not be freely traveled all at once, and they would later pass back through it from the opposite direction as their quest carried them onward.
