Nyreen Kandros was a turian biotic and the leader of the Talons mercenary organization on Omega in 2186. Unlike the group's previous leader, she possessed a strong moral compass and extensive military experience, and she used those traits to turn the Talons from a lawless gang into a disciplined force devoted to protecting Omega's civilians. She was a former lover of Aria T'Loak, and the two fought together to free the station from Cerberus occupation.
A reluctant biotic#
Nyreen Kandros was born into a family with a long and honored tradition of military service, and she entered the turian military herself. When her biotic abilities emerged she left, for the turians were often suspicious of biotics and shipped her off to the Cabal units, where her abilities and experience were badly underused. After several years working as a mercenary, she was drawn to Omega by its reputation as a haven for capable freelancers.
Her early years on the station proved formative. Aria T'Loak took an interest in her, helping her hone her biotic talents and bring her military experience to its full potential, and giving her the time she needed to reconcile herself to a life she had not chosen and abilities she had not wanted. The two developed a relationship, but eventually parted ways over irreconcilable differences. Nyreen stayed on Omega without Aria's knowledge and went on to take control of the Talons.
Reforming the Talons#
Where the group's former leader had run a lawless gang, Nyreen brought a strong moral compass and hard military discipline. Under her command the Talons became a highly organized operation devoted to aiding and protecting the civilians of Omega. Around this time she also crossed paths with her cousin Tiran Kandros, intervening to protect him and a companion from a pair of batarians on the station and aiding them against a dangerous salarian biotic. She and Tiran shared a wish to escape what they called the family curse of endless military service, and she encouraged him to seize a wider life beyond their family's legacy.
The fight for Omega#
When Cerberus seized Omega during the war against the Reapers, Nyreen led the resistance against the occupation, though at first she kept her reasons for being on the station hidden. On Aria's return to liberate Omega, the two were reunited. They remained wary of each other at first, having ended their relationship on bad terms, but the tension between them gradually eased, and Nyreen became an invaluable part of Aria's forces while trying to rein in her more violent and reckless impulses.
Her composure faltered only against the Adjutants, the Reaper creatures Cerberus had loosed on Omega. She vividly remembered being forced to kill many friends and allies after they were infected, and she became visibly shaken when facing the creatures again.
During the final assault on the Cerberus command center at the Afterlife Club, Nyreen led her Talons independently through the Gozu District. Sensing something was wrong, she scouted ahead of her troops and reached the main plaza outside Afterlife in time to see a group of Adjutants charging toward civilians. She drew the creatures in with her biotics and detonated a belt of grenades, her biotic field containing the explosion as it incinerated both the Adjutants and herself. Her death enraged Aria, who charged the remaining Cerberus troops in the battle that followed.
