Tiran Kandros was a turian who founded and led the volunteer militia that took over station security aboard the Nexus, the central station of the Andromeda Initiative in the Heleus Cluster. He also served as mission control for the APEX strike teams that secured Initiative interests across the cluster, dictating local objectives to agents in the field. Though technically a civilian, he was counted among the Nexus leadership.
A turian military family#
Kandros came from what he described as a typical turian military family within the Turian Hierarchy. He was named after an ancestor said to have captured a dreadnought during the Krogan Rebellions, and he was expected to live up to that legacy. He began military training at the traditional age of fifteen, rose through the ranks, and was assigned to a Hierarchy counter-terrorism division. His mother was Admiral Ravis Kandros, and his cousin was Nyreen Kandros.
Though many of his relatives took pride in his continuing the family tradition of military service, others among them had pursued different careers. Kandros himself wanted an adventure of his own, and he was taken with the founder Jien Garson's ambitious dream. He chose to join the Andromeda Initiative, and he later explained that he wished to write a whole new book on the Kandros legacy rather than simply add another chapter to it.
Founding the Nexus Militia#
In the early days after the Nexus reached the Heleus Cluster, Kandros left the station to act as protection for a prospecting team. The party was captured by the kett, and Kandros managed to free himself, secure a weapon, and lead the other captives in an escape. By his own account, he was the only one among those taken that day who broke himself out, armed himself, and got everyone home.
After returning to the Nexus, he found that the personnel there had begun looking to him as if he were in charge. From that the militia grew. The volunteer force took over station security, and Kandros, though a civilian, became its leader and a fixture of the Nexus leadership. He held an office near Operations in the station's security and militia area.
APEX and the defense of the cluster#
Beyond station security, Kandros directed the APEX strike teams, dispatching them to protect Initiative interests throughout the Heleus Cluster. He acted as their mission control, setting local objectives and coordinating agents in the field. He considered the teams well suited to outpost protection, holding key positions, and drawing kett attention, and he was confident they could handle themselves.
Kandros was a pragmatic and security-minded figure who weighed the survival of the Nexus above other concerns. When unrest broke out among the station's population, he favored firm measures to keep order and protect critical systems such as Hydroponics, though he ultimately deferred to the decisions of the Initiative's other leaders. He took an interest in the fate of the turian ark and was relieved when its passengers were recovered. During the climactic battle for the world the Initiative came to call Meridian, he coordinated allied forces over the comms while the Pathfinder confronted the kett leader, the Archon.
