Skyllian Blitz
The siege of Elysium
The Skyllian Blitz was a massed pirate and slaver assault on the human colony of Elysium in 2176 CE, partly funded by batarian financiers in reprisal for human expansion into the Skyllian Verge. The colony's defenders held off the attackers until Alliance reinforcements arrived, and the Blitz later prompted a major Alliance offensive against batarian pirate bases on Torfan.
The Skyllian Blitz was a major assault on the human colony of Elysium in 2176 CE. A large band of pirates, slavers, and batarian warlords, partly funded by batarian financiers, struck into the Skyllian Verge intending to destroy the colony. The attack was in part a batarian reprisal for human expansion into the Verge and in part a response to the tensions raised by Alliance campaigns to suppress piracy. The defenders of Elysium held until reinforcements arrived, and the Blitz became one of the defining tests of the Alliance military's resolve.
Background#
By 2176 the human Systems Alliance had been expanding into the Skyllian Verge, a frontier region that brought it into friction with the batarians and with the pirate bands of the nearby Terminus Systems. The Blitz drew on those grievances: it was partly a batarian reprisal for human encroachment on the Verge and partly a reaction to Alliance campaigns aimed at suppressing piracy. The decision to mount the attack was driven by a single figure, the pirate Elanos Haliat, who intended to use the prestige of a successful strike to cement his standing as leader of the many pirate bands of the Terminus Systems.
The assault#
A huge coalition of pirates, slavers, and batarian warlords, underwritten by batarian financiers, descended on Elysium intending to destroy the colony. The people of Elysium and the Alliance rallied to its defense. On the ground, small teams of Alliance Marines on leave and armed civilians held off the raiders, while overhead the Alliance Navy, including the vessel SSV Agincourt, engaged the pirate ships. According to those who served aboard, the pirate fleet was no match for the Navy, which destroyed enemy ships faster than its crews could count. The ground fighting was far harder, but the defenders held out for several hours. When reinforcements at last arrived, the surviving attackers turned and fled in whatever vessels they had left.
Aftermath#
The defense of Elysium was widely regarded as proof of the training and adaptability of the Alliance military. Two years later, in 2178 CE, the Blitz led to a major operation against the batarian pirate bases on Torfan, intended to root out those responsible. Among the batarians, some remained bitter over the failure of the Blitz, claiming it had been just retribution for humanity's actions against their people.
A test of legend#
The Blitz is closely tied to the early reputation of Commander Shepard. In some accounts, Shepard was present at Elysium as a war hero, rallying the colonists and, when enemy forces broke through the defenses, single-handedly holding the line and sealing the breach, an act for which the Commander received the Star of Terra and lasting renown across the Alliance. In other accounts, Shepard's mark was made in the ruthless retaliatory assault on Torfan rather than at Elysium itself. By either account, Shepard is held to have been present during the Skyllian Blitz, whatever commendation followed.
