the up-armed Raptor gunship

By Joe Garratt

The Raptor Mark IIIb Heavy was a multipurpose spacecraft used by the Colonial Fleet. A modification of the Raptor Mark III, this variant carried heavy underslung armament and missile pods, adapting the fleet's workhorse support craft into a gunship.

Role and design#

The Raptor was a compact, FTL-equipped craft built for both atmospheric and space operations. The post-Fall Colonial Fleet typically used it for reconnaissance, rescues, and emergency evacuations, and it also assisted Viper squadrons in a combat support role, deploying electronic countermeasures to jam Cylon transmissions and to guide weapons control signals. Although its angular, utilitarian design limited its maneuverability, even regular lightly armed Raptors could be reconfigured as combat or attack platforms. The Mark IIIb Heavy was the dedicated up-armed expression of that flexibility, building on the standard Mark IIIb.

Armament#

With an arsenal of weapons fitted to its hardpoints, the Heavy configuration carried wing-mounted kinetic energy weapons, ventral automatic cannons, and ship-to-ship conventional and nuclear missiles. Rocket launcher pods, each loaded with twelve missiles, were mounted on either side of the cockpit.

Crew and complement#

The Heavy Raptor was operated by a two-person crew consisting of a pilot and a co-pilot who also served as electronic countermeasures operative. Beyond its crew, the craft could carry up to ten passengers or eight mission-equipped Marines.
