Birth of the Rahaga

The Mutation of the Toa Hagah by Roodaka

The recognition arrived in stages. The route inside took time. IruiniLhikanToa of Fire, leader of the Toa Mangai, and the last Toa of Metru Nui, who surrendered his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru and died defending Vakama. asked, somewhere along it, why the AvohkiiKanohi Mask of Light and ShadowA single fused Kanohi formed in Energized Protodermis when Takanuva and Teridax merged into Takutanuva, holding both light and shadow at once. needed to be recovered at all rather than simply held away from the BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. by being lost in a sufficiently inaccessible place. NorikLhikanToa of Fire, leader of the Toa Mangai, and the last Toa of Metru Nui, who surrendered his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru and died defending Vakama. answered with the team's history: the AvohkiiKanohi Mask of Light and ShadowA single fused Kanohi formed in Energized Protodermis when Takanuva and Teridax merged into Takutanuva, holding both light and shadow at once. had been the trigger by which the Hagah had discovered the BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit.'s corruption in the first place, and the mask itself was the only physical proof of the secret the rebellion had been founded on. The mask had to come out of the fortress with them. IruiniLhikanToa of Fire, leader of the Toa Mangai, and the last Toa of Metru Nui, who surrendered his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru and died defending Vakama. repeated his earlier intention: he would leave the team after the rescue. The implication, that he regarded the war against the BrotherhoodThe Brotherhood of MakutaAn organization of Makuta created by Mata Nui to police his universe and build Rahi, later seized by Teridax and turned into the instrument of the Plan that overthrew the Great Spirit. as an obligation rather than a calling, was understood by NorikLhikanToa of Fire, leader of the Toa Mangai, and the last Toa of Metru Nui, who surrendered his Toa Power to create the Toa Metru and died defending Vakama. and was not contested.

Significance#

The mutation produced two long-running consequences. The first was the survival of the AvohkiiKanohi Mask of Light and ShadowA single fused Kanohi formed in Energized Protodermis when Takanuva and Teridax merged into Takutanuva, holding both light and shadow at once.. The second was the existence of the Rahaga themselves. Frequently asked questions

How were the Rahaga created?
The Rahaga were created in a single engagement at a Brotherhood of Makuta fortress, when the six Toa Hagah were caught by the Rhotuka spinners of Roodaka and mutated into small, hunched, Rahkshi-faced forms. Roodaka named the resulting form Rahaga.
Why did the Toa Hagah turn against the Brotherhood of Makuta?
The Toa Hagah had been assembled as an honour guard for the Brotherhood of Makuta, but they turned against their employers after learning the Brotherhood had stolen the Kanohi Avohkii, the Mask of Light, and was concealing it in one of its fortresses. Four of the six were captured during the rebellion, while Norik and Iruini retained the Avohkii and the freedom to act.
What happened when Norik and Iruini reached the prison?
Iruini used his Kanohi Kualsi to teleport ahead to the prison and found four short, hunched figures with Rahkshi-faced features inside, the four captured Hagah mutated past recognition. Roodaka arrived, fired a Rhotuka spinner at the four prisoners, and named the new form Rahaga.
How did Norik and Iruini become Rahaga themselves?
After Norik and Iruini combined Fire and Air into a tornado of lava to cover the escape, Roodaka fired two further Rhotuka spinners through the tornado that struck them both in the back as they turned to follow the others out. The mutation took hold immediately, reducing the pair to the same hunched, Rahkshi-faced form as the other four.
Why did Roodaka let the Rahaga escape?
Roodaka ordered the Visorak to break off the pursuit, judging that six powerless mutated Toa were no longer a threat to the Brotherhood and preferring the propaganda of leaving them alive. She did not notice that the Avohkii was leaving the fortress with the six Rahaga as they ran.
