Is Mata Nui a God?

To the Matoran he was, but the story reveals Mata Nui is a giant robot with a mind, built by the Great Beings to repair their world. He can be poisoned, put to sleep, killed and robbed of his body. Here is how the legend and the truth compare.

By Joe Garratt

Not in the way the Matoran believed. To them Mata NuiMata NuiBuilt by the Great Beings to restore Spherus Magna, Mata Nui sustained an entire civilisation inside his body, was deposed by Teridax, and reclaimed his purpose as a mortal on Bara Magna. was the Great Spirit, who came down from the heavens and watched over their world. The story reveals he's something stranger: a vast robot with a mind of its own, built by the Great BeingsThe Great BeingsScholar-inventors of Spherus Magna whose creations shaped the Matoran Universe and whose absence defined the conflicts that followed., with the whole Matoran Universe living inside him. He's powerful enough to look like a god to the people inside, but he can be poisoned, killed and thrown out of his own body. (BIONICLE: Mask of Light; All Our Sins Remembered; BIONICLE Legends 11: The Final Battle)

The god of the legend#

BIONICLE: Mask of Light begins with the legend as the Matoran know it. In the time before time, the Great Spirit descended from the heavens carrying the Matoran to their paradise, and blessed them with unity, duty and destiny. In gratitude, they named their island after him. (BIONICLE: Mask of Light)

That's a god in every way that matters to the people telling it. He's their creator figure, their protector and the centre of their virtues, and the whole aim of the early story is to wake him from the sleep Makuta cast on him. (BIONICLE: Mask of Light)

The robot behind the legend#

The later story pulls back the curtain. The Great Beings of Spherus Magna built Mata Nui as an enormous robot to repair their planet after it was shattered into a desert world and two moons. The Matoran Universe, with its cities, seas and Matoran workers, sits inside his body. (All Our Sins Remembered; The Yesterday Quest)

His powers are real, though. He brings the MakutaMakuta: species, title, and TeridaxMakuta means three things in the Matoran Universe: the Antidermis species Mata Nui created, the Brotherhood rank, and most often Teridax himself. into being from antidermis to serve his will, and in The Legend Reborn he remembers ruling the universe inside him. (BIONICLE: Makuta's Guide to the Universe; BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn)

What a god shouldn't be able to suffer#

Mata Nui's story is full of things that happen to him rather than because of him.

  • TeridaxTeridaxTeridax orchestrated a thousand-year scheme that ended with him occupying the Great Spirit Robot itself before his death on Bara Magna. strikes him down and he spends a thousand years asleep at the bottom of a sea. (BIONICLE Legends 11: The Final Battle)
  • He dies at the end of the hunt for the Mask of Life, and only comes back because MatoroMatoroA quiet Ko-Matoran translator who became a Toa Inika and then a Toa Mahri, Matoro gave his life with the Mask of Life to restore Mata Nui. gives his own life to revive him. (BIONICLE Legends 8: Downfall)
  • Teridax moves into his body and fires his spirit into space inside the Mask of LifeThe Mask of Life (Kanohi Ignika), explainedA failsafe forged by the Great Beings to recharge a god. It curses everyone who touches it, and by the end of Bionicle it had learned how to be a hero.. (BIONICLE Legends 11: The Final Battle)

On Bara Magna he has to learn humility. The Legend Reborn opens with him remembering that he was once a towering giant, "ruler of my own universe", then stripped of his power. When a scarab beetle helps him in his first moments on the planet, he thanks it: "Before this day, I never needed help from anyone or anything." (BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn)

Godlike at the end#

Interpretation: the finale is where he comes closest. After killing Teridax, he pours the last power of his prototype robot into the reunited planet and covers it in life, then speaks to everyone on Spherus Magna before his spirit returns to the mask. That's a creation act on a planetary scale, and the Matoran watching would be forgiven for calling it divine. (BIONICLE Glatorian 7: Rebirth)

But even then he's finishing a job someone else gave him. His makers aren't gods either. The serials show individual Great Beings as people with their own plans, one of whom had secretly moved his mind into a being from the Matoran Universe. (BIONICLE Glatorian 7: Rebirth; The Yesterday Quest)

Interpretation: the best way to put it is that Mata Nui is a god to the Matoran and a machine to the people who built him, and the story is interested in both at once. He grows from a ruler who never needed anyone into a being who cares about the small people around him, which is more than most gods manage. (BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn; BIONICLE Glatorian 7: Rebirth)

Who created Mata Nui?
The Great Beings, a group of inventors on the planet Spherus Magna. They built him so he could one day repair their world after it was shattered.
