What Happened to Mata Nui?

What he was#

Years later the Turaga discover from the stars that he is dying, and the Toa NuvaToa NuvaThe form the Toa Mata took after stepping into the Energized Protodermis beneath the Bahrag, with new masks, new tools, and the elemental scale to fight Karda Nui. are sent to find the Mask of Life on the island of Voya Nui. The quest runs on into the sea beneath Voya Nui, and the Great Spirit's life actually runs out before the end. MatoroMatoroA quiet Ko-Matoran translator who became a Toa Inika and then a Toa Mahri, Matoro gave his life with the Mask of Life to restore Mata Nui., the Toa of Ice, puts on the Mask of Life and gives his own life to revive him. Robbed of his body#

In BIONICLE Legends 11: The Final Battle, the Toa Nuva finish the job at Karda Nui and Mata Nui's body wakes. Then Teridax's voice rings out. He had moved his own spirit into the Great Spirit's body before Mata Nui's spirit could return, and now he controls the robot and everyone inside it. Mata Nui's spirit is sealed in the Mask of Life, and Teridax fires the mask out into space. (BIONICLE Legends 11: The Final Battle)

A new body on Bara Magna#

The mask comes down on the desert world of Bara Magna and builds him a body from the sand. BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn opens with Mata Nui's own summary: "Once I was a towering giant, ruler of my own universe," until he was betrayed and everything he had was stolen. He unites the Agori and Glatorian, defeats the Skrall and exposes the traitor Metus. (BIONICLE: The Legend Reborn)

He then finds that the scrap the villagers had built with for generations was really an older prototype robot. In Journey's End, he leaves his sand body and moves his spirit into it. (BIONICLE Glatorian 5: Valley of Fear; BIONICLE Glatorian 6: All That Glitters)

The last battle#

When Teridax charges a blast to destroy the planet, Mata Nui knocks it into the two moons, which start falling towards Bara Magna, and then shoves Teridax into the path of a rock breaking off Aqua Magna. As the moons rejoin the planet, Mata Nui pours the last power of the prototype into it and covers the restored Spherus Magna with life. The robot crumbles. His spirit returns to the Mask of Life, and he speaks to everyone one last time. When Kiina asks if he's gone, Tahu tells her he isn't. (BIONICLE Glatorian 7: Rebirth)

Where he is now#

Inside the mask. The serial The Yesterday Quest opens with a mission he left behind: the Great Beings were to be told their job was done. The serials stopped before anyone found them, so Generation 1 ends with Mata Nui at rest and his work finished. (The Yesterday Quest)
