Hanford Carthusia
Manager of the Aegis VII Colony
Hanford Carthusia was the Unitologist project manager of the Aegis VII mining colony at the time of the Second Aegis VII Incident. His devotion to the Red Marker and his refusal to heed warnings about the spreading violence helped doom the colony, and he offered himself to a freshly reanimated Necromorph in the morgue.
Hanford Carthusia was the project manager of the Aegis VII mining colony and one of the senior figures present during the outbreak there. A wealthy Unitologist placed at the head of the operation through family connections, he treated the Red Marker recovered from the dig as something to be guarded rather than feared, and his refusal to act on the warning signs around him made the disaster on the colony worse. He died offering himself to a Necromorph in the morgue, faithful to the end.
Background#
Hanford Carthusia was born into a wealthy family of bankers and executives in the pan-European sector of Earth. His family had been a respected pillar of the Church of Unitology for three generations, and his own generation was no exception. Almost all of its members were Vested, and at least one was known to be an Overseer.
Carthusia worked in a variety of family-owned businesses across energy, manufacturing, and distribution, advancing through middle management with a genuine talent for strategy and for protecting the bottom line. Promotion followed, and he proved to have equal skill in the boardroom.
CEC career#
Through his family's connections, Carthusia came to the attention of prominent Unitologists in the upper ranks of the Concordance Extraction Corporation and was headhunted at their request. His family gave their blessing, seeing the move as a chance to increase their influence in both business and the Church. He joined the CEC as an assistant project manager and rose quickly to become an overall project manager with full jurisdiction over his assigned mining colony.
He presided over four planet cracks, and it was widely expected within the company that he would reach executive level and work exclusively from CEC headquarters on Earth. His wife and three children, who lived on Earth under the protection of his powerful extended family, looked forward to that day.
The Second Aegis VII Incident#
Carthusia was in close contact with Captain Benjamin Mathius of the USG Ishimura before the planet crack, and like the captain he was a devout Unitologist. He grew increasingly unpopular among the colonists, the colony's security force, and even other Unitologists because of his arrogance and his protectiveness of the Red Marker. He refused to heed concerns raised by security officers and by Chief Medical Officer Tom Sciarello about the rising number of violent incidents following the Marker's discovery, would not abandon the mining operation, and went so far as to have the Marker brought into the colony.
Shortly before the planet crack, Mathius informed Carthusia that he would not be joining him aboard the Ishimura because of the violence spreading through the colony. Outraged, Carthusia abruptly cut communications with the captain and withheld the bodies of the victims of a mass suicide in Union Square, a decision that would prove devastating for the colony. After the planet crack he visited the morgue and lamented that the bodies had been left behind. Remaining faithful and proclaiming that they would all ascend, he offered himself to a Slasher that had just reanimated among the dead, and it killed him. When the medical staff later arrived, his body was gone from the morgue, suggesting that Carthusia had himself been reanimated into a Necromorph.
