Glenn: Aegis VII Dig Team Miner

Glenn was a Concordance Extraction Corporation miner stationed at the Aegis VII colony, where he served on dig foreman Colin Barrow's team alongside a fellow miner named Jackson. He took part in the extraction of Marker 3A, the artifact whose unearthing preceded the Necromorph outbreak that consumed the colony, and he was among the first on the surface to argue aloud that the object was responsible for the violence spreading through the settlement. During the blackout that followed the planet crack he disappeared without a trace, and no record of his fate was ever recovered.

A miner on Barrow's dig team#

Nothing was recorded of Glenn's life before his employment on Aegis VII, the remote mining world that the CEC had marked for a full planet crack operation. By the time of the colony's final weeks he was an auburn haired, green eyed man in a standard miner's RIG, working under dig foreman Colin Barrow as part of the crew handling the most sensitive find in the colony's history.

That find was Marker 3A, the towering artifact uncovered by the dig team led by the geologist Jennifer Barrow, the foreman's wife. Once the object had been excavated, Colin Barrow was charged with transporting it into the colony, and he carried out the task with the miners Glenn and Jackson at his side. Jackson operated the tram shuttle that hauled the artifact in from the dig site, while Glenn worked closely with Barrow through the extraction itself. Even Barrow, a committed skeptic, admitted to a moment of intense discomfort when the Marker was pulled from the ground, though it did nothing to change his reading of the situation on the planet.

Misgivings about the Marker#

The colony had already begun to sicken around the artifact by the time it was moved. Colonists were succumbing to dementia, and the settlement logged a wave of suicides and murders in the period following the discovery. It was against that backdrop that Jackson remarked that the Marker had to be cursed. Barrow dismissed the idea out of hand, but Glenn refused to let it drop. He asked the foreman whether the thing did not unsettle him too, and pointed directly at the pattern nobody in authority wanted to name: the suicides, the murders, the sense that everyone on the rock was losing their grip.

Barrow's answer was the answer of a company man. Strange things happened in deep space, he told Glenn, and his only concern was finishing the operation so that all of them could go home. The exchange marked Glenn as one of the few workers on the surface willing to say plainly that the artifact and the colony's unraveling were connected, an assessment that the events of the following days would bear out in full.

The planet crack and the blackout#

When the planet crack was executed, the colony below fell into a blackout, and the Necromorph outbreak that had been building in the shadows erupted into open slaughter. Glenn and Barrow were spared the initial massacre by pure circumstance: the two men were piloting a shuttle at a distance from the colony when the killing began on the ground.

The flight back was the point at which Glenn's own mind began to give way. Marker induced dementia had already claimed colonists across the settlement, and aboard the shuttle Glenn watched the image of Captain Benjamin Mathius on the comlink screen in front of him twist into a hideous, multi faced monster that lunged out of the display at him. He shook the hallucination off, but what he said next showed how deeply the artifact had worked into his thinking. All of their problems, he told Barrow, came from the planet "pushing back" against the destabilization of the harmony of the universe. Barrow snapped that it was nothing but Unitologist nonsense, the same Unitology talk he had been waving away since the Marker surfaced, and the conversation ended there.

Disappearance#

The shuttle set down in a colony already lost. The Corruption, the fleshy organic growth that spread ahead of the Necromorphs, was forming along the halls when Glenn and Barrow disembarked. Barrow immediately went to check on his wife Jennifer, and in doing so left Glenn standing alone in the darkened corridors.

The colony's failing lights began to flicker around him, then shut off completely. When they came back on a second later, Glenn was nowhere to be seen. There was no body, no scream on record, and no sign of a struggle. He simply was not there anymore.

No account of Glenn's fate ever surfaced. He was listed among the colonists present on Aegis VII at the time of the outbreak, and his status was never confirmed one way or the other. Given what followed, hope was thin: the colony was overrun, and the horror climbed from the surface to the USG Ishimura in orbit, where Barrow himself died in a shuttle bay at the hands of his wife's reanimated corpse. Whether Glenn was taken by a Necromorph in that instant of darkness or met some other end in the dying colony, the man who had warned that the planet was pushing back vanished into the same catastrophe he had been among the first to see coming.
