By Joe Garratt

Mark Rosen was an Earth Defense Force pilot assigned to the USM Eudora. Together with his co-pilot Locke, he flew the ship sent to recover Isaac Clarke and carry the group toward Tau Volantis, and like most of that expedition he did not survive the journey.

Journey to Tau Volantis#

Mark Rosen served as a pilot of the USM Eudora alongside his co-pilot, Locke. The two flew the Eudora down to the New Horizons Lunar Colony to secure Isaac Clarke from the Circle then commanded by Jacob Danik. Under the orders of Captain Robert Norton, Rosen and Locke took the ship into ShockSpace along the last known coordinates used by Ellie Langford.

When the Eudora reached Tau Volantis, it was bombarded and badly crippled by the mines the Sovereign Colonies flotilla had left in orbit. In the scramble for safety Rosen injured his leg and was left incapacitated. The destruction of the ship sent the compartment in which he and Locke were sealed hurtling into the debris field of the abandoned fleet. Norton, Clarke, and John Carver evaded the mines, regained control of the drifting compartment, and steered it to shelter inside the CMS Roanoke. Rosen kept losing blood from his wound despite Locke's efforts to stop it, and as the compartment also bled air, Norton and Carver tended the pilots while Isaac fixed the position of Langford's distress signal.

The Crozier and the descent#

Once Langford and her team had been found, Rosen reluctantly joined the salvage of parts for the CMS Crozier so the shuttle could be made to fly. Recovering a working S.C.A.F. EVA suit, he located the aft section of another shuttle near the CMS Greely with its engine still intact, and with Isaac's help he towed the engine back to the Roanoke and installed it in the Crozier.

When the repaired Crozier carried the group down toward the planet, the debris and mines tore at it again. A hull breach opened at Locke's station and pulled her out into the atmosphere, killing her. As the shuttle fell further and broke apart, its containment glass gave way and shrapnel shaken loose from the ship struck Rosen in the head, killing him at once. Isaac later came upon Rosen's body buried beneath the snow in the remains of the Crozier, digging it up in the belief that it was Ellie and casting it aside when he saw that it was not.

What happened to the USM Eudora?
When the Eudora arrived at Tau Volantis, it was bombarded and crippled by mines left by the S.C.A.F. flotilla. Rosen injured his leg and was incapacitated, and the compartment he and Locke were sealed in was thrown into the debris field of the abandoned fleet before being guided to shelter in the CMS Roanoke.
How did Mark Rosen die?
During the final descent to Tau Volantis aboard the repaired CMS Crozier, the shuttle deteriorated, its containment glass breached, and shrapnel shaken loose from the ship struck Rosen in the head and killed him. Isaac Clarke later found his body buried in the snow in the wreck of the Crozier.
