Mnemosyne was the Titaness of Memory and Remembrance, a daughter of Gaia and Ouranos who turned against her own kind to stand with the Olympians in the Great War. She became a lover of Zeus and the mother of the nine Muses, yet she was at last imprisoned in Tartarus for opposing his cruelty.

Birth and the rise of the Olympians#

Mnemosyne was born of Gaia and Ouranos, one of the elder Titans, alongside her sister Themis, and she became the embodiment of Memory and Remembrance. After Cronos overthrew and slew their father, she, like many Titans, became one of his close allies, pledging herself to him out of fear that she might suffer the same fate as Ouranos. Yet she never agreed with his cruel methods.

When the youngest of Cronos's children, who would be known as Zeus, came of age and freed his brothers and sisters, the Titans and the new Olympians went to war. Mnemosyne, like Themis, took no part in the fighting. Instead she allied herself with Zeus and his fledgling pantheon, and when the war was won she was granted the status of a goddess.

Mother of the Muses, and her fall#

In the aftermath of the Great War, Mnemosyne became the lover of Zeus. The two were lovers for a time, and over nine nights they conceived the nine Muses, the goddesses of arts and knowledge. Among the daughters born of her line was Calliope, after whom Kratos would later name his own daughter, Calliope.

In the end Mnemosyne could not abide what Zeus had become. She disapproved of his hunger for control and power over mortals, and she condemned his cruelty toward the Titans, whom he stripped of their roles and denied their rights. For refusing to support his vengeance against her former kindred, she was imprisoned in Tartarus. There she remained beside the River Lethe, the water of forgetting, while the souls of the dead drank from it to lose the memory of their past lives. When the fallen Kratos passed through Tartarus, weary and longing for the gift of oblivion, Mnemosyne and her sister Themis were nowhere to be seen, and they did not aid the Titans when the second war against Olympus came.
