Pegasus was a great winged horse of the Greek world, gray of coat with wings wreathed in flame. Sent forth by Gaia to aid Kratos in his war against Olympus, he carried the Spartan through the skies on the long journey toward the Sisters of Fate.
The horse of legend#
In the older tales of Greece the Pegasus was a winged horse born of the blood of Medusa after the hero Perseus struck off her head, springing from her body alongside the golden warrior Chrysaor. The creature was counted among the children of Poseidon. Once it had carried the hero Bellerophon in his quest to slay the Chimera, and it was most often described as a horse white as snow, though some told that it was black as night.
Gaia's messenger#
After Zeus cast Kratos down and the Spartan was drawn back from the brink of death by Gaia, the Titan sought to set him on the path to the Sisters of Fate, that he might turn back time and prevent the fall of the Titans before it came. To bear him on this journey she sent forth Pegasus, a gray horse with flaming wings.
Gaia first directed Kratos to the Titan Typhon to seek aid. Riding Pegasus through the air, the Spartan fought his way past Griffins and the Raven, but on entering Typhon's lair the Titan trapped the winged horse beneath one of his enormous hands. Unwilling to aid an Olympian, Typhon refused him, and Kratos fought his way free, taking from the Titan the weapon known as Typhon's Bane before steering Pegasus clear of the lair.
The fall above the Island of Creation#
Having freed the horse, Kratos flew on, only to meet more Griffins and at their head the Dark Rider, leader of the pack. In the battle the Dark Rider's great mount tackled Pegasus and sent the winged horse plummeting toward the earth. Kratos leapt from the falling horse to the back of the Dark Griffin and carried the fight onward toward the Island of Creation. The ultimate fate of Pegasus was never made certain, and because the Spartan had passed back through time, it was thought that the horse might yet have lived on through the ruin that later befell Greece.
