Raloi

The Avian Newcomers of Turvess

The raloi were an avian, feathered species from the planet Turvess who made first contact with the asari in 2184 after their first space telescope spotted an asari cruiser. Newly welcomed to galactic society, they withdrew and isolated themselves at the onset of the Reaper War.

By Joe Garratt

The raloi were an avian species originating on the planet Turvess, who made first contact with the asari in 2184 CE after launching their first space telescope and discovering the asari cruiser Azedes in their system. Among the newest peoples to enter galactic society, they had barely begun to learn its workings before the Reaper invasion drove them to withdraw and isolate themselves once more.

Biology#

The raloi were avian in appearance and possessed feathers. Following an outbreak of an alien flu virus among them during the ceremonies held to welcome them to the galactic community, the raloi were obliged to wear environmental suits whenever in contact with other species.

First contact and welcome#

The raloi made first contact with the asari in 2184 CE, after launching their first space telescope and discovering the asari cruiser Azedes in their system. They appeared to have been known to the elcor far earlier, however, since an elcor mnemonic referencing the raloi was considered common knowledge among the elcor at least three generations before the official discovery. In 2185 the Citadel Council formally welcomed the raloi to the galactic community. Council-sponsored shuttles arrived at Turvess bearing intrigued visitors and gifts of good will, though at one point krogan representatives of the delegation were ejected after introducing a violent sport that caused multiple deaths and injuries. After the ceremonies, a raloi delegation was dispatched to the Citadel for a three-month stay to learn about galactic law, history, alien biology and culture, and mass effect physics.

Withdrawal from the galaxy#

In 2186, during the Reaper invasion, the raloi delegation withdrew from the Citadel. Unwilling and unable to fight the Reapers, they decided to isolate themselves on Turvess and destroy any satellites and observation equipment in orbit around their planet, hoping the Reapers would regard them as a pre-spaceflight civilization and spare their world.
