Alina Seo: the Woman in Elster's Photo in Signalis

Alina Seo is the Gestalt worker Elster believes she is searching for during the first half of Signalis. Her four diary entries follow S-23 Sierpinski as it falls, and end with her remembering a life that isn't hers.

By Joe Garratt

Alina Seo is a Gestalt, a natural-born human, who worked at S-23 Sierpinski and once served as a soldier in the People's Army. She matters because Elster spends the first half of Signalis looking for her: the photo Elster carries shows Alina's face, and Adler names her when he sees it. The false ending reveals that the woman Elster wanted was Ariane Yeong all along. (Signalis)

Who is Alina Seo?#

Elster arrives at Sierpinski carrying a photograph, and Adler looks at it and says "Alina Seo", adding that he believes she is one of the facility's factory workers. Then he says "You shouldn't have returned" and pushes Elster down a lift shaft full of dead Elster units. (Signalis)

The photo is the strange part. On the crashed Penrose-512 at the start, the photo Elster picks up shows a white-haired woman. By the time she stands at the mirror in Sierpinski, it shows a different woman in uniform, and Elster is certain this is the person she came for. (Signalis)

Alina also turns up in a group photograph found in the Yeong photo shop in Rotfront, labelled People's Army, 5th Vinetan Infantry Division, Unit 12. Ariane's mother remarked in a letter on how much one of the soldiers in it looked like Ariane. (Signalis)

Alina's diaries#

Her four entries are found along Elster's route, and they read as a short story of the facility falling apart. (Signalis)

  • In the worker dorms: she feels light-headed and hopes it isn't "that new flu", because she can't afford to miss shifts after a Storch chewed her out for fainting. She hasn't seen Elster for a few days, and more people, Replikas included, are going missing in the mine. (Signalis, "Alina's Diary")
  • In the hospital: she wakes to find the Protektors won't let her leave her room, though the wound from her fall has healed. She overhears two Eules saying they are running out of staff, and decides she can't sit still while Elster is missing. (Signalis)
  • In the mines: everyone has gone. There is no trace of Elster, "as if she had never been here". A guard chases her with "a monstrous scream", and she can't forget its ruined face. (Signalis)
  • In Nowhere: she doesn't know how long she has been "down here" or how she got there. Her hair is turning white. "I remember my name, and I remember my life. But I also remember a different name, and a different life, and it feels like the line between her and me is blurring the longer I stay here." (Signalis)

Which Elster did Alina know?#

Not the one we play. Alina's Elster was a unit at Sierpinski itself. Adler's diaries describe ordering an LSTR unit for the excavation, then remembering a conversation with an engineer "with an orange chest-piece" who, he insists, was never stationed there. Alina is one of the few people who remembers her at all. The Signalis timeline and the Replika page cover how Sierpinski's Elsters relate to Ariane's. (Signalis, "Adler's Diary")

How the mix-up ends#

At the red gate after Nowhere, Elster walks out to the Penrose-512 and two questions fill the screen: who are you, and what are you looking for? Flashbacks show the war on Vineta and a soldier standing next to Alina Seo. The answer arrives: the face Elster has been chasing is not Alina's but Ariane's. This is the false ending, explained on the Signalis endings page. (Signalis)

What is stated and what is theory#

The game states that Alina was a Sierpinski worker and a soldier, that she knew the facility's Elster, and that her final diary describes another woman's memories crowding in. It never explains why Elster's photo changed or what happened to Alina after that last entry. (Signalis)

The usual reading is that Elster's template, a Vinetan soldier, served beside Alina, and that Elster's broken memory swapped Ariane's face for her look-alike. A second reading takes the last diary at face value: Alina is being overwritten by Ariane, the way Falke was flooded with Elster's memories past the red gate, and her whitening hair is the sign. Players who think Ariane is bioresonant see this as her influence at work; see bioresonance for what the game does and doesn't say about that. None of these readings is confirmed. (Signalis)

Frequently asked questions

Who is Alina in Signalis?
Alina Seo is a Gestalt worker at S-23 Sierpinski and a former soldier of the People's Army. Elster carries her photo for the first half of the game and believes Alina is the person she has come to find, until the false ending shows it was Ariane all along.
Why does Elster think she is looking for Alina?
The game doesn't spell it out. The photo Elster carries shows Ariane on the Penrose-512 but Alina once she reaches Sierpinski, and Ariane's mother remarked on how much the two women looked alike. Most players read it as Elster's damaged memory putting the wrong face on the woman she loves.
Is Alina Ariane in Signalis?
The game never says so. Alina's last diary entry says she remembers "a different name, and a different life" and that her hair is turning white, which many players read as Alina being overwritten by Ariane. It is a reading, not a stated fact.
What happens to Alina Seo?
Her last diary is found in Nowhere, the flesh maze under the mines, and nothing more is said about her. The game never shows what became of her.
