S-23 Sierpinski: the AEON Labour Facility on Leng
S-23 Sierpinski is the AEON re-education and mining facility on Leng where most of Signalis takes place. By the time Elster arrives its workers are dead, its Replikas have turned, and the same days seem to be repeating.
S-23 Sierpinski is the AEON facility on Leng where most of Signalis takes place: a mine, munitions factory and re-education centre at the frontier of the solar system, run by Replikas and worked by relocated Gestalts. When Elster arrives it is already dead. Its staff are sick or gone, its guards have turned, and the mine below it leads somewhere that shouldn't exist. (Signalis)
What is S-23 Sierpinski?#
The leaflet "Welcome to S-23 Sierpinski" tells new arrivals they have "been selected or have elected to be relocated by AEON". It describes the facility as a vocational school "located on Leng, at the frontier of the solar system", where workers learn mineral extraction, ore refinement and munition production, helping the war effort against what is left of the Empire. It offers a ration-sharing plan so part of a worker's pay can go to family. (Signalis, "Welcome to S-23 Sierpinski")
The floors Elster explores tell a harsher story. The facility's own map names them: re-education, worker accommodations, the new and old medical wards, a service level, staff, Protektor and controller accommodations. Gestalt dormitories are cramped bunks, while Replika dorms hold the music, mirrors, books and other comforts their Known Issues files say each model needs to stay stable. Interrogation reports and records of confiscated belongings turn up along the way. (Signalis)
Who ran S-23?#
Command followed the standard AEON structure. Falke commanded the Protektors, with Adler handling administration and a cadre of Kolibris amplifying her bioresonance. Storch controllers led squads of STAR guards; Eule and Ara units did domestic and repair work, and Mynah units worked the mines. A note from Storch Sieben shows the controllers trying to cover day and night shifts as staff fell ill, waiting for "reinforcements... from Heimat". (Signalis)
What went wrong at S-23?#
Adler tells Elster that Falke went beyond the red gate in the mines and came back sick and changed. Falke's diary blames "the red eye beyond the gate". Adler's diary traces what followed: rumours of a flu among the Gestalt workers, Replikas filling the hospital wing, Gestalts dying too fast to treat. His last note says the Gestalt workers died "leaving only dark shadows on walls and floors where they died", and that the Replikas were turning into "masses of flesh". (Signalis, "Falke's Diary"; Signalis, "Adler's Note")
The diaries also show time going wrong. Adler finds entries all dated 84-21-D, remembers an LSTR engineer who, he writes, was never stationed there, and concludes the illness was "a slow corruption of reality itself". A Kolibri's note says there is no record of an LSTR unit at the facility, and that an order for one was considered but never made. Alina Seo's diaries describe the facility emptying around her and an Elster unit she knew vanishing, "as if she had never been here". The Signalis timeline puts the diary dates in order. (Signalis)
The mines and what lies below#
Below the floors are the mines, where Mynahs dug and Adler hunted Isa Itou. A hatch leads further down into Nowhere, a maze of flesh and impossible rooms. A Rotfront dream diary describes a worker "in the mines of Leng" consumed by "a shapeless mass of flesh" whose mind joined "the collective of flesh, which persists beyond death". Past Nowhere is the red gate, where Elster finds Adler and, beyond it, the wreck of the Penrose. (Signalis, "Dream Diary")
Interpretations#
The game never says why the loop began or who is causing it. The most common reading is that the dying Ariane, sealed in the Penrose's cryo pod and assumed to be bioresonant, is reshaping S-23 through her dreams, and that what Falke met past the gate was Ariane's influence. Others give more weight to The King in Yellow and the flesh below. Both readings rest on the same documents and neither is confirmed. (Signalis)
Frequently asked questions
- What is S-23 Sierpinski in Signalis?
- S-23 Sierpinski is an AEON facility on the frontier planet Leng where relocated Gestalt workers mine ore, make munitions and undergo re-education under Replika guards. Most of the game takes place there.
- What happened at S-23 Sierpinski?
- Commander Falke crossed the red gate in the mines and came back sick, and a sickness spread through the facility; the game never fixes the exact order. Gestalt workers died, leaving dark shadows where they fell, and most Replikas degraded into hostile units. Adler's diaries describe the facility reliving the same days.
- Why is it called Sierpinski?
- The game doesn't explain the name. It is generally taken as a reference to the mathematician Wacław Sierpiński and his triangle fractal, in line with other mathematical names such as Penrose and Mandelbrot.

Leng: the Frozen Frontier Planet of Signalis
Leng is the cold planet at the edge of the solar system where S-23 Sierpinski stands and where Elster wakes beside the crashed Penrose-512. Under its mines lies a sea of flesh, and its name points straight at Lovecraft.
Nowhere: the Flesh Maze Below Leng in Signalis
Nowhere is the maze of flesh, cages and shrines that Elster reaches at the bottom of the mines under S-23 Sierpinski. It holds the seals of The King in Yellow, Alina's last diary and the note called The Dreamer, and it leads to the red gate.
Adler: the Administrator Who Remembers the Loop
Adler is the ADLR administrator of S-23 Sierpinski, the Replika who throws Elster down a lift shaft and later blocks her at the red gate. His diaries show a bored bureaucrat slowly realising that the same days keep repeating, and that Elster has been here before.
AEON in Signalis: the Organisation That Runs S-23 Sierpinski
AEON is the Eusan Nation body that relocates workers, runs facilities like S-23 Sierpinski and stands behind the Protektors. The game never explains it in one place, so this page sticks to what its documents actually say.
Ariane Yeong: the Pilot at the Heart of Signalis
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512 and the person Elster has been searching for all along. Her notes, her school records and her room in Rotfront tell the story of a lonely art-loving girl who ran away to space and fell in love with her Replika.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.

Alina Seo: the Woman in Elster's Photo in Signalis
Alina Seo is the Gestalt worker Elster believes she is searching for during the first half of Signalis. Her four diary entries follow S-23 Sierpinski as it falls, and end with her remembering a life that isn't hers.
All Signalis Endings Explained: Promise, Memory, Leave and the Secret Ending
Signalis has a false ending, three main endings called Leave, Memory and Promise, and a secret fourth ending the results screen calls Artifact. What happens in each, how the game picks one, how to reach the secret ending, and what each one means.

Bioresonance in Signalis: the Power Behind Replikas, Falke and Kolibri
Bioresonance is the mind's ability to change the physical world, and in Signalis it runs everything from Replika production to the Falke commanders. Here is what the game's documents actually say about it, and where the popular theories about Ariane begin.
Falke: the Commander Who Looked Beyond the Red Gate
Falke is the FKLR unit who commanded the Protektors of S-23 Sierpinski and the final boss of Signalis. She crossed the red gate in the mines, came back sick, and was slowly overwritten by Elster's memories until she could no longer tell the two of them apart.
Isa Itou: the Girl Searching for Her Sister in Signalis
Isa Itou is the Gestalt Elster keeps running into at S-23 Sierpinski, a girl from Rotfront looking for her lost twin, Erika. She was Ariane's school friend, and her story ends in her family's bookshop.
Kolibri: the Psychic Hive-Mind Replikas of Signalis
Kolibri units are small, highly bioresonant Replikas who serve as adjutants to a Falke commander and share their thoughts as a cadre. At S-23 Sierpinski almost all of them have gone wrong, and the one who hasn't is hiding alone in the library.
