Leng: the Frozen Frontier Planet of Signalis

Leng is the cold planet at the edge of the solar system where S-23 Sierpinski stands and where Elster wakes beside the crashed Penrose-512. Under its mines lies a sea of flesh, and its name points straight at Lovecraft.

By Joe Garratt

Leng is the frozen planet where Signalis begins and most of it is played. The Eusan Nation calls it the frontier of the solar system, and its only settlement we see is the AEON labour facility S-23 Sierpinski. Elster wakes on its snowfields beside the crashed Penrose-512, and the mines beneath it lead down into a sea of flesh. (Signalis)

Where is Leng?#

The game's only direct description is the S-23 leaflet: the facility is "located on Leng, at the frontier of the solar system, S-23 Sierpinski is the perfect place for a new beginning". Nothing in the game names its star, its moons or its distance from Rotfront or Heimat. Fans have tried to match it to real outer-system bodies, but that is guesswork. (Signalis, "Welcome to S-23 Sierpinski")

What we see of it is snow and wind. The opening shows the Penrose-512 half buried, and Elster walks from the wreck through a gate and down into the ground. (Signalis)

What lies beneath Leng?#

The mines below S-23 were dug by Mynah units and Gestalt workers. Below them Elster finds Nowhere, a maze of meat-lined corridors, shrines and locked doors that the game's documents call a place of flesh. One note found there, "The Dreamer", reads: "Deep below, the dreamer floats in a sea of flesh, the red eye birthing a new world from their dream for eternity." (Signalis, "The Dreamer")

The Dream Diary, found in Rotfront, includes a dream that fits Leng exactly: "I was a worker in the mines of Leng, when I was consumed by a shapeless mass of flesh, my flesh joining with the flesh of many others, until only my bones remained. My mind joined the collective of flesh, which persists beyond death." (Signalis, "Dream Diary")

Past Nowhere is the red gate. Falke went through it before the game and came back sick, and Elster finds the Penrose-512 waiting on the other side. (Signalis)

Why is it called Leng?#

Signalis never explains the name. The obvious source is H. P. Lovecraft's Plateau of Leng, a cold, haunted tableland that appears in several of his stories, and it fits a game that also borrows The King in Yellow from Robert W. Chambers. Some players also point out that "leng" sounds like the Chinese word for cold. Both are readings, not anything the game confirms. (Signalis)

Leng in the story's interpretations#

Leng matters to the most common reading of the plot. If the Penrose crashed there, then Ariane, dying in its cryo pod, was lying on the same planet as S-23 when the facility started to fall apart. Players who read S-23 as reshaped by Ariane's bioresonance point to that closeness. The game doesn't confirm the cause. (Signalis)

Frequently asked questions

What is Leng in Signalis?
Leng is the planet "at the frontier of the solar system" where the AEON facility S-23 Sierpinski is built. It is frozen and snowbound, and the mines beneath the facility lead down into the flesh maze called Nowhere.
Did the Penrose-512 crash on Leng?
The game strongly implies it. Elster wakes beside the snowbound wreck, walks from it into S-23, and finds it again beyond the red gate at the bottom of the mines. No document gives the crash site a name, though.
Is Leng a Lovecraft reference?
Almost certainly. The Plateau of Leng is a cold, cursed place in H. P. Lovecraft's fiction, and Signalis is full of cosmic-horror references, including The King in Yellow. The game never states the connection.
