The Eusan Empire: the Fallen Empire of Signalis
The Empire of Eusan is the older power the Nation rebelled against, founded by a Grand Empress whose bioresonance is said to have united humanity and given life to the first Replikas. You never visit it in Signalis, but banned books, dreams and posters sketch it in.
The Empire of Eusan is the power that ruled humanity before the Eusan Nation, and the enemy the Nation is still fighting during Signalis. The game never takes you there. Everything we know comes from books the Nation has banned, propaganda aimed against it, and the dreams and visions that leak through the story. At its centre is the Grand Empress, a figure of enormous bioresonant power. (Signalis)
Who founded the Empire?#
"Song of the Gods" is the Empire speaking for itself, which is probably why the Nation banned it under the 4th Cultural Protection Act. It describes a hidden "song" that connects everyone, which a few people can hear and fewer still can conduct, "gifted individuals capable of manipulating the essence of the world around them". It goes on: "Many believe that the Grand Empress is such a being. Her immense will bent humanity into the Empire of Eusan and lifted us to the stars. It was her power that imbued life into the first of the machine-servants that now carry the weight of the Empire on their carbon-steel backs." (Signalis, "Song of the Gods")
That last line is the game's only direct account of where Replikas came from. If it's true, the Nation's labour force and police are an imperial invention it inherited. (Signalis)
What happened to the Grand Empress?#
In Nowhere, the flesh maze below the mines of Leng, Elster finds a shrine to an Empress, with a haloed figure and a decayed body she must place rings on. The note that solves it, "The Empress' Hand", reads like a short life: crowned on the first day, nothing done on the longest day, wed on the next, and "on the last day she took her life". The game doesn't say whether this shrine is the Grand Empress, but there is no other empress in the story, and most players assume it is. (Signalis, "The Empress' Hand")
The war with the Nation#
The Nation broke away from the Empire, and the war goes on. A classified paper in Rotfront asks whether the Nation could ever have freed itself "from the stranglehold of the Empire without the support of Replikas", and warns that leaning on bioresonance risks taking it back to where it was under imperial rule. The S-23 welcome leaflet describes the enemy as the remnants of the Empire. A Rotfront headline blames an imperial blockade for mass starvation, and an AEON email warns of an imperial spy. The Falke poster shows the Nation's flag over the Empire's symbol. (Signalis)
Imperial worlds in the Dream Diary#
The Dream Diary, found in Rotfront, gives rare glimpses of imperial space. The dreamer is an imperial farmer swallowed by a sandstorm in the red deserts of Kitezh, and later walks "through the floating imperial palace" on Buyan when "a burning eye in the sky above the clouds of Buyan" burns them to ashes. The same burning eye turns up elsewhere as the red eye. (Signalis, "Dream Diary")
What is uncertain#
The game never shows the revolution, never names who rules the Empire now, and never says how much of the Nation's propaganda about it is true. Theories that the Empire knew about The King in Yellow, or that the flesh below Leng is an imperial relic, are fan readings built on shared symbols, not anything the game states. The Signalis timeline sets out what can be ordered. (Signalis)
Frequently asked questions
- What is the Empire in Signalis?
- The Empire of Eusan is the state that ruled humanity before the Eusan Nation's revolution. It is still at war with the Nation, which treats it as the remnants of a defeated power.
- Who is the Grand Empress in Signalis?
- The founder of the Empire. A banned book says her will "bent humanity into the Empire of Eusan" and that her power gave life to the first Replikas. A shrine in Nowhere and a note called "The Empress' Hand" suggest she later took her own life, but the game never states it plainly.
- Did the Empire create the Replikas?
- According to "Song of the Gods", yes: it credits the Grand Empress's power with giving life to the first machine-servants. The Nation's own documents say it couldn't have won its freedom without Replikas.

The Eusan Nation: the Totalitarian State of Signalis
The Eusan Nation is the revolutionary state that rules most of the Signalis solar system, runs on Replika labour and bioresonance, and is at war with the Empire it broke away from. Here is what the game's posters, files and banned books tell us about it.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.
Falke: the Commander Who Looked Beyond the Red Gate
Falke is the FKLR unit who commanded the Protektors of S-23 Sierpinski and the final boss of Signalis. She crossed the red gate in the mines, came back sick, and was slowly overwritten by Elster's memories until she could no longer tell the two of them apart.
Leng: the Frozen Frontier Planet of Signalis
Leng is the cold planet at the edge of the solar system where S-23 Sierpinski stands and where Elster wakes beside the crashed Penrose-512. Under its mines lies a sea of flesh, and its name points straight at Lovecraft.
Replika: the Artificial People of Signalis Explained
Replikas are the biomechanical people the Eusan Nation builds by copying the minds of chosen humans. They do its labour, its policing and its commanding. Here is how they are made, what each model does, and why they fall apart.
The King in Yellow in Signalis: the Book and Its Role
The King in Yellow is the sealed yellow book Elster picks up at the start of Signalis and again at the very end. It is a banned book in the Eusan Nation, a key item, and a direct borrowing from Robert W. Chambers' 1895 horror stories.
Mentioned in8 entries
AEON in Signalis: the Organisation That Runs S-23 Sierpinski
AEON is the Eusan Nation body that relocates workers, runs facilities like S-23 Sierpinski and stands behind the Protektors. The game never explains it in one place, so this page sticks to what its documents actually say.
Bioresonance in Signalis: the Power Behind Replikas, Falke and Kolibri
Bioresonance is the mind's ability to change the physical world, and in Signalis it runs everything from Replika production to the Falke commanders. Here is what the game's documents actually say about it, and where the popular theories about Ariane begin.
Nowhere: the Flesh Maze Below Leng in Signalis
Nowhere is the maze of flesh, cages and shrines that Elster reaches at the bottom of the mines under S-23 Sierpinski. It holds the seals of The King in Yellow, Alina's last diary and the note called The Dreamer, and it leads to the red gate.
Rotfront: Ariane's Home Moon in Signalis
Rotfront is the ice moon where Ariane Yeong, Isa and Erika grew up, and the setting of the last chapter of Signalis. Elster walks through a dark, dreamlike copy of its Sektor C, full of Ariane's past.
Signalis Characters: Every Replika and Human Explained
Who everyone is in Signalis, from Elster and Ariane Yeong to Falke, Adler, Isa Itou and the Replikas of S-23 Sierpinski. What the game says about each, how they fit the story, and where fan theories take over.
Signalis Story Explained: Elster, Ariane and the Promise
The whole Signalis story in order, from Elster waking on the crashed Penrose-512 to the loop at S-23 Sierpinski, Rotfront and the cryo pod. What the game actually states, what is real, and the main readings of what it all means.
Signalis Timeline: the Eusan Nation, the Penrose Program and Leng
Every event in Signalis put in order, from the Grand Empress and the revolution that founded the Eusan Nation to the war on Vineta, Ariane Yeong's life on Rotfront, the Penrose-512 and the loop at S-23 Sierpinski. Where the game only implies the order, this page says so.
