Replika: the Artificial People of Signalis Explained
Replikas are the biomechanical people the Eusan Nation builds by copying the minds of chosen humans. They do its labour, its policing and its commanding. Here is how they are made, what each model does, and why they fall apart.
A Replika is a manufactured, biomechanical person built by the Eusan Nation on a copy of a real human's mind. Replikas do almost everything in Signalis: they clean, repair, mine, guard, administer and command. Elster, the character you play, is one. Humans are called Gestalts, and every Replika model began as one carefully chosen Gestalt. (Signalis)
How are Replikas made?#
The Stolen Document, marked for Replika technicians only, describes the process. AEON selects "exemplary citizens of the nation" who are "permanently cryogenically preserved in Neural Archives, each becoming a neural pattern for a new Replika Model". To keep the Replika an "incorruptible ideal", the original Gestalt is "erased from records and public memory". When technicians copy the pattern into a new unit, most episodic memories are "altered and suppressed", so the Replika keeps the donor's skills and personality but can't normally recall the donor's life. (Signalis, "Stolen Document")
Another classified paper admits how little anyone understands this: "How does Synchronicity happen? Why is the duplicate imperfect? What happens to preexisting patterns in the receiving brain?" (Signalis, "Bioresonance Technology and its Limitations")
Patterns can be lost. The LSTR overview says the original Elster pattern disappeared with the destruction of the central Neural Archive on Vineta, so new units are built from a decommissioned unit from the Penrose Program. (Signalis, "Replika Overview: LSTR")
Replika models in Signalis#
These are the models the game documents. Eule (EULR) is a cheap all-purpose unit for domestic, nursing and office work, whose pattern was a ballet dancer. Ara (ARAR) is a cheap repair and construction worker. Star (STAR) is a Protektor security guard, Storch (STCR) a guard controller, Kolibri (KLBR) a bioresonant specialist, Adler (ADLR) a facility administrator, and Falke (FKLR) the bioresonant commander. Elster (LSTR) is a technician and combat engineer, and Mynah (MNHR) an armoured industrial unit. The named units of each model are covered in Signalis characters. (Signalis)
Each overview also gives a generation number. Ara is Generation 2, Mynah 3, Eule and Star 4, Elster, Storch and Adler 5, and Kolibri and Falke 6. (Signalis)
Persona degradation and fetish objects#
Replikas don't stay stable on their own. The Known Issues files, marked for commanders only, list what each model needs. Eules need music and mirrors. Aras need plants. Storches need baths or showers. Kolibris need a library. Adlers need new fetish objects regularly because they bore easily. Mynahs can have stuffed animals, though not cats. (Signalis, "Replika Known Issues, Part 1"; Signalis, "Replika Known Issues, Part 2"; Signalis, "Replika Known Issues, Part 3"; Signalis, "Replika Known Issues, Part 4")
The Stolen Document explains the risk. Eventually any unit will meet something that makes Gestalt memories resurface, and degraded units lose their advantages over human workers. Command units use bioresonance to watch for it, and the recommendation is to "swiftly decommission and replace units before their productivity decrease or they begin to show clear signs of individuality". (Signalis, "Stolen Document")
Where did Replikas come from?#
The Nation's documents credit Replikas with its freedom from the Empire. But "Song of the Gods", a book the Nation bans, says the first Replikas were the Empire's: the Grand Empress's power "imbued life into the first of the machine-servants that now carry the weight of the Empire on their carbon-steel backs". (Signalis, "Song of the Gods")
Replikas and the story#
Signalis keeps asking how much of the original person survives the copy. Elster's love for Ariane, Adler's dream of a past life, and Falke's absorption of Elster's memories all play on the idea that Replika minds are copies that can bleed into each other. The game leaves that question open. (Signalis)
Frequently asked questions
- What is a Replika in Signalis?
- A Replika is a biomechanical artificial person whose mind is copied, through bioresonance, from a chosen human "Gestalt". Each model is built for a role, from cleaning and repair to command, and named after a bird in German.
- What is the difference between a Gestalt and a Replika?
- Gestalts are natural-born humans. Replikas are manufactured units built on a copy of one Gestalt's neural pattern, with most of that person's specific memories suppressed.
- What is persona degradation in Signalis?
- The Nation's term for a Replika's personality breaking down, often as memories of its original Gestalt resurface. Each model's Known Issues file lists comforts, called fetish objects, and habits that keep it stable.
- Why are Replikas named after birds?
- Each model has a German bird nickname that fits its official abbreviation: Elster (magpie), Falke (falcon), Adler (eagle), Kolibri (hummingbird), Storch (stork), Eule (owl), Ara (macaw), Star (starling) and Mynah.

Bioresonance in Signalis: the Power Behind Replikas, Falke and Kolibri
Bioresonance is the mind's ability to change the physical world, and in Signalis it runs everything from Replika production to the Falke commanders. Here is what the game's documents actually say about it, and where the popular theories about Ariane begin.
The Penrose Program: One Pilot, One Replika and No Way Home
The Penrose Program was the Eusan Nation's deep-space scouting mission, sending one human pilot and one Replika per ship past the edge of the solar system. Its briefings, found aboard the Penrose-512, show a mission that expected its crews to die.
Adler: the Administrator Who Remembers the Loop
Adler is the ADLR administrator of S-23 Sierpinski, the Replika who throws Elster down a lift shaft and later blocks her at the red gate. His diaries show a bored bureaucrat slowly realising that the same days keep repeating, and that Elster has been here before.
Ariane Yeong: the Pilot at the Heart of Signalis
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512 and the person Elster has been searching for all along. Her notes, her school records and her room in Rotfront tell the story of a lonely art-loving girl who ran away to space and fell in love with her Replika.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.
Falke: the Commander Who Looked Beyond the Red Gate
Falke is the FKLR unit who commanded the Protektors of S-23 Sierpinski and the final boss of Signalis. She crossed the red gate in the mines, came back sick, and was slowly overwritten by Elster's memories until she could no longer tell the two of them apart.

AEON in Signalis: the Organisation That Runs S-23 Sierpinski
AEON is the Eusan Nation body that relocates workers, runs facilities like S-23 Sierpinski and stands behind the Protektors. The game never explains it in one place, so this page sticks to what its documents actually say.
Alina Seo: the Woman in Elster's Photo in Signalis
Alina Seo is the Gestalt worker Elster believes she is searching for during the first half of Signalis. Her four diary entries follow S-23 Sierpinski as it falls, and end with her remembering a life that isn't hers.

Kolibri: the Psychic Hive-Mind Replikas of Signalis
Kolibri units are small, highly bioresonant Replikas who serve as adjutants to a Falke commander and share their thoughts as a cadre. At S-23 Sierpinski almost all of them have gone wrong, and the one who hasn't is hiding alone in the library.
Mynah: the Armoured Mining Replikas and the First Boss of Signalis
Mynah units are the huge, diving-suit-like MNHR Replikas built for mining and hazardous work. A corrupted Mynah is the first boss Elster faces at S-23 Sierpinski, and a dying one in the mines gives one of the game's gentlest conversations.
S-23 Sierpinski: the AEON Labour Facility on Leng
S-23 Sierpinski is the AEON re-education and mining facility on Leng where most of Signalis takes place. By the time Elster arrives its workers are dead, its Replikas have turned, and the same days seem to be repeating.
