Ariane Yeong: the Pilot at the Heart of Signalis
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512 and the person Elster has been searching for all along. Her notes, her school records and her room in Rotfront tell the story of a lonely art-loving girl who ran away to space and fell in love with her Replika.
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512, the scout ship she crewed with the Replika Elster, and the person Elster spends the whole of Signalis trying to reach. She grew up on Rotfront, a moon of the Eusan Nation, and signed up for the Penrose Program to get away from it. In the game's terms she is a Gestalt, the Nation's word for a natural-born human. (Signalis)
Who is Ariane Yeong?#
Most of what we know comes from documents Elster finds in a dreamlike version of Rotfront late in the game. A letter addressed to Radio Officer Yeong at Station 6 belongs to her mother, and Elster can visit that lonely radio station in a first-person sequence. In Blockwart C, an email from the Yeong photo shop to the local Blockwart says the owner's niece has the only spare key "but she's still at the hospital right now". (Signalis)
School went badly. In a memory seen through the eyes of her classmate Isa Itou, Ariane is beaten by other students in the school library. Her teacher's evaluation, found in a hospital room, disapproves of her interest in art. Her medical record lists insomnia, bruising and premature greying, and her doctor's notes have been removed. (Signalis)
Why did Ariane join the Penrose Program?#
Her cycle 225 note is blunt. She was sick of Rotfront, of school, of the photo shop, "of the fake smiles and the whispering behind people's backs". She remembers seeing a photograph of a soldier who looked like her and wondering whether she could have been like her. "Here," she writes, "I am finally free." (Signalis)
She had been told to keep her distance from her Replika. The Penrose pilots' guide to LSTR units says not to befriend the Elster unit, not to show it films or play it music, and not to give it photographs of soldiers. Ariane's notes show she ignored all of it. (Signalis, "Replika Known Issues, Penrose Program")
Ariane and Elster#
By cycle 648 Ariane notices Elster is "different from replikas I knew back home" and feels they have run away from the world together. She hears a Vinetan accent like her old friends Isa and Erika's, and quietly slows the ship's clock so each cycle lasts about as long as a day on Vineta, wondering whether Elster will notice. She paints, complains about the ship's films, and laughs with Elster about running out of ochre paint. (Signalis)
The good years didn't last. Her notes from cycles 1840 and 2503 describe feeling trapped, brain fog, hair loss and breathlessness. At cycle 3000 the program told the crew no world had been found and that the reactor shielding would fail; it suggested the pilot ask the Replika to spare her a slow death, or take permanent rest in the cryo pod. The game shows Ariane and Elster marking that day with a dance. (Signalis; Signalis, "Penrose Phase 3")
Later notes are hard to read. She loses teeth, can't sleep, and writes "please, just make it stop". The last note, written in smeared, coded text that players date to cycle 262144, says she can no longer tell whether she is awake or asleep and that everything hurts. (Signalis)
How Ariane's story ends#
Elster reaches Ariane in the cryo pod at the end of the game, and the ending decides what happens next. In the Memory ending Ariane doesn't recognise her, and Elster stays at her side until she herself dies. In the Promise ending Ariane remembers, asks Elster to kill her, and Elster does before dying next to her. In the Artifact ending the last image is the two of them dancing in Ariane's quarters on the wreck. How she fits the whole plot is covered in Signalis story explained. (Signalis)
What is stated and what is theory#
The game states that Ariane is still alive in the cryo pod at the end. It never states outright that she is bioresonant, or that she caused what happened at S-23 Sierpinski. The leading reading is that she is bioresonant and that her power, amplified as she lies dying in the pod, is dreaming the world Elster moves through, which would explain why Alina Seo's last diary says her hair is turning white and that she remembers "a different name, and a different life". Another popular reading ties her to The King in Yellow: her cycle 1294 note recalls a dream of her mother taking notes from the radio with a book on her lap, the same book with a yellow hooded figure on its cover that Ariane once saw in the Itou bookshop window before the Protektors confiscated it. (Signalis)
A dream in Adler's diary describes a uniformed tester showing "a young woman, her hair white as snow" cards with astronomical symbols. Many players take this as Ariane being tested for bioresonance, but she isn't named. (Signalis, "Adler's Diary")
Frequently asked questions
- Who is Ariane Yeong in Signalis?
- Ariane Yeong is a Gestalt (human) from Rotfront who joined the Penrose Program and flew the scout ship Penrose-512 with the Replika Elster. She is the person Elster is really looking for, and the game's endings all turn on her.
- Is Ariane dead in Signalis?
- At the end of the game she is alive in the Penrose-512's cryo pod, dying of what her notes describe as radiation sickness. In the Promise ending Elster kills her at her request; in the Memory ending she outlives Elster.
- Is Ariane bioresonant?
- The game never says so outright. Her medical record lists insomnia, bruising and premature greying, and her doctor's notes have been removed. The most common reading is that she is bioresonant and that her power shapes the loop at S-23, but that is a reading, not something the game states.
- Where is Ariane at the end of Signalis?
- In the cryo pod of the crashed Penrose-512. Elster reaches her there after defeating Falke, and the ending you get decides whether Ariane remembers her.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.

What Happened to Ariane?
Ariane Yeong is still alive at the end of Signalis, lying in the cryo pod of the wrecked Penrose-512, sick from radiation and in pain. What happens next depends on your ending. Here is what the game shows and what is only theory.
The Penrose Program: One Pilot, One Replika and No Way Home
The Penrose Program was the Eusan Nation's deep-space scouting mission, sending one human pilot and one Replika per ship past the edge of the solar system. Its briefings, found aboard the Penrose-512, show a mission that expected its crews to die.
Replika: the Artificial People of Signalis Explained
Replikas are the biomechanical people the Eusan Nation builds by copying the minds of chosen humans. They do its labour, its policing and its commanding. Here is how they are made, what each model does, and why they fall apart.
Rotfront: Ariane's Home Moon in Signalis
Rotfront is the ice moon where Ariane Yeong, Isa and Erika grew up, and the setting of the last chapter of Signalis. Elster walks through a dark, dreamlike copy of its Sektor C, full of Ariane's past.
S-23 Sierpinski: the AEON Labour Facility on Leng
S-23 Sierpinski is the AEON re-education and mining facility on Leng where most of Signalis takes place. By the time Elster arrives its workers are dead, its Replikas have turned, and the same days seem to be repeating.

Adler: the Administrator Who Remembers the Loop
Adler is the ADLR administrator of S-23 Sierpinski, the Replika who throws Elster down a lift shaft and later blocks her at the red gate. His diaries show a bored bureaucrat slowly realising that the same days keep repeating, and that Elster has been here before.
Alina Seo: the Woman in Elster's Photo in Signalis
Alina Seo is the Gestalt worker Elster believes she is searching for during the first half of Signalis. Her four diary entries follow S-23 Sierpinski as it falls, and end with her remembering a life that isn't hers.
All Signalis Endings Explained: Promise, Memory, Leave and the Secret Ending
Signalis has a false ending, three main endings called Leave, Memory and Promise, and a secret fourth ending the results screen calls Artifact. What happens in each, how the game picks one, how to reach the secret ending, and what each one means.
Bioresonance in Signalis: the Power Behind Replikas, Falke and Kolibri
Bioresonance is the mind's ability to change the physical world, and in Signalis it runs everything from Replika production to the Falke commanders. Here is what the game's documents actually say about it, and where the popular theories about Ariane begin.

Falke: the Commander Who Looked Beyond the Red Gate
Falke is the FKLR unit who commanded the Protektors of S-23 Sierpinski and the final boss of Signalis. She crossed the red gate in the mines, came back sick, and was slowly overwritten by Elster's memories until she could no longer tell the two of them apart.
Isa Itou: the Girl Searching for Her Sister in Signalis
Isa Itou is the Gestalt Elster keeps running into at S-23 Sierpinski, a girl from Rotfront looking for her lost twin, Erika. She was Ariane's school friend, and her story ends in her family's bookshop.
Leng: the Frozen Frontier Planet of Signalis
Leng is the cold planet at the edge of the solar system where S-23 Sierpinski stands and where Elster wakes beside the crashed Penrose-512. Under its mines lies a sea of flesh, and its name points straight at Lovecraft.
Nowhere: the Flesh Maze Below Leng in Signalis
Nowhere is the maze of flesh, cages and shrines that Elster reaches at the bottom of the mines under S-23 Sierpinski. It holds the seals of The King in Yellow, Alina's last diary and the note called The Dreamer, and it leads to the red gate.
