What Happened to Ariane?
Ariane Yeong is still alive at the end of Signalis, lying in the cryo pod of the wrecked Penrose-512, sick from radiation and in pain. What happens next depends on your ending. Here is what the game shows and what is only theory.
Ariane Yeong is still alive when Signalis ends. The Penrose-512, the scout ship she flew with her Replika Elster, has crashed, its failing reactor has poisoned her for years, and she lies in its cryo pod sick and in pain. Elster reaches her there at last, and the ending you get decides what happens next: Elster keeps their promise and kills her, or Ariane doesn't recognise her and lives on. (Signalis)
How she got there#
Ariane grew up on Rotfront, a moon of the Eusan Nation. Documents Elster finds late in the game show a quiet girl who loved painting, was beaten by other students at school, and had a medical record listing insomnia, bruising and premature greying, with the doctor's notes removed. Her early Penrose notes say she was sick of Rotfront and everyone in it, and that out in space she finally felt free. (Signalis)
She was told to keep her distance from her Replika. The pilots' guide to the LSTR model warns against befriending the Elster unit, showing it films or playing it music. Ariane ignored all of it. Her notes describe painting with Elster, slowing the ship's clock so a cycle lasted about a Vinetan day, and falling in love. The Penrose Program page explains the mission she signed up for. (Signalis)
The slow poisoning#
The good years ended. Her notes from later cycles describe feeling trapped, brain fog, hair loss and breathlessness. At cycle 3000 the program told the crew that no habitable world had been found and that the reactor shielding would fail. It suggested the pilot ask the Replika to spare her a slow death, or go into permanent rest in the cryo pod. The game shows Ariane and Elster marking that day with a dance. (Signalis)
The last notes are hard to read. She loses teeth, can't sleep and begs for it to stop. The final one, in smeared coded text, says she can no longer tell if she is awake or asleep and that everything hurts. That is the state Elster finds her in. (Signalis)
What happens in each ending#
Every ending of Signalis ends at the Penrose-512. The endings explained page covers how the game picks one. (Signalis)
- Leave. Elster reaches the ship but can't bring herself to go in. She asks Ariane's forgiveness, walks out under a blue sky and dies. Ariane is left alone in the pod. (Signalis)
- Memory. Elster wakes Ariane, but Ariane doesn't know her and has no memory of the promise. Elster asks to stay with her a little longer and dies against the pod, with Ariane's hand on her head. Ariane is still alive at the end. (Signalis)
- Promise. Ariane remembers. She reminds Elster that she promised and says it is time to end this. Elster strangles her, says she is sorry, and dies beside the pod after trying and failing to leave. (Signalis)
- Artifact. On a second playthrough, a hidden route ends with Elster laying white lilies at a ritual site and dying among other Elster units. The last scene shows Elster and Ariane dancing in Ariane's quarters on the wreck, with a huge red eye hanging above it. (Signalis)
The ending depends on how you played, and the game doesn't mark any one of them as Ariane's true fate. (Signalis)
What the game doesn't say#
Most of the big questions about Ariane are answered only by theory, and it's worth keeping that line clear. (Signalis)
The leading reading is that Ariane is bioresonant, with psychic powers like those the Nation tests for, and that as she lies dying in the pod her mind is dreaming the world Elster moves through, including the looping events at S-23 Sierpinski. Supporters point to her removed medical notes, to a dream in Adler's diary about a white-haired young woman being tested with symbol cards, and to Alina's diary saying her own hair is turning white. The game never confirms any of it. (Signalis)
Another popular reading ties Ariane to The King in Yellow, a book she saw in a bookshop window as a child and later dreamed of, lying in her mother's lap while her mother took notes from the radio. Whether the book did something to her, or she to the world, is never spelled out. (Signalis)
Our reading is that the endings are less about whether Ariane lives than about whether she is free. Memory leaves her alive and still suffering, which is exactly what the promise was meant to prevent, and Promise lets her go. The game lets you decide which of those is the kinder fate. For her full story, see Ariane Yeong, and for the plot as a whole, Signalis story explained. (Signalis)
Frequently asked questions
- Is Ariane dead in Signalis?
- Not when Elster finds her. She is alive in the Penrose-512's cryo pod at the end of the game. In the Promise ending Elster kills her at her request; in the Memory ending she is still alive when Elster dies.
- What made Ariane sick?
- The Penrose-512's reactor shielding failing over a very long mission. Her notes describe hair loss, lost teeth, brain fog and pain, and the program warned the crew the shielding would fail.
- What was the promise between Ariane and Elster?
- The game implies Elster promised to end Ariane's suffering. The Penrose Program's last message told pilots to ask their Replika to spare them a slow death, and in the Promise ending Ariane reminds Elster that she promised.
- Is Ariane dreaming the world of Signalis?
- That is the most popular theory, not something the game states. It rests on hints that she is bioresonant, such as the removed doctor's notes in her medical record.

Adler: the Administrator Who Remembers the Loop
Adler is the ADLR administrator of S-23 Sierpinski, the Replika who throws Elster down a lift shaft and later blocks her at the red gate. His diaries show a bored bureaucrat slowly realising that the same days keep repeating, and that Elster has been here before.
Alina Seo: the Woman in Elster's Photo in Signalis
Alina Seo is the Gestalt worker Elster believes she is searching for during the first half of Signalis. Her four diary entries follow S-23 Sierpinski as it falls, and end with her remembering a life that isn't hers.
Ariane Yeong: the Pilot at the Heart of Signalis
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512 and the person Elster has been searching for all along. Her notes, her school records and her room in Rotfront tell the story of a lonely art-loving girl who ran away to space and fell in love with her Replika.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.
All Signalis Endings Explained: Promise, Memory, Leave and the Secret Ending
Signalis has a false ending, three main endings called Leave, Memory and Promise, and a secret fourth ending the results screen calls Artifact. What happens in each, how the game picks one, how to reach the secret ending, and what each one means.
