The Eusan Nation: the Totalitarian State of Signalis
The Eusan Nation is the revolutionary state that rules most of the Signalis solar system, runs on Replika labour and bioresonance, and is at war with the Empire it broke away from. Here is what the game's posters, files and banned books tell us about it.
The Eusan Nation is the state that rules most of the world of Signalis, a one-party regime that rose up against the Empire and is still fighting it. Every location in the game, from the labour facility S-23 Sierpinski on Leng to the moon of Rotfront, sits inside its borders. It is held together by propaganda, surveillance and the Replikas that do its work and police its people. (Signalis)
Where did the Eusan Nation come from?#
The Nation broke away from the Empire. A classified document found in Rotfront asks: "Would we ever have been able to free ourselves from the stranglehold of the Empire without the support of Replikas?" A welcome leaflet at S-23 promises new workers they will help the war effort against what is left of the Empire. The Falke overview names the Nation's leaders as "the Great Revolutionary and her Daughter". (Signalis, "Bioresonance Technology and its Limitations"; Signalis, "Welcome to S-23 Sierpinski"; Signalis, "Replika Overview: FKLR")
The war is not over. Posters in Rotfront call for victory over the Empire, and a newspaper headline in the same district reads "Millions starve as Imperial Blockade continues". An email to Rotfront's block warden warns of an imperial spy in the area and says a Protektor special operations unit has been sent from AEON headquarters on Heimat. (Signalis)
How the Nation runs#
AEON is the arm of the state players see most. It relocates workers to S-23 Sierpinski ("the perfect place for a new beginning", says the leaflet), where they mine and process ore and make munitions while being re-educated. It runs the Protektor security forces: STAR guards, Storch controllers, Kolibri bioresonant specialists, an Adler administrator and a Falke commander at the top of each facility. In Rotfront, even the block warden of Sektor C is a Kolibri, and her inbox warns her that a seasonal review will decide whether she is "marked for replacement". (Signalis)
Replikas themselves are made from people. The Stolen Document explains that AEON chooses "exemplary citizens", preserves them cryogenically in Neural Archives as templates for new models, and erases the original Gestalt "from records and public memory" so the Replika can stand as an incorruptible ideal. Units that start showing "clear signs of individuality" are to be decommissioned and replaced, and "when ammunition is rationed, alternative ways of decommissioning may be deployed". (Signalis, "Stolen Document")
Censorship and control#
Books are policed. "Song of the Gods", a text praising the Empress, carries a notice that owning or distributing it is punishable under the 4th Cultural Protection Act. Ariane remembers The King in Yellow vanishing from the Itou family's shop window after the Protektors confiscated it. Her teacher's evaluation frowns on her interest in art. (Signalis)
The Nation's dependence on bioresonance worries at least one of its own. The classified document in Rotfront says Klimaforming and induced gravity would be impossible without it, that progress in electronics has "stagnated for nearly a century", and warns: "It may not be long before we're back where we were under the Empire." (Signalis, "Bioresonance Technology and its Limitations")
The Penrose Program as propaganda#
The Penrose Program sent single pilots and their Replikas past the edge of the system. Its final briefing tells crews who have found nothing to make peace with death and to remember they "will die having served your Nation by partaking in a glorious demonstration of our power". Many players read that line as the real purpose of the program. (Signalis, "Penrose Phase 3")
What the game doesn't explain#
Signalis never shows the Great Revolutionary or the revolution itself, never fully explains the war on Vineta, the ocean world Elster's Gestalt came from, and never confirms how the war is going beyond what its own censored newspapers say. Comparisons with East Germany come from players and critics, drawn from the German names and the look of the posters and uniforms; the game itself makes no such claim. For what the game does let us put in order, see the Signalis timeline. (Signalis)
Frequently asked questions

AEON in Signalis: the Organisation That Runs S-23 Sierpinski
AEON is the Eusan Nation body that relocates workers, runs facilities like S-23 Sierpinski and stands behind the Protektors. The game never explains it in one place, so this page sticks to what its documents actually say.
The Eusan Empire: the Fallen Empire of Signalis
The Empire of Eusan is the older power the Nation rebelled against, founded by a Grand Empress whose bioresonance is said to have united humanity and given life to the first Replikas. You never visit it in Signalis, but banned books, dreams and posters sketch it in.
Adler: the Administrator Who Remembers the Loop
Adler is the ADLR administrator of S-23 Sierpinski, the Replika who throws Elster down a lift shaft and later blocks her at the red gate. His diaries show a bored bureaucrat slowly realising that the same days keep repeating, and that Elster has been here before.
Ariane Yeong: the Pilot at the Heart of Signalis
Ariane Yeong is the human pilot of the Penrose-512 and the person Elster has been searching for all along. Her notes, her school records and her room in Rotfront tell the story of a lonely art-loving girl who ran away to space and fell in love with her Replika.

Elster: the Replika Who Crossed Leng to Keep a Promise
Elster, unit LSTR-512, is the Replika you play in Signalis. She wakes on a crashed ship, searches a dying labour facility for someone she can't quite remember, and slowly works out that the person she lost is Ariane Yeong, the pilot she served with on the Penrose-512.
Falke: the Commander Who Looked Beyond the Red Gate
Falke is the FKLR unit who commanded the Protektors of S-23 Sierpinski and the final boss of Signalis. She crossed the red gate in the mines, came back sick, and was slowly overwritten by Elster's memories until she could no longer tell the two of them apart.

Bioresonance in Signalis: the Power Behind Replikas, Falke and Kolibri
Bioresonance is the mind's ability to change the physical world, and in Signalis it runs everything from Replika production to the Falke commanders. Here is what the game's documents actually say about it, and where the popular theories about Ariane begin.
Kolibri: the Psychic Hive-Mind Replikas of Signalis
Kolibri units are small, highly bioresonant Replikas who serve as adjutants to a Falke commander and share their thoughts as a cadre. At S-23 Sierpinski almost all of them have gone wrong, and the one who hasn't is hiding alone in the library.
Leng: the Frozen Frontier Planet of Signalis
Leng is the cold planet at the edge of the solar system where S-23 Sierpinski stands and where Elster wakes beside the crashed Penrose-512. Under its mines lies a sea of flesh, and its name points straight at Lovecraft.
Mynah: the Armoured Mining Replikas and the First Boss of Signalis
Mynah units are the huge, diving-suit-like MNHR Replikas built for mining and hazardous work. A corrupted Mynah is the first boss Elster faces at S-23 Sierpinski, and a dying one in the mines gives one of the game's gentlest conversations.
Replika: the Artificial People of Signalis Explained
Replikas are the biomechanical people the Eusan Nation builds by copying the minds of chosen humans. They do its labour, its policing and its commanding. Here is how they are made, what each model does, and why they fall apart.
Rotfront: Ariane's Home Moon in Signalis
Rotfront is the ice moon where Ariane Yeong, Isa and Erika grew up, and the setting of the last chapter of Signalis. Elster walks through a dark, dreamlike copy of its Sektor C, full of Ariane's past.
