By Joe Garratt

Kanan Jarrus, born Caleb Dume, was a Force-sensitive human male Jedi Knight who survived Order 66 during the Clone Wars. Living on thanks to the sacrifice of his Master, Depa Billaba, on Kaller, he went into hiding and forsook the Jedi ways for a time, trading his blue-bladed lightsaber for a blaster. After working with the Twi'lek rebel operative Hera Syndulla during the Gorse Conflict, he joined her nascent rebel cell.

Caleb Dume and the Jedi Order#

Born in 33 BBY during the waning years of the Galactic Republic, Caleb Dume was brought into the Jedi Order at a very young age and raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, never knowing his parents. As a youngling he met Jedi Master Luminara Unduli, whom he remembered as brave, compassionate, and disciplined, and often heard Grand Master Yoda repeat the maxim "Do, or do not. There is no try." He constructed his own lightsaber with the help of the droid Huyang and trained against fellow initiates before being taken as the Padawan of Jedi Master Depa Billaba.

Survivor of Order 66#

When the Clone Wars ended and the clones turned on the Jedi under Order 66, Depa Billaba gave her life on Kaller to allow her young Padawan to escape. Living on the run, Dume met the smuggler Janus Kasmir, who taught him how to survive as a fugitive. Adopting the name Kanan Jarrus, he set aside the Jedi ways for years, hiding his lightsaber and carrying a blaster instead.

The Spectres and Ezra#

After working with the rebel operative Hera Syndulla during the Gorse Conflict, Jarrus joined her rebel cell. As her second-in-command, the two developed a romantic relationship. When the Force-sensitive teenager Ezra Bridger joined the crew, Jarrus became his mentor despite still being a Padawan himself. After defeating the Grand Inquisitor in combat, Jarrus and his fellow rebels learned they were part of a larger rebellion and joined Phoenix Cell.

Blinded on Malachor and the Bendu#

During a mission to the ancient Sith world of Malachor, Jarrus was blinded by the former Sith Lord Maul. After months of retreat and self-doubt, he restored his connection to the Force and repaired his frayed relationship with Bridger with the help of a mysterious being called the Bendu, who taught him to see through the Force. Reinvigorated, he and his fellow rebels continued to fight adversaries including Grand Admiral Thrawn and Maul. He also taught the Mandalorian rebel Sabine Wren to wield the Darksaber and helped rally the Mandalorians to the rebel cause.

Death on Lothal and legacy#

Jarrus met his death on Lothal in 1 BBY during the rescue of Hera Syndulla, after Governor Arihnda Pryce ordered a walker to fire on the fuel pod the rebels were standing on. He held back the explosion long enough for his companions to escape, sacrificing himself so they might live. Following his death he became part of the Cosmic Force, manifesting as a great loth-wolf named Dume that appeared to Bridger several times. Hera later gave birth to their son, whom she named Jacen Syndulla. More than three decades after his death, the voices of Jarrus and many other Jedi were heard by the young aspirant Rey, encouraging her in her final stand against the returned Emperor.
