Sabine Wren

the Mandalorian artist of the rebellion

Sabine Wren was a Mandalorian warrior, artist, and revolutionary whose work inspired the symbol of the Rebel Alliance. A wielder of the Darksaber and later a Jedi apprentice, she fought to free both Mandalore and the wider galaxy.

By Joe Garratt

Sabine Wren was a Force-sensitive human female Mandalorian warrior and revolutionary leader during the Galactic Civil War against the Galactic Empire, and later a Jedi during the early years of the New Republic. Her artistry during the early rebellion inspired the symbol of the Rebel Alliance, and her claim over the ancient Mandalorian weapon known as the Darksaber made her a primary symbol to Clan Wren and to the hope of freeing her people's homeworld of Mandalore.

Cadet of the Empire#

Born in 21 BBY, Sabine Wren was raised in part on Mandalore and in part at Clan Wren's ancestral home of Krownest, and forged her distinctive armor with her family. After the Clone Wars, the Empire established a presence on Mandalore and opened an Imperial Academy, which Wren attended as a cadet. As a youth she believed in the Empire and followed its orders, even studying the tactics of the Twi'lek resistance leader Cham Syndulla and the Mandalorian Protector Fenn Rau. She built weapons she believed would be used for peace, only to see them turned against her own people. Wracked with guilt, she left Mandalore and was branded a traitor both by the Empire and by her mother, Ursa Wren, the leader of the clan. Her defection brought serious consequences for her family: her father became a hostage of Viceroy Gar Saxon, and her brother Tristan was forced to serve in Saxon's Imperial Super Commandos.

The Spectres#

After leaving Mandalore, Wren worked as a bounty hunter alongside her friend Ketsu Onyo before being recruited by Captain Hera Syndulla and the Jedi Kanan Jarrus into their rebel crew aboard the starship Ghost. Taking the codename Spectre 5, she became the crew's weapons and explosives expert and its resident artist, decorating the Ghost and tagging Imperial targets with her work. On one early mission she spray-painted a violet starbird onto a TIE fighter wing and escaped a squad of stormtroopers with a paint bomb, earning the nickname "The Artist" among the local Imperials. Over countless raids, rescues, and sabotage runs across the Lothal sector, Wren came to regard the Spectres as her family.

The larger rebellion#

As Syndulla's cell joined the wider rebel movement, Wren's exploits multiplied. She helped the Imperial cadets Wedge Antilles and Derek Klivian defect from Skystrike Academy, aided in the recovery of Y-wing bombers from Reklam Station, and tested the prototype starfighter known as the Blade Wing alongside her crewmates. Her art took on a life of its own: a violet starbird she painted became the inspiration for the symbol of the Rebel Alliance. Her growing campaign of disruption eventually drew the attention of Governor Arihnda Pryce, who requested that Grand Admiral Thrawn be sent to deal with the rebels.

The Darksaber and Mandalore#

In 2 BBY, while hunting the former Sith Lord and deposed ruler of Mandalore Maul, Wren discovered the Darksaber on Dathomir. She initially wanted nothing to do with the ancient weapon, but Jarrus and the Mandalorian Protector Fenn Rau convinced her to wield it so that she might unite the Mandalorian people and bring them into the rebellion. Trained by Jarrus to master the blade through the Trials of the Darksaber, she returned to her family and convinced them of the Empire's treachery, helping to kill the Imperial Viceroy Gar Saxon in the process and fighting at their side in the Mandalorian Civil War. With Clan Wren rallied, she returned to aid the Rebel Alliance.

Lothal and the loss of Kanan#

Wren and the Ghost crew eventually returned to Lothal for the final campaign against the Empire there. During this period Kanan Jarrus was killed, and Wren joined the other members of the Lothal resistance in mourning and then in renewed resolve. She and Garazeb Orrelios sabotaged Pryce's victory parade in Capital City, and she infiltrated the excavation of the Lothal Jedi Temple, where the Imperial minister Veris Hydan interrogated her about the World Between Worlds. The campaign succeeded in liberating Lothal, but only after her friend Ezra Bridger disappeared into hyperspace with the Star Destroyer Chimaera.

Jedi apprentice and the search for Ezra#

At some point after the liberation of Lothal, Wren became the apprentice of the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano, despite being no more Force-sensitive than the average person, training aboard Tano's shuttle in the company of the droid scholar Huyang. Near the end of the Galactic Civil War the two parted ways, as Ahsoka came to fear that Sabine was training for the wrong reasons after the Empire destroyed Mandalore during the Night of a Thousand Tears, killing her family. Wren took up residence in Bridger's old comm tower for years following the fall of the Empire. Around 9 ABY, Tano returned with a clue in the search for the missing Ezra, leading Sabine to cross paths with Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati. After giving up a star map the enemy sought, Wren was taken to the other galaxy shown on the map, where she found Bridger on the unknown world of Peridea. Their reunion came at the cost of allowing Morgan Elsbeth to reach her master, the lost Grand Admiral Thrawn, and return him to their galaxy. Wren and Tano were left stranded on Peridea when Thrawn escaped, but the ordeal had given Sabine the chance to unlock the Force within herself at last.
