The New Republic was the representative democratic government founded by the victorious Alliance to Restore the Republic in the aftermath of the Galactic Civil War, restoring republican rule to the galaxy in homage to the Old Republic. Established in 5 ABY under the leadership of Chancellor Mon Mothma, it governed through a restored Galactic Senate and rotated its capital among member worlds rather than fixing it on Coruscant. Its later complacency toward the rising First Order proved fatal when its capital was destroyed in the Hosnian Cataclysm of 34 ABY.

Founding from the Alliance#

As the Galactic Empire tightened its grip, local resistance groups across many worlds were organized by Senators Mon Mothma and Bail Organa into rebel cells that became the Alliance to Restore the Republic. After the Alliance destroyed the second Death Star and killed the Emperor at the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, the Empire began to crumble, and the rebels declared themselves the New Republic in homage to the Old Republic they had fought to restore. New Republic forces swelled as broadcasts of the second Death Star's destruction rallied thousands to take up arms.

Defeating the Imperial remnants#

Even after Endor the war continued. The Emperor's posthumous contingency plan, Operation: Cinder, sought to devastate worlds such as Naboo with climate disruption arrays, but Alliance forces foiled it. The young government turned resources toward efforts like Project Starhawk, building warships out of captured Star Destroyers under the command of General Hera Syndulla. As the Empire fractured into warlord remnants, Admiral Rae Sloane attempted to unite its last leaders, but the Rebellion on Akiva killed or captured key Imperial figures. The Empire made its final stand at the Battle of Jakku, after which the war ended in 5 ABY with the signing of the Galactic Concordance.

Government and reform#

In remaking itself, the New Republic deliberately broke with the structures that had enabled Palpatine's rise. It dropped the title "Supreme" from the Chancellorship, stripped Coruscant of its traditional role as permanent capital, and rotated the Senate among member worlds, with Chandrila and later Hosnian Prime serving as seats of government. The Military Disarmament Act reduced the New Republic Defense Force after the war. These reforms helped win former Separatist worlds to the new government, but they also produced political partisanship in the Senate, where Populists favored the sovereignty of member worlds and Centrists lobbied for a stronger central government and greater military spending.

Frontier instability and the warlord era#

The New Republic never held complete control over the galaxy, particularly in the Outer Rim, where there was little economic stability or rule of law. Former Imperials became warlords, and remnant stormtroopers dissolved into mercenary bands serving them. One such remnant was led by Moff Gideon, a former Imperial Security Bureau officer who built his faction from the remains of the Imperial military. New Republic pilots such as Carson Teva patrolled the Outer Rim hunting Imperial holdouts, while figures like the Mandalorian Din Djarin occasionally worked with the Republic in an outside-the-law capacity. Behind the scenes, a Shadow Council prepared its remnants for a new war and planned for the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Complacency and the First Order#

As the years passed, the New Republic drifted into an era of complacency. Despite mounting aggression from the First Order, which mobilized and developed its military in defiance of the Galactic Concordance, the Galactic Senate refused to view it as a credible threat, regarding senators like Leia Organa who warned of the danger as fixated on the past. Some Centrist senators secretly colluded with the Order to block funding for the Republic Navy. When Organa's investigation into criminal activity uncovered the early threads of the First Order's network, she was sidelined by a scandal revealing that her father had been Darth Vader, forcing her resignation. Unable to move the Senate, she founded the Resistance to oppose the Order directly.

The Hosnian Cataclysm#

In 34 ABY the First Order fired its superweapon, Starkiller Base, at the Hosnian system, destroying the capital world of Hosnian Prime. The blast obliterated the Republic's leadership and its Home Fleet, was visible from across the galaxy, and ignited a new galactic war. With its government decapitated in a single stroke, the New Republic effectively ceased to exist, leaving the Resistance to carry on its ideals of democracy and freedom against the First Order.
