Every Force Lightning Color Explained

Alongside the Force choke, Force lightning is the most recognizable dark side power in Star Wars, and most people know it in exactly one shade: the blue-white torrent Palpatine unloads on Luke aboard the second Death Star. There are more colors than that. This guide covers every recorded variant across Canon and Legends, who used it, how strong it was, and what each color appears to mean. One warning before we start, and it is the same one the video leads with: there is far less hard evidence here than the confident explanations floating around suggest. Where something is inference rather than stated fact, this guide says so.

How Force lightning works#

Force lightning, known variously as Sith lightning or dark lightning, is an offensive power conjured through the dark side. The user channels Force energy down their limbs and hurls arcing bolts from the fingertips or palms, with one hand or two. A powerful discharge branches out into dozens of smaller forks, which is how a skilled practitioner hits several enemies at once. It can also be delivered by touch, with a Sith or Jedi laying a hand on someone and sending the current straight through it. Some users flashed it around their eyes or fingertips purely as a display of power.

The reason it comes up so often as an instrument of torture is that it does two things at once: severe physical damage and unbearable agony. Darth Sidious used it repeatedly on Darth Maul and worked his way up through the intensity range on Luke Skywalker, starting at an agonizing but survivable dose. Darth Malak used it to break Bastila Shan aboard the Leviathan before turning her.

Canon lists five colors for the ability: blue, green, yellow, white, and red. The standard is a bluish-purple or bluish-white, which is what Darth Sidious, Darth Tyranus, Snoke, Yoda, and Rey all produce. Legends adds purple as its own recorded hue and one genuine oddity in black.

Blue Force lightning#

Canon and Legends. Blue is the default and by far the most common form of the ability. It still demands that the user reach into the worst of themselves and pull up as much hatred as they can hold, but at moderate intensity it is agonizing rather than lethal, which puts it at the weaker end of the scale. Sidious deliberately exploited that range against Luke, opening at a level designed to hurt without killing and escalating from there.

Blue is what you tend to see from apprentices rather than masters, Darth Tyranus included. That is a pattern, not a rule, and the exceptions are pointed. Darth Malgus and Galen Marek both worked in blue while ranking among the most capable practitioners the ability has ever had. Marek could kill with a single blast, hit many targets at once, deflect incoming lightning with his bare hands, charge objects and people and use them as improvised grenades, and wrap a shield of lightning around himself. In Canon, Palpatine's blue lightning over Exegol was strong enough to tear apart an entire fleet of starships, which should settle any argument that blue is inherently the weak option.

The reading the video offers is that blue draws on a broader mix of emotions, anger and the lust for power as well as hatred, where purple concentrates on hatred alone. That is inference rather than stated lore, but it fits the pattern of who uses which.

Purple Force lightning#

Legends. Purple runs on the same fuel as blue, pure hatred and the desire to inflict pain, only more of it. Its recorded users are Palpatine, Darth Bane, and Darth Nox, three of the most accomplished practitioners in galactic history.

At the height of his power Sidious could produce lightning that vaporized its target outright. He could also conjure blasts strong enough to physically hurl a victim backwards, and at full potency he reduced people to charred husks, which is what happened to Headmaster Gentis after his attempted coup. Bane's lightning routinely electrocuted opponents to death on contact.

If hatred is the most powerful dark side emotion, then a color fed by hatred alone should generally be the strongest, and that is the standard explanation for why purple outranks blue. It also explains the exceptions. More warrior-shaped Sith, the ones driven by conquest rather than pure loathing, tended toward blue and could still be devastating with it.

Red Force lightning#

Canon and Legends. Red is the one everybody wants to be the strongest, and the evidence is circumstantial but consistent.

In Canon, the Son used red lightning against his sister on Mortis. The Son was the dark side itself in person, not just a user of it, which is about as strong an association as a color can get. The other Canon instance is stranger. Traveling through an illusion-filled plain of reality inside the portal beneath his castle on Mustafar, the disembodied spirit of Darth Vader blasted an illusion of Sidious with red lightning before confronting the image of his late wife. Vader never used lightning in the flesh, and the reason is mechanical rather than philosophical: his life support systems were poorly insulated and the delicate circuitry was vulnerable to the damage lightning caused, a weakness that eventually contributed to his death.

Legends puts red in the hands of Darth Tenebrous, whose lightning sometimes came forth in that color, as well as Darth Desolous, Darth Maul, and Tenebrae, the Sith Emperor himself.

Two claims often attached to red are worth flagging as unofficial. The first is that it cannot be taught and has to be innate. The second is that being struck by it can strip the victim of their connection to the Force. Neither is stated in the source material the way the power rankings usually imply, so treat both as fan reading. What is clear is that red is the most feared version, largely because of the company it keeps. It also does not follow that every red user outclasses everyone else. Palpatine was described as a far more sophisticated practitioner of the ability than Tenebrous ever was.

White Force lightning#

Canon and Legends. White is listed among the five colors Canon recognises, and the bluish-white end of the standard range is what Yoda produces. As a distinct variant, though, it belongs to Legends and to one man.

The Hidden One, Koro Ziil, led a secret sect within the Baran Do sages, a light side Force tradition of the Kel Dor on the planet Dorin. The Hidden Ones faked their own deaths in a farewell ceremony and lived on inside a cavern system, cut off from the outside world and slowly losing their vitality to boredom. The Baran Do specialized in unusual techniques the Jedi never pursued, weather sense among them, and white lightning was one more entry on that list. Ziil used it in a duel against Luke Skywalker, who blocked it with his lightsaber without much trouble.

Since Electric Judgment is recorded as appearing green, white, or golden, there is a reasonable case that the Hidden One's white lightning is simply that power under another name, produced by a tradition that never called it anything.

Black Force lightning#

Legends. Black is the strangest entry on this list and belongs to exactly one person. Jaina Solo, daughter of Han and Leia, produced a black variant of Force lightning during a period of intense anger.

No source explains the color. It was destructive, and it did not appear to drag her fully into the dark side the way sustained use of the standard version tends to, which suggests it is less corrosive than ordinary Sith lightning and closer in character to the light side branch below. The most workable reading is that its fuel was anger rather than hatred, and that the difference in emotion showed up as a difference in color.

Yellow Force lightning#

Canon and Legends. Yellow is where the neat dark side story breaks, because this color has its own name and its own origin story on the light side.

Electric Judgment, also recorded as Emerald Lightning, is a light side technique that sprays electric bolts of variable intensity from the hands and fingers. It appears green, white, or golden rather than blue, but functions almost identically to the dark side version, needing to be channeled through living flesh and capable of being used lethally. The Jedi Order classified it as forbidden at one point, and most Councils across its history refused to sanction it.

Plo Koon is the reason it has a name. Sent to capture the criminal Dreed Pommel in the city of Ektra on Metellos, Koon found that Pommel had murdered a young girl's entire family and taken her hostage. He let out a barrage of lightning at Pommel's head that disarmed him, then a second burst that knocked him unconscious. He reported the incident to the Council immediately and said something that changed how the order thought about the power: he had felt no anger and no fear during it, was calm and in control of his emotions throughout, and was never tempted to kill once the criminal was subdued. He concluded he had been acting on the will of the Force rather than perverting it. The Council asked him to meditate on whether using it had been wrong. He came back with the answer that ignoring the power would have been the real mistake, given that Claria Labreezle survived because he used it, and he recorded his experiences on the Great Holocron under the name Electric Judgment.

Electric Judgment is generally weaker than the dark side version, usually shown as a short bolt rather than a torrent. But there is another set of yellow users who complicate that. Force users of the Eternal Empire produced a yellow-orange variant, Arcann among them, and their version reads as nearly as strong as regular Force lightning. The Knights of Zakuul believed the Force was a tool to be used in the pursuit of justice and treated no area of it as off limits, dark side included, which puts them squarely in the gray. If yellow can be a light side power and a dark side one depending on how far it is pushed, that is the group proving it.

Canon backs that up bluntly. Darth Momin's lightning glowed yellow, and he used it at the moment of ignition to slow down time, freezing the expressions of horror and pain on a city's inhabitants permanently. There is no explanation for why his was that color, but there is no doubt at all which side of the Force he was drawing on.

Green Force lightning#

Canon and Legends. Green covers two separate things that happen to look alike, and keeping them apart matters.

The first is Electric Judgment again. When a Jedi uses the light side version, it frequently comes out green, which is where the name Emerald Lightning comes from. Yoda could summon it and used it during the Clone Wars, burning away a dark reflection of himself with a touch. Jedi champions and soldiers of the light unleashed green lightning often enough for it to be a recognized pattern. Jacen Solo struck multiple targets at once with it on Ebaq 9 and later used it as a shield of electricity against incoming enemy lightning during the reconquest of Coruscant. Luke Skywalker used a version capable of killing instantly, and in 45 ABY he and Leia wove shells of defensive golden lightning around themselves inside a monolith. Nobody has ever explained why some light siders produce green and others gold or white.

The second is Nightsister magick, and it is not really Force lightning at all. Mother Talzin's version appeared green like magical ichor and behaved completely differently: fired in concentrated beams rather than forks, homing in on multiple targets from a distance, and powerful enough to destroy a B1 battle droid in seconds. She could launch it while simultaneously holding a shield that absorbed blaster fire and incoming lightning. When she and Sidious finally faced each other, her lightning was strong enough to block his outright.

The Nightsisters do not fit the Jedi and Sith framework. Some believed in the Winged Goddess, a deity of life, fertility, and divination, and some in the Fanged God, a deity of death and the hunt. Their mindset let them avoid the passions and rage that governed the Sith while reaching for powers the Jedi refused to touch. So a green Nightsister beam is not a light side ability wearing dark clothes or the reverse. It comes out of a tradition that answers to something else entirely.

Blocking and surviving Force lightning#

Because the power is electricity, anything that resists an electrical current will ground it. Gungan personal energy shields repelled it, as did squad shields.

A lightsaber works too. Obi-Wan Kenobi deflected Dooku's lightning with his blade without much visible effort, and Quinlan Vos sent Tyranus's straight back at him. Mace Windu could reflect it to its source with what Legends calls a superconducting loop, a Vaapad technique that demanded tremendous effort from him during his fight with Sidious. Bare hands work for a Jedi of sufficient skill: Yoda absorbed and deflected the power against both Sidious and Tyranus using nothing else, Revan absorbed a full barrage from Darth Nyriss and returned it, destroying her with her own power, and Galen Marek walked toward Palpatine through it. Luke managed the same trick briefly before the Emperor overwhelmed him.

The strongest practitioners get round all of that. Sidious produced blasts carrying enough kinetic energy to rip an ignited lightsaber out of Yoda's grip, forcing him to fall back on tutaminis.

Surviving it is not the end of the problem either. Victims suffered generalized muscle aches and double vision, and without complete bed rest and proper treatment the condition became chronic and lingered for years. Luke was diagnosed by 4 ABY and spent his trip to Bakura confined to a hoverchair, days after nearly dying to Sidious.

What the colors actually mean#

Darth Plagueis had a line about this. Anyone sufficiently strong in the Force could be trained to produce a facsimile, he said, but not true Sith lightning, which required strength of a sort only a Sith could command, because the Sith accept consequence and reject compassion.

He was wrong, or at least incomplete. Plo Koon produced lightning while calm and in full control, and the Council let him keep it. Talzin produced hers by serving something that predates both orders. What the color appears to track is not raw power but which emotion the user is drawing on and how hard they are pulling. Hatred at full pressure gives purple. A broader mix gives blue. Anger without the hatred underneath it gave Jaina Solo black. A refusal to feel any of it gives green or gold. Red belongs to beings that are the dark side rather than merely serving it.

Used in small doses for the right reasons, the ability sits comfortably on the light side. Used the way Sidious used it, it is a torture instrument.
