The Most Powerful Sith Lords, Ranked

The Sith Code is blunt about it: power and strength are the goals. For the Sith that pursuit was never simply greed. It was spiritual. They believed power broke their chains and freed them from the things they saw as slavery, death included. The Sith existed in one form or another for hundreds of thousands of years, and out of the thousands who held the title, one question keeps coming back. Which of them actually got closest to unlimited power? This page works through seven of the strongest contenders and then measures them against each other four different ways, because power is not one thing. Almost all of this is Legends material, since that is where the deep Sith history lives.

King Adas#

Continuity: Legends.

Many consider Adas the first Sith Lord, and his people remembered him as the Sith'ari. He ruled Korriban around 28,000 BBY, in a reign that lasted close to three hundred years, and he was raised from youth as a chosen being. He was large even for his species, with unusually charcoal colored skin, he encased himself in ebon armor, and he carried a massive battle-axe.

This was a hard period for the Sith species and for the wider galaxy. Star systems across known space were under the grip of the Rakata, a dark side wielding species with technology nobody could match. Adas was the first Sith to unite the warring clans and tribes of Korriban, doing it through a run of bloody wars, and not long after he had done it the Rakata of the Infinite Empire arrived. They started by teaching him how to record his essence into a holocron, which he used to build one of his own, and only then did he realize they intended to take Korriban. He took his axe to them. His people drove the invaders off, the first to break the Rakata in over ten thousand years, and Adas died doing it.

His real ceiling is unknowable, because so little about him survives. He was a master swordsman and a master of Sith sorcery and alchemy, the sort of abilities that the Sith of the Clone Wars era had almost entirely lost. What is certain is that he broke the species that built the Star Forge, and that alone puts him in the conversation.

Tulak Hord#

Continuity: Legends.

Another ancient Sith, and like Adas he was known for Sith magic and alchemy. That is not what gets him on this list. Tulak Hord was considered by many to be the most skilled duelist of all time, and Darth Traya, the master of Revan, agreed. Speaking to Meetra Surik, she remarked that facing an ancient Sith Lord in combat would teach you that the moderns are as children playing with toys next to the prowess of the old masters.

Exactly when he ruled has been lost, but he presided over one of the Sith Empire's golden ages. He personally broke sieges the Jedi had laid on Imperial strongholds, which left over a thousand Jedi Knights dead, and he went on to conquer more than a hundred worlds. He also used the Force drain ability, the same power Darth Nihilus would later take to its extreme, stripping the life force out of everyone near him in battle to top up his own while weakening his enemies. He is even said to have brought down a warship with nothing but his mind, in the way Starkiller pulls a Star Destroyer out of the sky in The Force Unleashed.

Darth Andeddu#

Andeddu invented a large share of the dark side toolkit that later Sith would take for granted. He was a master of Sith alchemy, telekinesis and Force illusion. The one that matters most is essence transfer, his own creation, and the reason the Sith had a way to cheat death at all.

He rose during the old Sith Empire, and the more prominent he got the more his brethren looked at him with fear and jealousy. Andeddu became paranoid that they would rise up and take his power, so he guarded his new abilities from the rest of the order. He was right. Lesser Sith eventually banded together to overthrow him, and he fled Korriban for his homeworld of Prakith, leaving behind a false tomb so the others would believe he was dead. On Prakith he took over and gave himself the modest title of Immortal God-King, ruling for centuries.

His paranoia eventually ate him alive, and he chose to die rather than live to watch his accumulated knowledge fall into enemy hands. Andeddu believed that true power came from the mind rather than the body, and that anything he held to be true would make itself true in reality. That belief kept him going in ghost form for thousands of years, right up to the time of Darth Krayt, who eventually learned essence transfer from his holocron.

Darth Krayt#

Continuity: Legends.

Krayt was the preeminent Sith after Palpatine. Rather than the Rule of Two he instituted the Rule of One, ruling over a whole order of lesser Sith through sheer personal power. Every other Sith in the galaxy could feel his presence, which kept them fearful and obedient.

He was formidable in the Force, using lightning and Force healing to great effect. On one occasion he beat Cade Skywalker, a descendant of Luke Skywalker, using nothing but the Force. He is also one of very few mortals to fight Abeloth and live, though he had help from Grand Master Luke Skywalker, who was himself wary of him. Krayt's political power was as real as his personal power. He destroyed the New Jedi Order and ruled most of the galaxy.

Like Andeddu, he was a master of essence transfer and other dark side healing techniques. After Darth Wyyrlok struck him down, he used dark transfer to bring his own body back from death, an ability that magnified his power in the Force and let him carry on in his original body. He then retook Coruscant and killed Wyyrlok. All told, the dark side kept him alive for nearly two hundred years, and it probably would have run longer had Cade Skywalker not finished him for good.

Palpatine#

Continuity: canon and Legends.

The most famous Sith, and in Legends the most successful by a distance. A reborn Palpatine was highly skilled in the Force storm, which he used to tear up planetary surfaces, destroy entire fleets and hurl individuals thousands of light years across the galaxy. In theory the same power could move people, or himself, through time.

He was proficient in Sith alchemy and Sith magic, though this was not his best area, because so much of that knowledge had already been lost by the Imperial era. He did manage to rediscover essence transfer, dominating a target's mind and taking their body outright, which gave him a working form of immortality. He was also skilled in all seven forms of lightsaber combat, fighting Yoda to a standstill and putting down Maul and Savage Opress with relative ease.

The real weapon was his mind. Palpatine was a master manipulator, partly through his ability to cloak himself in the Force and partly through raw intelligence and charisma, and he is the only Sith who ever succeeded in destroying the Republic. That gave him a galaxy's worth of resources to build dark side abominations and technological terrors with. None of that is his personal power, but his skills as a politician bought him more than any single dark side ability ever did. His Force powers should not be written off either. When he finally died for good, it took the combined strength of every dead Jedi to condemn his spirit to chaos and stop him coming back a third time.

Vitiate, the Sith Emperor#

Continuity: Legends.

Vitiate was even better than Palpatine at dominating minds. He seized control of eight thousand fellow Sith and used them for a week long ritual of Sith magic on Nathema that consumed their spirits and stripped the entire planet of the Force, absorbing the life force of every living thing on it and leaving the population as piles of dust. He did it to grant himself near immortality and a vastly stronger connection to the dark side, feeding on those spirits to live for a thousand years. His long term goal was to repeat the ritual on a galactic scale, this time draining everything.

He was one of the great users of Sith alchemy and Sith magic, working through artifacts and rituals that deepened his link to the dark side. Like Sidious, Andeddu and Krayt he could use essence transfer, but he took it much further. As well as moving his consciousness into others when killed, he could plant fragments of his spirit inside unsuspecting hosts. The most consequential use of that was taking the body and identity of Valkorion, a man of Zakuul, and using it to build the Eternal Empire out in the Unknown Regions while still ruling the Sith Empire.

Lightsaber work was not his strength. He was skilled but he leaned on the fact that he kept body doubles to stop himself dying, choosing to chase power through the dark side rather than through blade skill. Like Palpatine, his spirit was ultimately condemned to chaos by the combined might of many fallen Jedi, ending a rule that had run for over a millennium.

Darth Nihilus#

Continuity: Legends.

The Lord of Hunger did not want to rule the galaxy. He wanted to eat it. Because Nihilus was a wound in the Force itself, he needed no complex ritual or artifact to do damage. He could consume the entire life force of a planet with his mind, which is what happened to the Miraluka colony world of Katarr.

He was not much of a duelist compared to the other names here, but his Force powers more than covered it. He could sever another Force user's connection to the Force entirely, which is exactly what he did to his own master, Darth Traya, after she had found him and trained him at the Trayus Academy. Nihilus is also unlike any other Sith in what the dark side did to him. It consumed his body until nothing was left but the dark soul, which makes him closer to a dark side entity like the Son or Abeloth than to a man. Even after he was killed aboard the Ravager over Telos, he persisted: his holocron carried a gatekeeper in his form, and Darth Krayt eventually came into possession of it.

Ranked by lightsaber and melee skill#

Tulak Hord and Darth Krayt were probably the most skilled with a blade, with Palpatine close behind. Nihilus and Vitiate sit level with each other, and Andeddu comes last. Adas never touched a lightsaber, since they had not been invented yet, but his skill with that legendary axe likely puts him alongside Tulak Hord and Krayt when the measure is melee combat rather than sabers specifically.

Ranked by mastery of the dark side#

Vitiate takes it. Andeddu, Tulak Hord and Adas were all powerful Sith sorcerers, probably of roughly equal skill, but Vitiate was the one who perfected the spells and rituals. After he died, much of that magic was lost to the Sith, and by Palpatine's era it was practically legend. Palpatine rediscovered a lot of it, but he was killed and destroyed before he could rival Vitiate, who had over a thousand years on the throne against Palpatine's twenty.

Krayt lands second from last here for the same reason. Too much Sith magic had been lost by his time, which forced him to build new variants of old abilities, dark transfer among them. Nihilus is last, which is a strange thing to write about a being of that power, except that he never needed spells or alchemy at all.

Ranked by raw Force potential#

Here Nihilus takes the top spot outright. No rituals, no artifacts, no preparation. He simply had the innate ability to strip a planet of the Force. Vitiate comes next, a Sith so strong he had seized a Sith colony world while still a child. Adas probably sat at a similar level, given that his own people called him the Sith'ari.

Palpatine follows, with a Force potential comparable to Yoda's, and Tulak Hord was likely around the same level. Andeddu and Krayt come last, because most of what made them dangerous came from unorthodox and experimental use of the dark side rather than from sheer Force strength.

Ranked by political power#

The most important measure, and Palpatine wins it outright. He is the only Sith who ever achieved the stated aim of galactic domination, and he was the undisputed ruler of the Empire with no genuine threat to his rule.

Krayt is second. His empire was almost as large as Palpatine's, but the instability baked into the Rule of One meant his grip was never as tight and he was always at risk of being deposed. Vitiate is third. His Sith Empire was strong but never actually beat the Republic, and although his Eternal Empire briefly held both the Sith and the Republic, he was overthrown soon after. His Sith Empire also suffered constant internal fighting, with Sith like Darth Malgus walking away from his rule entirely.

Tulak Hord is genuinely hard to place. He probably held real weight inside the Sith Empire, but the record is too thin to say more. He most likely had less than Vitiate and more than Andeddu and Adas. Adas comes second to last mainly because his kingdom was so small. He held total power over subjects who worshiped him as a god, and had he ruled during a Sith golden age he would rank far higher. Andeddu is last. Ruling a single planet is not enough for a Sith Lord.

The verdict#

Andeddu is the weakest name on this list. Beyond discovering essence transfer he achieved very little, and Vitiate outclassed him at dark side magic anyway. Tulak Hord and King Adas end up level with each other. Both were enormously powerful in the Force, but both ruled at a time when the Sith were weak and barely a spacefaring culture, and in melee combat they are among the greatest ever.

Krayt was undeniably powerful, but so much Sith knowledge had already been lost by his time that he was working at a real disadvantage. His blade skill and his empire are what keep him off the bottom. Nihilus is next, and that Force drain ability alone makes him one of the most dangerous beings ever to hold the title, but his lightsaber work was poor enough that Palpatine or Vitiate would most likely beat him.

The title goes to Vitiate. He held political power over two empires, was close to unkillable, and was highly skilled across a wide range of dark side abilities. Palpatine came out of the Rule of Two era and built his power through treachery rather than through military force and raw dark side strength, and he simply did not have the time. Vitiate had over a thousand extra years to work his plans and sharpen his skills. That makes him the most powerful Sith Lord in Star Wars.
