Every Clone Legion, Corps, Battalion and Company Explained

The Grand Army of the Republic fielded roughly 3.2 million clone troopers, every one of them grown from the genetic template of the bounty hunter Jango Fett. Tens of thousands went into the First Battle of Geonosis against the Separatist droid army, the Senate handed Palpatine authority over military affairs, and within weeks the fighting had spread from the Outer Rim all the way back to Coruscant. That army was not one mass of identical soldiers. It was a nested structure of corps, legions, battalions and companies, each with its own commanders, armor markings and battle record. This page works through every named unit that has appeared across the films, shows, games, comics and books, in both canon and Legends.

Clone trooper corps#

Continuity: canon and Legends.

The largest formation covered here. A corps was made up of four legions, totaling around 36,000 soldiers, and was led by a Jedi General alongside a clone Marshal Commander.

21st Nova Corps#

Far better known as the Galactic Marines. Led by clone Marshal Commander Bacara and Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi. Clones assigned to the 21st had a reputation for discipline and were trained to operate in harsh, hostile environments, which is why they wore specialized armor. Their most notable deployment was the Mygeeto campaign.

7th Sky Corps#

Led by clone Marshal Commander Cody and Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. The 212th Attack Battalion sat inside the 7th Sky Corps, and both wore armor with orange markings. Key engagements include Christophsis, Ryloth, the First Battle of Felucia, the Second Battle of Geonosis, Umbara and Utapau.

91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps#

Commanded by Adi Gallia with clone Commander Ponds, who held the post until his death and was replaced by Commander Neyo. Mace Windu also led units inside the 91st, including the 187th Legion, and Jedi Generals Oppo Rancisis and Stass Allie took command at various points in the war. Trained for mobile warfare and reconnaissance, the 91st was a smaller and more maneuverable corps, frequently sent ahead to scout and secure passage for heavier formations. Ryloth, Malastare and Saleucami were among its most significant campaigns.

327th Star Corps#

Under clone Marshal Commander Bly and Jedi General Aayla Secura. The 7th Legion was part of the 327th. Beyond the distinctive yellow insignia on their armor, pauldrons and kamas were issued to the corps' higher ranking infantry. The Battle of Quell, the Siege of Saleucami and the Battle of Felucia were the corps' most significant engagements.

41st Elite Corps#

Commanded by Jedi General Luminara Unduli and Commander Gree, with subunits including the 41st Scout Battalion and Green Company. During the defense of Kashyyyk, Jedi General Yoda supported Unduli and Gree in command. The 41st was a corps in its own right but was organized as part of the 9th Assault Corps, which Unduli also led and which wore the same armor. Color schemes varied considerably across both formations, with green and gray markings chosen to suit the terrain, and specialized camouflage armor issued for Kashyyyk. They also fought at the Second Battle of Geonosis and the Battle of Coruscant.

87th Sentinel Corps#

Continuity: Legends.

Marked out by the maroon markings on their armor. Because of their proficiency in urban defense tactics they were regularly dispatched to Republic cities at risk of falling under Separatist control. Little more than that is recorded about them.

416th Star Corps#

Continuity: Legends.

Led by Jedi General K'Kruhk. They are known to have fought at the defense of Teyr, where much of the unit was wiped out. Almost nothing else about them survives.

Clone law enforcement units#

These formations did not belong to any single corps or legion.

Coruscant Guard#

A division of elite shock troopers who served as a military police force and guarded the Republic's capital world. They were also occasionally assigned to support diplomatic missions off world. Clone Commander Fox, known for his intense loyalty to the Republic, was the Guard's lead commander, with Commander Thire, Commander Stone and Commander Thorn leading units within it. Their crimson armor markings made them one of the more intimidating sights of the war. After the Galactic Empire was declared they carried on as a security unit on Coruscant, now with the added job of enforcing the rule of Emperor Palpatine.

Kamino Security Force#

They wore armor similar to the Coruscant Guard's shock troopers but with gray markings instead of red. They operated under Jedi General Shaak Ti, who also oversaw clone trooper training. Whenever Tipoca City went on alert, the Kamino Security Force was responsible for defending the military complex and Prime Minister Lama Su.

Fifth Fleet Security#

Continuity: Legends.

The last law enforcement formation on the list, and the thinnest documented. They are only known to have worn navy blue armor markings and to have been responsible for maintaining security aboard Republic cruisers.

Clone legions#

A legion held around 9,200 soldiers and was typically led by a Jedi General with a senior Clone Commander beneath him.

501st Legion#

The most famous unit in the entire army. Both the 332nd Company and Torrent Company belonged to it. The 501st fought under Jedi General Anakin Skywalker alongside his apprentice Ahsoka Tano, Captain Rex and later Commander Appo. Its troopers were known for bravery, daring tactics and devotion to the Republic. They fought at Christophsis, the Second Battle of Geonosis, Umbara, the Siege of Mandalore and, at the end, the assault on the Jedi Temple. After the Empire was founded the 501st continued to serve Skywalker under a new name: Vader's Fist.

7th Legion#

Continuity: Legends.

Overseen by senior Clone Commander A'den and part of the 327th Star Corps under Aayla Secura and Commander Bly. Clone Commander Faie was also attached to the 7th and took part in the Siege of Saleucami, its most notable action. The Hawkbat Battalion sat within the 7th.

187th Legion#

An elite unit organized under the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps and commanded by Mace Windu. Its armor markings matched the color of its Jedi General's purple lightsaber blade, although at the Battle of Anaxes the legion's troops appeared with maroon markings instead. Beyond Anaxes, the 187th was present at the Battle of Dantooine and the Battle of Coruscant.

125th Legion#

Led by Commander Doom. Its infantry wore unique gray and green painted armor and were seen using blast shields and Z-6 rotary blaster cannons in combat. Its most significant action was the Battle of Ringo Vinda, where the twin Jedi Generals Tiplar and Tiplee took command alongside Doom.

182nd Legion#

Continuity: Legends.

Identifiable by its red marked troopers. One of its squads was commanded by clone Sergeant Marrt. No Jedi General or Clone Commander has ever been attached to the legion on record.

Clone battalions#

Continuity: canon and Legends.

A battalion consisted of four companies of 144 clone troopers each, for a total of 576 men, and was typically led by a Jedi General with a Clone Commander or major.

212th Attack Battalion#

The legendary one. It included Ghost Company, the 2nd Airborne Company and Eagle Company. Like the 7th Sky Corps it belonged to, it was led by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Commander Cody. The battalion built its reputation on siege breaking tactics and frontal assaults, and it was deployed repeatedly across the war: Christophsis, Ryloth, the Second Battle of Geonosis, Umbara, Anaxes and Utapau.

104th Battalion#

Better known as the Wolfpack. Throughout the Clone Wars the 104th was commanded by Clone Commander Wolffe and Jedi General Plo Koon, and was generally assigned relief and recovery work. Its appearance changed several times, starting with maroon painted phase one armor before switching to a gray scheme for the rest of the war. They fought at the first and second battles of Felucia and at the Battle of Kadavo.

Rancor Battalion#

Led by ARC Trooper Commander Colt alongside Commander Blitz, Commander Havoc and a fourth unidentified ARC commander. In the early stages of the war those four Advanced Recon Commandos oversaw training on Kamino. The battalion's infantry can be picked out by the maroon and grayish blue markings on their helmets and arms. Their best known action was the Battle of Kamino, defending Tipoca City against wave after wave of Separatist forces.

13th Battalion#

Also called the Iron Battalion, commanded by Jedi General Jaro Tapal and his Padawan Cal Kestis. Its soldiers wore yellow marked phase two armor, and the battalion's commander was issued the same gear as the standard infantry. The 13th fought in the invasion of Bracca and later carried out Order 66 against its own Jedi, which killed Tapal. The entire battalion then died when their Venator class Star Destroyer was destroyed.

Hawkbat Battalion#

Continuity: Legends.

A unit placed within the 327th Star Corps. Its troopers were supported by LAAT gunships and wore phase one armor with brown tunics. A clone major led Hawkbat into the First Battle of Geonosis, where most of the battalion was destroyed following orders to march on a line of Separatist spider droids.

Lancer Battalion#

Continuity: Legends.

Occasionally deployed against the Separatists' IG lancer combat droids and battle droid columns. These specialized speeder mounted warriors attacked at close quarters, spearing enemies with their lances. During the Battle of Muunilinst the battalion was led against Durge's forces by Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi, equipped in phase one clone trooper armor.

Grey's Battalion#

Commanded by Jedi General Depa Billaba, her Padawan Caleb Dume, Clone Commander Grey and Captain Styles. The officers of the battalion were originally seen with red armor markings, though Grey appears with light green markings in later material. At the Battle of Haruun Kal around ninety percent of the battalion's infantry was wiped out by General Grievous and his forces.

41st Scout Battalion#

A subunit inside the 41st Elite Corps that supported the defense of Kashyyyk. Like the corps above it, the battalion answered to Yoda, Luminara Unduli and Commander Gree. Its infantry were scout troopers in specialized camouflage armor, and the unit has not been seen since.

Sarlacc Battalions#

Continuity: Legends.

Also within the 41st Elite Corps, two battalions deployed together as a single brigade on a forest world. Many troops were killed or wounded in that engagement.

612th Attack Battalion#

Continuity: Legends.

An infantry cell under the control of Jedi Master Bolla Ropal and a clone commander. The 612th wore phase one armor in a range of colors including gray and red. Little else is recorded about them beyond their presence in the fighting on Devaron and Ukio.

442nd Siege Battalion#

A unit that specialized in besieging enemy strongholds. Its soldiers frequently used vehicles such as the AT-RT and wore phase two armor with green markings. They were sent to Cato Neimoidia in the final moments of the war alongside Jedi General Plo Koon and a clone commander. That is where Order 66 came through, and where Koon's Jedi starfighter was shot down by his own wingman, Captain Jag.

Combat Engineer Battalion#

Continuity: Legends.

A subdivision of the 38th Armored Division. These clone combat engineers specialized in operating heavy artillery, including turbolaser walkers and Republic artillery guns. Their heavy artillery soldiers wore white armor with dark brown markings. No specific battles are recorded for them.

Clone companies#

Continuity: canon and Legends.

Each company consisted of 144 troopers and was usually led by a Clone Commander or a captain.

332nd Company#

A subunit of the 501st Legion. Ahsoka Tano, the recently promoted Commander Rex and Captain Vaughn were given command of the company so they could stage an invasion of Mandalore alongside Bo-Katan Kryze and her forces. When Ahsoka returned, the company's infantry repainted their helmets in tribute to their Jedi commander. After Maul was captured, Order 66 came through and the company tried repeatedly to kill Tano, who escaped with Rex's help. Their Venator class Star Destroyer crashed on a moon and the rest of the 332nd died with it.

Torrent Company#

Another subunit of the 501st, and an elite one, led by Jedi General Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Commander Ahsoka Tano and clone Captain Rex. Torrent fought the Separatists across a string of engagements including the battles of Christophsis and Teth.

Green Company#

A clone trooper infantry unit belonging to the 41st Elite Corps, once again under Commander Gree and Jedi Master Luminara Unduli. Its members wore phase one armor painted with the 41st's green markings. Their most notable action came aboard their Star Destroyer, the Tranquility, where they had been assigned to transport Nute Gunray. Separatist forces attacked the ship, leaving Green Company to repel the boarders at the cost of heavy clone casualties.

Ghost Company#

A detail within the 212th Attack Battalion whose high ranking infantry wore clone trooper armor with light orange markings. They were led at the Battle of Ryloth by Obi-Wan Kenobi and Commander Cody, alongside troopers Boil and Waxer, who were instrumental in liberating the planet.

2nd Airborne Company#

Another subunit of the 212th, made up of specialized clone paratroopers. The company was deployed at the Battle of Utapau and helped hunt Kenobi after Order 66. Its troopers were issued helmets designed for high altitude drops, and orange slashes across their chest plates marked their affiliation with the 2nd.

Keeli's Company#

A unit under Captain Keeli and Jedi General Ima-Gun Di. The company's troopers wore brown and maroon markings. At the Battle of Ryloth they fought alongside freedom fighters commanded by Cham Syndulla while buying time for civilians to escape waves of battle droids. Keeli's Company fought down to the last man, with both Keeli and his Jedi General sacrificing themselves for the people of Ryloth.

Horn Company#

Commanded by clone Captain Lock and Jedi General Eeth Koth. Its troopers wore phase one armor with green and yellow markings. They were assigned to the Venator class Star Destroyer Steadfast when General Grievous attacked. After half the company was killed, Koth ordered the survivors to escape and allowed himself to be captured.

Tango Company#

Led by Barriss Offee, Ahsoka Tano and clone Lieutenant Trap. Every trooper in Tango Company was infected with Geonosian brain worms after the Second Battle of Geonosis while aboard a Republic medical frigate. The infected clones lost control of their minds, killed their pilot brothers and turned on their Jedi commanders. The company wore phase one armor with light blue markings, and many of its clones displayed Tango Company's emblem prominently on their plates.

K Company#

Continuity: Legends.

Organized under Hawkbat Battalion out of the 327th Star Corps and commanded by Captain Deviss. Deviss survived the First Battle of Geonosis, where most of Hawkbat Battalion was destroyed, and was promoted to Commander afterward. He went on to command K Company in later fighting.

What this list leaves out#

The units above cover the corps, legions, battalions and companies of the Grand Army. They are not the whole picture. Divisions, clone commando groups, starfighter squadrons and a range of other specialist formations sit outside those four tiers, and they run deep enough to need their own guide.
