By Joe Garratt

Jaina Solo was a Force-sensitive Human female who served as a Jedi Master of the New Jedi Order and earned a seat on its High Council. The daughter of Han Solo and Leia Organa, she was the twin sister of Jacen Solo and the elder sister of Anakin Solo. Named Sword of the Jedi by her uncle, Grand Master Luke Skywalker, for her courage during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, she became one of the great pilots of her generation and, in the end, the one who struck down her own brother after he fell as the Sith Lord Darth Caedus. This entry describes the Legends continuity.

Childhood#

Even before they were born, Jaina and her twin brother Jacen were the targets of repeated kidnapping attempts. The Grand Admiral Thrawn sought the unborn Force-sensitive children for the Dark Jedi Joruus C'baoth, and the family weathered further plots from the remnants of the Empire and the Dark Side Elite. For their safety the twins spent their earliest years in hiding, first under the care of the woman Winter, whom they came to regard almost as a mother, and later on the remote world of Anoth.

The twins returned to live with their parents on Coruscant when they were about two and a half years old. From the start Jaina shared a deep mental bond with Jacen, the two often completing each other's sentences and coordinating their mischief. She inherited her father Han's gift for machinery, and by the age of nine he trusted her to help with repairs and even to fly the Millennium Falcon. Through her childhood she and her brothers survived further kidnapping attempts, including abductions on Munto Codru and during the Corellian crisis sparked by her father's cousin, Thrackan Sal-Solo.

Apprenticeship at Yavin 4#

When she was thirteen, in 22 ABY, Jaina and Jacen began training at their uncle's Jedi Praxeum on Yavin 4. There she formed lasting friendships with the Wookiee Lowbacca, the Hapan princess Tenel Ka Djo, and the orphan Zekk. A capable pilot and mechanic, she once repaired a downed Imperial TIE fighter only for its long-stranded pilot, Qorl, to kidnap her and Jacen and force them to finish the work.

When Zekk fell under the sway of the Second Imperium and its Shadow Academy, Jaina refused to give up on him. During the Second Imperium's assault on the Praxeum she faced him in combat and tried one last time to turn him back to the light; in the end Zekk chose to save the Jedi and turned away from the dark side. With her friends she later helped expose and defeat the anti-Human Diversity Alliance, whose leader sought to unleash a stockpiled Imperial plague.

The Yuuzhan Vong War#

When the extragalactic Yuuzhan Vong invaded the galaxy, Jaina joined the New Republic military and distinguished herself as a pilot in Rogue Squadron. She fought on the front lines throughout the war and grew so feared by the enemy that they came to regard her as an avatar of the Trickster Goddess Yun-Harla. She eventually led her own unit, Twin Suns Squadron, and it was during this period that she first encountered the Chiss pilot Jagged Fel, nephew of Wedge Antilles, who would become the central relationship of her life.

The death of her younger brother Anakin Solo during the strike on Myrkr drove Jaina dangerously close to the dark side. She was redeemed with the aid of her fellow Jedi Kyp Durron. As the war continued she helped the reformed Galactic Alliance turn captured Yuuzhan Vong warships and biotechnology to their own advantage, and at the Battle of Ebaq she personally slew the Yuuzhan Vong Warmaster Tsavong Lah. For her tireless service her uncle named her the Sword of the Jedi, a title marking her as a warrior who would always be called to fight.

The Dark Nest Crisis and Swarm War#

As a survivor of the mission to Myrkr, Jaina was among the Jedi later drawn into the insectoid Killik community and Joined to it, sharing in its collective mind. This entangled her in the Dark Nest Crisis and the resulting Swarm War, in which she fought on the side of the Killiks against the Chiss. Her involvement strained her relationship with Jagged Fel, who served the Chiss, and divided the Jedi over the proper response to the conflict.

The Second Galactic Civil War#

In 40 ABY, as Corellia moved toward open war with the Galactic Alliance, Jaina took command of Hardpoint Squadron and fought at the Battle of Tralus. She and her brother Jacen briefly commanded Rogue Squadron together during the blockade of Corellia, but Jacen's increasingly ruthless conduct drove a rift between them. She was later paired with Jagged Fel and Zekk to hunt the renegade Dark Jedi Alema Rar.

The murder of her aunt Mara Jade Skywalker, and the mounting evidence of her brother's dark deeds, hardened Jaina's resolve to stop him. Inspired by a gift her father had received from the Mandalore Boba Fett, she traveled to Mandalore and persuaded Fett to train her in the skills she would need to face a Sith. After completing that hard tutelage, she confronted her twin, now the Sith Lord Darth Caedus, and killed him in a lightsaber duel aboard the Star Destroyer Anakin Solo.

Later years#

Following her brother's death, Jaina remained an active member of the New Jedi Order. When Chief of State Natasi Daala exiled Luke Skywalker as part of a bid to seize control of the Jedi, Jaina formed a covert group called Darkmeld to undermine Daala's efforts, even as the imprisonment of her friends Valin and Jysella Horn in carbonite drove the conflict toward crisis. Daala's growing extremism eventually prompted the Order to lead a coup that removed her from power.

Jaina then joined her uncle in confronting both a resurgent Sith threat and the dark side entity known as Abeloth. When the Sith and Abeloth seized control of the government on Coruscant, she took part in the infiltration and assault that drove out the occupiers, and during that struggle her uncle confirmed her as a Jedi Master. After the destruction of Abeloth and the end of the Sith threat, Jaina married Jagged Fel, the man she had loved through years of war and separation.
