What Happened When A Clone Commando Got A Jedi Padawan Pregnant?

They kept it, and then it killed her. Jedi General Etain Tur-Mukan and clone commando Darman, designation RC-1136, had a son named Venku Skirata during the Clone Wars, and formalised their union under Mandalorian custom. Etain survived Order 66. She died metres from the shuttle that would have reunited her with her family, cut down by accident by a Jedi Padawan she had stopped to protect.

Who Etain was#

Etain Tur-Mukan started the war as a Padawan. Her master was Jedi Master Kast Fulier, and when the Jedi Order lost contact with him, Omega Squad was deployed to Qiilura to destroy the scientist Ovolot Qail Uthan's laboratory. Etain helped them do it, and Uthan was taken into Republic custody.

She was never a standout in the way the Order measured people. Not gifted with raw Force power, not especially strict about the Jedi Code. What she did have was a genuine affinity for the clones. She stands in direct contrast to someone like Rahm Kota, who distrusted the clones and thought non-clone soldiers made better troops. Etain sympathised with them and treated them as people.

That temperament showed up in the field too. She was able to encourage and calm troopers during the fighting she took part in, to the point that it suggested she had at least some form of battle meditation.

By the later years she was a Jedi General. She and Bardan Jusik led Omega Squad, Delta Squad and a unit of Null ARC troopers through a purge of a Separatist terrorist group on Coruscant, and she led the counterattack on the Hadde rebels alongside elements of the 14th and 85th Infantry Brigades.

The relationship, and the child#

The Order banned attachment. Etain was not the only one who ignored that. The list of Jedi who broke the rule reads like a roll call: Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala, Quinlan Vos and Khaleen Hentz, Nejaa Halcyon and Scerra, and Etain Tur-Mukan and clone commando Darman Skirata.

Darman had his own view on it. He is quoted saying that one day they would get some lovesick Jedi doing something crazy, whatever the training was supposed to knock out of them, and it would not end well.

Etain fell pregnant and had the boy, Venku. Then she kept it from Darman. The reveal happened on Nerrif, while Omega and Delta were being redeployed from Haurgab to Coruscant. It was there that Jedi General Etain Tur-Mukan told her lover Darman Skirata, a clone commando of Omega Squad, that they had a son.

The union was formalised afterwards following Mandalorian custom, which is where the boy's surname comes from. The Skirata name belongs to Kal Skirata, the Mandalorian trainer who raised Darman and his brothers and who built the family that took Venku in.

What Order 66 did not do#

Etain lived through Order 66. That alone puts her in a very small group. The clones she had spent the war alongside were the ones with the orders, and the men closest to her did not carry them out against her.

The end came afterwards, during the escape, and it was pure accident. She intervened to protect a Padawan who was being pursued, a few moments before she was meant to board a shuttle that would have taken her back to her Mandalorian family. She was struck down by the very Jedi she had stopped to save, just metres from the people waiting for her.

No villain, no duel, no Sith. A frightened Padawan swinging at the wrong moment.

Venku after the war#

The child outlived both parents and the war that made him.

Venku Skirata, also called Kad'ika, grew up inside Kal Skirata's Mandalorian household and survived the Imperial era, which is the period covered by Imperial Commando: 501st. He was Force-sensitive, and he did not become a Jedi.

He was still around decades later. When Jaina Solo went to Mandalore to train under Boba Fett, she encountered a pair of Force-sensitive Mandalorians in a cantina: Bardan Jusik, using the name Gotab, and Venku. She had little chance to talk with them. Jusik had been a Jedi Knight who fought alongside Etain, and by then he had spent a lifetime living the other way.

Legends only#

All of this belongs to Karen Traviss's Republic Commando novels, principally Hard Contact and Order 66, with the aftermath in Imperial Commando: 501st. It is Legends. Etain, Darman, Venku, Omega Squad and the Skirata clan have not surfaced in Disney canon.

The reason the storyline still gets talked about is what it does to the clone premise. Most Clone Wars fiction asks whether the clones are people. This one just answers the question and moves on to the consequences: a Jedi General and a commando raising a child in the middle of a genocide, and the Order's own rules being the least of what goes wrong.
