By Joe Garratt

Boba Fett was a human man and crime lord whose career as a bounty hunter spanned decades, from the fall of the Galactic Republic to the era of the New Republic. An unaltered clone of the Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett, he was raised by Jango as a son and trained in combat from a young age. Wearing a customized suit of Mandalorian armor and flying the patrol craft Slave I, he became one of the most feared hunters of his age, taking contracts for both the Galactic Empire and the criminal underworld. After surviving the sarlacc and living for a time among the Tusken Raiders of Tatooine, he claimed the throne of the late Jabba the Hutt as Daimyo of Mos Espa.

Origins on Kamino#

Boba was created on the Wild Space world of Kamino as part of an arrangement between the Sith Lord Darth Tyranus and Jango Fett, the Mandalorian foundling who served as the genetic template for the clone army of the Republic. Originally code-named Alpha, he was an unaltered clone, and unlike the clone troopers grown from Jango's DNA he was raised by Jango as his son. He trained in combat and martial skills from childhood and idolized his father.

Vengeance and early career#

In the final days of the Separatist Crisis, Boba and Jango retreated to Geonosis, where Jango was killed in battle by the Jedi Master Mace Windu. Orphaned, Boba sought vengeance and attempted to assassinate Windu, though the plan failed. He was imprisoned on Coruscant for his actions, where he briefly crossed paths with a disguised Obi-Wan Kenobi. After his release, he took up his late father's profession as a bounty hunter, working alongside mercenaries such as Bossk, Dengar, and Asajj Ventress, and apprenticing himself to his father's former protégé, the gunslinger Cad Bane. He inherited Jango's Mandalorian armor and rebuilt it in his memory, reclaiming the Slave I as his own.

Service to the Empire and Jabba#

In the years after the Clone Wars, Fett built his reputation working for the gangster Jabba the Hutt and the Sith Lord Darth Vader. During the Galactic Civil War, Vader employed him to track down the smuggler Han Solo, and Fett pursued the Millennium Falcon to Bespin. After Solo was frozen in carbonite, Fett set out to deliver him to Jabba's Palace, briefly losing and then recovering his prize during the upheaval surrounding the return of Crimson Dawn. He ultimately handed Solo over to the impatient Hutt.

The sarlacc and the Tuskens#

Fett attempted to stop the Alliance's rescue of Solo at the Great Pit of Carkoon, but fell into the sarlacc when Solo accidentally struck his jetpack and sent it malfunctioning. Though he survived, his armor was taken by Jawa scavengers and sold to the marshal Cobb Vanth. For a time Fett lived in the company of a Tusken Raider tribe, who taught him their ways and the use of the gaderffii. After the tribe was slaughtered, he resolved to reclaim his place in the galaxy.

Reclaiming his armor#

Fett tracked his armor to the Mandalorian Din Djarin, who had taken it from Vanth, and confronted him on Tython. The two reached an accord, and Fett aided Djarin in rescuing the foundling Grogu from the Imperial warlord Moff Gideon. With his armor restored and the bounty hunter Fennec Shand at his side, Fett returned to Tatooine.

Daimyo of Mos Espa#

Fett killed Jabba's majordomo Bib Fortuna and claimed the late Hutt's throne as Daimyo of Mos Espa. Rather than rule through fear alone, he sought to win the respect of the city's people. His position drew challenges from the double-dealing mayor Mok Shaiz, from a Hutt brother and sister who came to claim Jabba's territory by kinship, and above all from the Pyke Syndicate's expanding spice trade. With the help of Fennec Shand, the Wookiee Black Krrsantan, the people of Freetown, and Din Djarin, Fett fought the Pykes in open war in the streets of Mos Espa. He faced and overcame his old mentor Cad Bane in the fighting. Victorious, he walked the rebuilt streets of the city to the bows of its grateful denizens.
