Grogu, later known as Din Grogu, was a Force-sensitive male of the same mysterious species as the Jedi Grand Master Yoda. Born around 41 BBY, he was raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as a Jedi Initiate, survived the Great Jedi Purge, and was hidden away for decades. Rediscovered during the era of the New Republic by a remnant of the Galactic Empire, he was rescued by the Mandalorian bounty hunter Din Djarin, who took him in as a foundling and ultimately adopted him as a son.

At the Jedi Temple#

Grogu was born around 41 BBY, during the era of the Galactic Republic, and was raised at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant as a Jedi Initiate, trained by several masters over the years. As an infant of an unusually long-lived species, he remained a child even as decades passed. His early life at the Temple was largely lost to memory, leaving only fragments that he would later struggle to recall.

The Great Jedi Purge#

When the Jedi Order fell in the Great Jedi Purge at the end of the Clone Wars, Grogu was caught up in the siege of the Temple. Jedi defended him and managed to move him to safety as clone troopers closed in. The Jedi Master Kelleran Beq evacuated him from the burning Temple aboard a speeder, evading pursuit and reaching sympathetic allies who spirited the child off Coruscant. After the Galactic Empire rose to power, Grogu went into hiding alongside the few surviving Jedi, concealing his Force powers so thoroughly that he escaped the notice of the Inquisitorius. He eventually came to be held at a hideout run by Nikto mercenaries on Arvala-7.

Rescue by the Mandalorian#

By the time of the New Republic, the child had become an object of pursuit by an Imperial remnant led by Moff Gideon, who sought him through an intermediary known as the Client. The Client hired the Mandalorian Din Djarin to retrieve the asset, and Djarin tracked him to Arvala-7. Though he delivered the child as contracted, Djarin could not abandon him, and rescued him from the Imperial facility. The two attempted to hide along the fringes of the galaxy before returning to Nevarro to confront the Imperials hunting the child. In the process Grogu became a foundling and the second member of Djarin's newly created clan, Clan Mudhorn, and Djarin took up a quest to return him to the Jedi.

The search for the Jedi#

Grogu and Djarin traveled the galaxy in search of the remaining Jedi. The former Jedi Ahsoka Tano was able to sense the child's thoughts, revealing his name and history, and directed Djarin to take him to Tython, where he might reach out through the Force. There Grogu was captured by Imperial forces, and Djarin led a mission to rescue him. Reunited, Djarin delivered the child to Luke Skywalker, who agreed to take him into his care and train him in the ways of the Force.

A choice between two paths#

Grogu renewed his training under Skywalker for a short time at the Jedi academy being built on Ossus. Sensing that the child's heart was not truly in the Jedi path, Skywalker presented him with a choice after Djarin visited bearing a gift of chainmail armor: accept the gift and return to the Mandalorian, or take up Yoda's lightsaber and continue as a Jedi. Grogu chose to return to Djarin, reuniting with him on Tatooine amid the war between Boba Fett's forces and the Pyke Syndicate. He and Djarin then traveled to help restore the Mandalorian homeworld of Mandalore, aiding the Mandalorians in defeating Moff Gideon and reclaiming their world. In the aftermath, Grogu was formally adopted by Din Djarin and named Din Grogu, becoming a Mandalorian apprentice.
