Din Djarin

the Mandalorian

Din Djarin was a Mandalorian warrior and bounty hunter known across the Outer Rim simply as the Mandalorian. Hired to retrieve a Force-sensitive child, he instead became the foundling Grogu's protector and adoptive father.

By Joe Garratt

Din Djarin, known to most simply as "the Mandalorian" or "Mando," was a human Mandalorian warrior who lived during the era of the New Republic. Orphaned during the end of the Galactic Republic and raised as a foundling by the Children of the Watch, he became a battle-hardened bounty hunter who roamed the Outer Rim Territories in his ship the Razor Crest. Equipped with beskar armor, his distinctive helmet, and an array of weapons, he was an enigmatic figure whose past was a mystery to those he crossed. His life changed when a contract led him to a Force-sensitive child he chose to protect rather than surrender.

Origins and the Children of the Watch#

Din Djarin was born before 19 BBY on the planet Aq Vetina. As a child his village came under attack by Separatist battle droids during the Clone Wars, and his parents hid him beneath a hatch before they were killed. A Mandalorian of the Death Watch movement destroyed the droid that found him and carried him to safety, and he was taken in as a foundling. Raised on Concordia, he was trained as a warrior and joined the Children of the Watch, an orthodox sect that had broken from mainstream Mandalorian society. Believing their ways were the ways of all Mandalorians, he swore never to remove his helmet before another living being. In time he became part of the Tribe, a covert operating on Nevarro.

The bounty hunter#

After the fall of the Galactic Empire, Djarin made his name as a member of the Bounty Hunters' Guild, collecting bounties across the Outer Rim far from New Republic authority in his ship, the Razor Crest. Known for his skill and his price, he became one of the Guild's most effective hunters, taking contracts from the Nevarro Guild master Greef Karga. Few who crossed his path knew his name, and most wrongly assumed he hailed from Mandalore itself.

The child#

Around 9 ABY, Djarin was hired on Nevarro by a client of an Imperial remnant to retrieve an asset on the world of Arvala-7. Guided by the Ugnaught Kuiil and joined by the bounty hunter droid IG-11, he discovered that the asset was a Force-sensitive child of the same species as the Jedi Grand Master Yoda. Though ordered to bring the child in alive, Djarin shot IG-11 to save the infant and took him into his custody. He delivered the child to the client and collected his reward, but, unable to live with the betrayal, he returned and rescued the child, fending off Guild hunters with the help of the Tribe.

A bond across the galaxy#

Djarin and the child, later known as Grogu, traveled the galaxy together, forming a close bond. He fought beside the former Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, undertook jobs on Tatooine, and returned to Nevarro to help Greef Karga drive out the Imperials in exchange for clearing the bounty on the child. The Mandalorian known as the Armorer charged Djarin with returning Grogu to his people and named his clan, Clan Mudhorn. Djarin's search led him to the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano, who revealed the child's name and history and directed him to Tython. There he met Boba Fett, who sought the return of his armor, before Moff Gideon's forces captured Grogu.

The Darksaber#

With Fett's help and that of Cara Dune, Migs Mayfeld, Fennec Shand, and the Mandalorian Bo-Katan Kryze, Djarin stormed Gideon's cruiser to rescue Grogu. In the fighting he defeated Gideon in single combat and claimed the Darksaber, unintentionally becoming a potential heir to the title of Mand'alor. As Dark Troopers cornered the team, Luke Skywalker arrived in answer to Grogu's call through the Force. Djarin bid the child farewell, promising they would meet again.

Banishment and reunion#

Returning to bounty hunting, Djarin sought out his old tribe and asked the Armorer to forge his beskar spear into chainmail for Grogu. After dueling Paz Vizsla over the Darksaber and winning, he was banished from the ways of the Children of the Watch for having removed his helmet. He commissioned a new starfighter from Peli Motto on Tatooine and answered Fennec Shand's call to aid the Fett gotra in its war against the Pyke Syndicate, fighting beside Boba Fett through the Battle of Mos Espa, where Grogu was reunited with him. He and Grogu went on to join the effort to reclaim the Mandalorian homeworld, ultimately adopting Grogu as his son.
